After a hearty lunch of Shepards Pie in the Irish bar (not quite local food , but heh) , we left Cuzco and headed to Puno on the shore of Lake Titicaca. From here we hooked up with SAS Travel and their tour of the lake. First was the Uros Islands, floating islands made of reeds. When they got a bit soggy, another 5 " of reeds were laid on top. Even the locals boats were made of reeds. Very primitive, although they did have solar panels for their electricity, a gift from the Peruvian government! From here our boat continued to Amantani Island. We were introduced to Olga who was to be our host for the night. Her house was made of bricks held together with mud and straw, although our accommodation seemed better than ... read more

Hi everybody, we’re in Puno! Managed to get out of Puerto Maldonado a day early on a half empty flight. I guess our airline is not one of the better know ones, cheapest though. The flight was good, only a little turbulence as we got to Cuzco. Mike was having a tough time. We went straight to the bus station to buy tickets for the night bus to Puno, and were pleasantly surprised to find a whole mob of bus company touts all trying to sell us cheap last minute tickets going there! So within ten minutes of getting to the bus station, we had half price tickets ($4 each), and got to leave in the afternoon rather than the night. Puno happens to be having a big festival right now. It’s the anniversary of the ... read more

Puno - Lacul Titicaca 21-25.10.2005 Version française plus loin Salut, Suntem in ultima seara in Puno, pe malul lacului Titicaca, si am decis sa punem cateva poze si sa scriem cateva randuri inainte de a pleca spre Cusco.

We arrived in Puno, which is a bit grim, late at night and just after a huge amount of rainfall - litter and huge puddles everywhere. We then checked into a hostal which was as I imagine a prison cell to be, so our first impressions were less than good! The next day the weather was beautiful, and Pun is right on the shores of the lake, so it picked up fairly rapidly. We did a two day boat trip to the islands on the lake, starting with the floating Uros islands. They are incredibly beautiful - the colours seem very vivid on the lake, I don´t know if that is as a result of the thin atmosphere or just the huge body of water. Rhuemastism is unsurprisingly a bit of a problem there, living on ... read more

After our unexpected long stay in Cusco we were eventually leaving! Although Cusco is a beautiful place with lots to see around the area, the constant hassle from touts and children selling postcards and finger puppets gets too much! As a treat with some of our wedding present we decided to book first class on the train journey from Cusco to Puno which is on the shores of Lake Titikaka in Southern Peru. We awoke with pleanty of time to get checked out of our hostel and down to the train station, but after having to wait for 15 minutes to get our change as the hostel had not got any we were starting to stress! We stood outside the hostel loaded up ready with our backpacks waiting for the girl to come back with our ... read more

Hi Everyone. Someone just told us it was Saturday...so I suppose most of you will read this on Monday...thanks for all the messages...it´s great to hear that we´ll be making you jealous again at the start of the working week :o) We can´t believe it´s almost three weeks gone. Today is our last day in Peru and we are off to Bolivia tomorrow (fingers x´d on the bus journey, 8 hours). So since we last spoke (!!), we´ve travelled across Peru to Puno. We decided to go ´First Class Travel´which was a tour company offering air con coaches (with Loo) and it was great...cos in eight hours we stopped off at loads of churches, Inca ruins and the odd tourist market. In particular we stopped at Andahuaylillas and visited the church of San Pedro. Steve was ... read more

From Copacabana I caught the bus over the border to Puno. No dramas in immigration but our bus decided to break down on the other side of the border and we had to join another bus. Unfortunately, they miscalculated the numbers and, me being the last person, I was left without a seat. Inventive souls those Peruvians, solved this problem by puttiing a wooden kids seat in the isle, right at the front. This gained a lot of laughter and, once again, I became the subject of many photo's. The following morning I went to visit the floating reed islands of Puno. The 'Uros' people of Lake Titicaca live on these islands formed from compacted beds of totora reeds that are constantly topped up. It's a rather odd experience walking on the islands because the reeds ... read more

So what an amazing experience. Its true what they say about Lake Titicaca (or Titikaka if you are a local) truely amazing scenery and the blue sky reflects across the water with such a deep blue colour you could be in Greece. The tuk tuk ride was too much for Alex as 10 minutes into the 4 hour boat ride she was being sick. Unfortunately she missed out on the 2 hour up hill walk on the Island of Taquille (which was meant to be a 40min flat walk!?) and the lunch cooked for us by the local Mayor!? The men here have an interesting tradition of knitting their own hats and competition is rife to see who has the most stylish and elaborate. We were given a sheet of helpful Quechua words that we had ... read more

After a great time in Chile except for one incident with a vanishing bag, we headed to Peru. We had booked a bus ticket from Tacna, which is just inside the Peruvian border to Puno, a small port on the edge of lake Titicaca. First we had to get to Tacna via a 'colectivo', which is a big old american car which would have looked at home being driven by Huggy Bear on the set of Starsky & Hutch. The Colectivo waits until it has enough people and then sets off accross the border. We were lucky to avoid the waiting around as the company we had booked our bus through (Zesal) had organised for the colectivo to pick us up from our hostel. Crossing the border was the easiest crossing we have had to date. ... read more

September 9, 2005 We take a 9 hour bus to Puno from Cusco which wasn´t as painful as it sounds as we stopped 5 times to see ruins, have lunch and of course, shop. Another cool bus crowd so we chatted the time away. One of the girls traveling with us today went to school with Dan´s cousin in Chicago. Small world. Her and her mother are on their last few days of vacation so they give us their stash of snacks. I can´t tell you how good the single packets of crystal light taste after having nothing but coke light and agua. The PB&J is a huge hit. The closest you can get to peanut butter here is nutella. It is freezing when we arrive in Puno. We fight off a dozen cabbies trying to ... read more
