It’s raining and my bus doesn’t leave for another 3 hours so I figured I’d get to blogging.. Where to begin? I love Uruguay. Ever since I spent time in Uruguay in high school I’ve been dying to go back. There is just something so magical about this place. It’s very laid back and I love being on the ocean. I took the ferry from BsAs to Colonia, Uruguay early Friday morning and then bussed from Colonia to Punta del Este. In total it’s about a 6 hour trip. After getting checked in at the hotel in Punta del Este, my pals had not arrived yet, so I hit the beach to lay out in the sun. Just hearing the ocean was great. Soaking in the sun, I passed 3 hours starting & finishing the last ... read more

From Florianopolis we took a long overnight bus journey to finally leave the most expensive country on the planet (honestly, more expensive than home!) and head to Uruguay. It was on arrival to Uruguay that Jen&Moz became JustJen so from now on I can bore you all with my solo antics! So the "party beach town" of Punta del Este actually greeted me with a grey and rainy ghost town. My hostel was prebooked and there was no sign of a taxi so I set to finding my hostel. After 10 minutes I had reached it; Punta del Este is a tiny town with only a few main streets. I got chatting to some Aussies (I don´t actually think there any Australians left in Australia...they´re all here in South America) and they were telling me its ... read more

The resort town of Punta del Este is the Cancun/Cannes of Uruguay and Argentina. The rich and thin jet here for hot days on the beach and hotter nights in the discos during the summer holidays from Christmas to Carnival. Huge high rises litter the beach and mansions are tucked into more isolated cliff tops and parks away from the center of the madness. Gypsies in gaily-colored layers, roam the main street, offering, "Let me read your palm, my love." I arrived on the cusp of the chaos. All along the coast, workers were fervently painting and getting rentals and restaurants ready for the season. I generally avoid these types of places, opting for the funky backpacker Isla de Mujeres rather than Cancun on the Yucatan Peninsula, and tiny Antibes and genteel Nice over the swanky ... read more

My last weekend in Uruguay included a couple highlights which most would consider mandatory for any anyone visiting the country. Somehow I made it through the first month of my trip without doing either. The first was a trip to Punta del Este, which is an upscale beach resort town a little over an hour outside of Montevideo. People from all over the world come here to vacation especially in January which is the middle of their summer. The weather hasn’t been really warm up until the last week so it really would have been pretty empty if I had gone earlier in the trip. What made this trip really cool was that the group that I went with included 2 Uruguayans, 2 Portuguese, 2 Columbians, and a Canadian. The 2 Uruguayans, Alejandro and Anita, were ... read more

Day 4 I have googled all of the areas in which we will be travelling. One of the recommended site is Isla de Gorritti. At night it is lit up and can easily be seen from the mainland. It appears to be beautiful and covered in palm trees. We have figured out, from multiple sources, how to get to the island. It is a twenty minute boat ride from the marina. The weather was beautiful today. We rode the boat to the island which supposedly held two restaurants and some old ruins. Upon docking on the island, we jumped off the boat and head to land on an old wooden dock. We were greeted by an old cannon set among beautiful swaying palm trees and a sign introducing us to the island. We trekked our way ... read more

Day 2/3 Since the first day was really two days long, I will consider this our catch-up day. This day we wake up and are ready to go. I have read on the internet about the "Dedos" or "El Mano". AKA "Fingers" or "The Hand". After a quick breakfast at the hotel, we cab it over to the beach to check out this supposedly famous sculpture. Of coure we have forgotten the sunscreen, but we have also forgotten our towels. We strolled along the beach at Playa Brava, named for the riptides and gnarly waves. Eventually we found a seaside restaurant with a patio overlooking the beach but shaded with umbrellas. We are enjoying the beach but cannot sit in the sun so we drink some beers and have some pizza under the umbrellas. We end ... read more

Well, here I continue, skirting the Uruguayan Coast and sleeping in a new bed every night. I loved Colonia and stayed there longer than I thought I would and then a few days ago I took a very comfortable bus a couple of hours down the road to the capital city of Montevideo. It was nice there and I was traveling with a really wonderful girl, Eva, from Frankfurt and we spoke Spanish the time and explored the city together. I also traveled with two guys from Spain who I will no doubt run into again along our route. Montevideo had a lovely oceanside walking path (Rambla) but I just wasn't enchanted by the city so I left the next day for Punta del Este, a resort community that is the place to be in the ... read more
