The party split with Carla and JJ following the coast North to Plaza del Toros along the ramblas, and me heading south on the bike to Playa Ferrando. It was late afternoon already by the time I set off on my rented bicycle. I took General Flores out of the old town and a nice lady gave me directions to a short cut through the shopping centre car park which took me to a dirt road. The dirt road ended onto a tarred road where I asked a couple of boys for directions. "Donde esta la Playa Ferrando?" "todo derecho y al fondo y a la derecha" "gracias" "Muy linda" "!!??!?" After yet another 2 hour bus ride (it seems to take 2 hours to get everywhere around here!) we arrive in Colonia and settle in to the worst "hotel" so far - with a bathroom so small you have to put your feet in the shower when you sit on the loo! Again, we don´t have much time here so arrange to hire scooters for a couple of hours so we can see what Colonia has to offer. A good choice, as we are rewarded with stunning views out to sea. Further along the coastal road we come across the remains of a disused bullring - a most imposing structure, like a miniature coliseum. English summary: Today we made a daytrip to Colonia del Sacramento, in Uruguay. Within an hour (by ferry) you're on the other end of the Rio Uruguay, in Colonia. It's a city with a nice old centre with cobble stone streets. Vandaag een dag tripje vanuit Buenos Aires naar Uruguay, Colonia. Binnen een uurtje varen komen we in Colonia aan. Een rustig stadje met een mooi oud centrum. Na ons dagelijks ritueel, jugos (vers geperst sapje) drinken, rond gelopen langs de kust. Het centrum heeft veel oude gebouwen en kinderkopjes straatjes waar je met veel moeite over kan lopen. Vanaf de top van de vuurtoren heb je een goed beeld van het stadje. Opvallend is dat er veel antieke auto's rondrijden. Voor het eerst valt op dat men in deze streek veel Mate thee drinkt. ... read more

Can't believe I've been in Argentina 3 months already, but time has flown and I need a new 90 day tourist stamp in my passport so decided to visit Uruguay for a few days.. Just a 3 hour ferry ride across Rio de le Plata from Buenos Aires (a huge brown estuary between Argentina and Uruguay) Another UNESCO World Heritage Site... not sure how places qualify but everywhere I visit seems to be one! .. and well deserved.. Colonia is a cute little place with cobbled shady streets, colonial architecture, nice beaches.. it's definitely an ideal place for a romantic getaway, shame I was there by myself ;) Wandered around the old town on day one, which you can do in a few hours.
