Hi, beach life is seriously draining I can tell you! Sleeping lots and finding it far too difficult to motivate myself to keep the blog up.... Anyway quickly, had great time in Ecuador, then took overnight bus back to Lima - this turned into the worse journey yet in South America.... 30 hours on a warm bus with dodgy air conditioning, three sreaming infants, a family of about 20 from hell swapping seats the entire time and screaming at each other down the bus, crap seats, terrible food..... arghhhhh! Anyway survived somehow although at the time we thought we would afraid to get on a bus ever again! Stayed in a different hostel in Lima than last time which was a mistake as new one was a bit weird. Only for one night so no worries. ... read more

I guess some of you may have been wondering where i've been the last few weeks and why my blogs suddenly stopped, well it was nothing to do with getting kidnapped, turns out Justin Timberlake felt threatened when he saw me and so bought my silence in a vain attempt to stop me from reaching my public.....good luck trying to silence me!! Getting serious for just a moment, as a lot of you are probably aware, I have actually been home for the last three weeks due to the death of my father. It's been a pretty tough time and I did consider whether I should return to South America and if I should carry on writing these or not. After thinking about it, sitting around moping in the UK was definitely not what my Dad ... read more

Well, I´m really only writing this because I haven´t done one for ages. It seems I´ve gotten pretty bad at this. Ah well. So, I finished my Spanish classes. I think I´m speaking reasonably well again now, so it acheived its purpose. I´m not sure I learnt much new, but I´m not sure I expected to. The school and classes were OK, especially for the absurdly low price, but not nearly as sociable as the school I went to last time. Not that it needs to be, I still managed to have myself an excellent bloody time. Anyway, now I'm in Uruguay. I spent a day in Montevideo, which I guess is like BA's ugly little sister. Not a lot to say about it really. Now I'm in Punta del Este. It's a big resort with ... read more

In Punta del Este. An afternoon thunderstorm has dropped rain and the ubiquitous humidity onto this cluster of high rise hotels, condos and bling bling lining the sandy shores of Uruguay’s southeastern most point. I’m in an open air bar drinking piss beer and watching drips fall off of gaudy blue beach umbrellas onto vacant tables as people scuttle by on foot, bike, motorcycle. It will be hot and humid once again if the sun comes out, but for now this is heaven. The wind has shifted from the south in the last hour, which means we’ll be sailing tomorrow, thank god. We are all itchy to lift the sails. Since leaving Buenos Aires we’ve had a wind on our nose almost the entire way, making the diesel drone on and on when the slicing ... read more

An extra day in Uruguay due to travel connections gave us time to get to the legendary Punta Del Este, playgound of rich porteños. Straight off the bus we dropped off bags at the first hostel we saw and were on the beach in half an hour... Obviously the wrong beach! It was beautiful though, and it was only in the afternoon that we stumbled across a busier beach. Punta is a peninsula with beaches all around - too many to choose from. On any of them a constant stream of thong clad ladies (of all sizes and ages...)stroll on past. An interesting sight, but apparently all the pretty girls were further down the coast. A few drinks in the evening with Alejandro (an Argentine contact of Jody's) gave him the opportunity to give us all ... read more

Well unfortunately my camera broke.... I went to see Armin Van Buuren play and there was SO MANY PEOPLE....danced all night and Ive never sweat so badly...my clothes were drenched (my camera was in my pocket).....and now it broke from sweat.... I thought perhaps if I spray deoderant on it, it might revive....but to no avail. So unfortunately there will be no pictures until I sort that situation out.... So on the 30th I was at Armin....31st I went to Paul Van Dyk (with my cousin from israel). Two great nights... I then went to Punta Del Este....that city is heaven and hell in one!! Such a beautiful location...as nice or nicer than any beaches we have in australia, but unfortunately the people are horrible. All the south americans who have money head down there this ... read more

**please note we are having to post the blogs we wrote earlier now that we have a solid internet connection!** December 23, 2007 Random thoughts so far… -The trend so far in our experience (El Calafate, Argentina and Punta del Este, Uruguay) is that everyone eats dinner very late (we went to dinner at 9pm and no one was at the restaurant. By 10pm families with kids arrived as well as other tourists, etc. Dave and I have felt like “the early bird special” a couple of times, and we’re late eaters by comparison to most in ATL!! -The people in Uruguay so far have been super nice. Our luggage did not make it with our flight (such a bummer after another full day of airplanes and airports!). We got a reco for dinner, and upon ... read more

We took a quick jaunt to Uruguay to see what some call the ¨Miami of South America¨. The south beaches that we saw are cool and breezy, the mall is the place to be, and the people are addicted to matte. There was actually nothing gay about it if you don´t count the guy crooning in fish-nets and heels on the streets of Montevideo, so we finally stopped the silliness and pronounced the country´s name correctly. We traveled in style on our usual double-decker bus so we had a great view of the houses from around the world on the way. The neighborhoods outside Punta del Este include Mexican (adobe with red trim), Alpine (my sister, Lauren´s favorite A-frame), Dutch (complete with windmill) and even English (thatched roof cottages). We knew this was a bit glitzier ... read more
