So finally in the Spanish speaking world again! Feels nice to have an element of control over understanding people yet strangely feels like just being in Spain (except with a much harder variety of spanish to capture). Our bus journey in total was around 20 hours, from Florianopolis to Porto alegre in Brazil then down the coast to the Eastern tip of Uruguay. Surprisingly the bus journey was fine, the Uruguay bus was amazing, we didnt know you got fed on it, or definately wouldnt have spent our last 50 reals on a Frango meal (chicken, but we have been caling it Frango as its much catchier). We ended up getting served yet another Frango! Uruguay has signalled the start of a "detox" for me, looking back over the last weeek or so in Brazil we ... read more

No Uruguay visit is complete without having seen Punta del Este – well at least, so I have been told by many people… so last weekend I finally headed this direction full of expectations. Punta del Este is known for it's beaches, yachts, beautiful people and a vibrant night scene. It is expensive, usually about 50% more expensive than other areas of Uruguay, if not more. It's been called the Monaco of South America. Tourist season varies from totally deserted in the winter to very very crowded in the summer, unusual for a city this size. So since we are in the middle of autumn over here - I did not find this exciting resort, but instead I found a laid back and mundane beach side town. I was very lucky with the weather including a ... read more

An "Australian Surf Instructor" in Uruguay. Something I never thought I would do/be/become... This is going to be a good conversation starter when I start going for job interviews in Australia again. So the summer in Punta del Este has come to an end and therefore so has my work as a surf instructor. I decided to keep a small diary of my experience over the time, giving you the following as a little summary and extract of some of the thoughts, feelings & struggles I faced whilst teaching surf over the past 6 weeks. Never-the-less, it was a fun experience and will be interesting to elaborate on in an interview some day! WEEK #1 Challenges faced: the constant feeling of jet-lag whilst trying to bring my body clock back into sync with daylight hours. Emotionally ... read more

Sometimes you've got to experience everything going wrong to get to where you want to be. Today, that has to be my motto. Ok so my Spanish is a little poor, but I do think I speak and understand enough to get to where I need to be - except for the fact that no one knows where the hell I'm going and want to send me in the opposite direction! *this could be a good motivational life quote if anyone wants to turn it into one of those 'Pintrest' thingies. So Uruguay. After 1 month here I think I realise what I'm here for. This feels like the place where I put all my lessons learnt to the test - and so far, ... read more

Back in Asia we heard that South America is a great place for CouchSurfers. We did not participate much in CS in Asia but decided to give it a go in here. We already stayed with Leandro in Buenos and now came the time to try some of the Uruguayan hospitality. We took a bus from Montevideo to Maldonado (100UR$/10$ each) near Punta Del Este to meet our hosts – Lau and Max. We could not believe how high the standard of Uruguayan buses was. Not only they have brand new flotas but also all of them have Wi-Fi on board. Shame on you, bus companies in Europe!!! We got there around 8 pm and were a little bit skeptical about walking 8 blocks to the main plaza with all of our stuff. As we learnt ... read more

This next segment of the cruise was a busy one. We went to 10 ports in 11 days. It is hard to study up on each one when the ports are back to back. But we would do our best. The ship is full as about 490 new passengers boarded in Buenos Aires. It takes a while for everyone to get settled in. We see newbies at the stern of the ship when they are trying to get to the Observation Lounge at the bow and vice versa or wandering up and down the hallways looking for their stateroom. It’s the joy of discovery. After another nice day in Montevideo we cruised up to the resort town of Punta Del Este. This is the vacation escape place for wealthy Argentinians and Uruguayans. It was the first ... read more

Hello from Punta del Este in Uruguay! Have just finished a day of beaches and walking around this resort town, although we were told we would see ferraris on the streets here the best we have seen is a porsch, and even that was a 4WD. This seems to be the richest place in Uruguay and very different from Montevideo. For lunch we went to the port here and ordered fresh seafood in the market and had it cooked up on the spot. Unfortunately did not do currency conversions well and failed to realise it was about $100 US for our lunch, not bad overall, but up there for south american prices. Also saw a sea lion fend off two street dogs and an intruiging battle - we were on the sea lions side. before montevideo ... read more

it's been a few days, but we are now well into our trip to south america. it was quite the long haul, starting in pittsburgh, and road tripping it down to d.c. to catch our flight. from here, we hit el salvador, peru, and finally arrived here in uruguay on sunday. uruguay was the place in our trip where we really had no plans, and no expectations. we hoped for nice weather and a little warmth, but really nothing else. thankfully for us, our expectations have been blown away! we arrived in montevideo at the carrasco airport, grabbed our bags after grabbing loads of duty free bebidas, and searched out europcar. keeping in mind we arrived around 5:30 in the morning, we had no idea how long we'd have to wait for them to open. luckily, ... read more
