Had a good trip from Cusco over to Puno which is on Lake Titicaca. I took the tourist bus that stops at various sites including more Inca and pre-Inca ruins. On the Tuesday I headed out on the Lake to visit the slightly touristy Uros Islands. They are amazing and are doing well to maintain their way of life on the islands. They are made of reeds that are continually harvested and placed on top to maintain the depth whilst the ones at the bottom rot away. They rise and fall with the waves from the passing boats and the surface is very spongy. To keep up with modern times they use solar power to provide power for lighting and they also farm fish via a hole in the middle of the island and a fine ... read more

Well it finally happened - we got stuff nicked by some dastardly Peruvians. Nothing much of value was taken, and we still have all our photographs stored (don't worry,we've made sure we can still take pictures etc by way of a cheap digi camera) so it doesn't really matter that much, but it's annoying that it happened. It was about 6.45am, and we were trying to catch a bus that was trying very hard to avoid us. We had booked it with a lady who had said it would pick us up from our hotel, which it didn't. We then had to go and find a non-specific location on a road, which we didn't manage to. We sat down to get our bearings, and at some point someone made off with one of our day-bags. We ... read more

well its been one adventure after another recently. Early to rise and we were on our way to the floating islands on Lake titicaca, most impresssive! The Islands actually float!! There are reeds packed together to form a base, and the roots of the reeds float hence keeping the island from sinking, the only thing keeping it in one place are stakes going directly through the island. The views from the island were lovely but unfortuantly the islands are so over comercialised it kind of spoils it, although we did get to buy some lovely lovely tourist goods!! After a while on one floating island the natural progression was to go to the next floating island...the one with a phone box on it! Where we photographed a lady making bread who then demanded some money! then ... read more

Well La Paz was great and everything, a little high but it was okay, great shopping and cheap as chips! But Itchy feet caught up with us so we packed up our things and got on a bus and ended up in Puno, Peru!! But our last few days in La Paz were very adventurous indeed.... Tiwanaku We finally gave in and decided to join a tour group, you know those annoying groups of people in North Face coats, bags, hats, gloves, underpants, who wear safari hats in the middle of the city, well we were one of those! But it was worth it, we had an English speaking guide who pointed things out to us which we would never have noticed otherwise, such as the fact the statues had their noses cut off because the ... read more

Took a quick 3 or 4 hour bus ride around the lake to Puno. the border crossing was a breeze and the transition to peru was smooth a butter. there wer suptle differences - the prices were slightly higher, people dressed a little less traditionally and there seemed to be more tourists. also the vendors seemed a little more aggressive, maybe because the were more tourists. as i right this i am in lima and the differences are huge. there are very few people dressed traditionally or like campacinos (country people). even in la paz bolivia the were a lot of campacionos. the prices are a lot higher here in lima, they are even higher than argentina. so i am back in a dorm for the first time in over three months!!!!! i am paying $9 ... read more

After a wonderful nights rest at Wary Naywa Hotel in Puno, we woke up at 5:00 AM ... again, to catch a collectivo over to Juliaca (Puno suburb) for the airport. The drive was ok, except for the fact the person beside me felt the need to open her window... we froze for the entire 45 minute trip. When we arrived at the airport we heard rumors of a bombing in London from some people who had caught the morning news before they left their hotel room. The TV in the airport seemed to running a re-run of yesterday evening news. The rumors were beginning to spread, UK residence began frantically making calls. Everyone at the gate seating area was eagerly waiting for a news flash update. Before that ever occurred an airport security personnel ... read more

We woke up at a reasonable 7:00 AM to fantastic pancake breakfast. We gather our belongings and were whisked away to the docks. Was said our yuspagara sunkis (thanks) and ripushaykus(goodbyes), hopped on the boat and went full steam ahead (5 knots) towards Taquile Island. Taquile Island sounds way more fun than it really is. The location of the Island places it about an hour closer to Puno than Amantani, and has thus exposed it to the influx of tourists ... and their money for much longer than Amantani. This has created a rather cold, and "leave our money and get out" type of attitude amongst the people. Additionally, we found out that the people of Taquile are a Xenophobic...ok too strong..... Introverted peoples. They refuse to mingle or marry outside of the Island. This ... read more

Yesterday evening I discovered that our hotel in Puno (Wary Naywa) had a pool and steam room. Being so tired, I put an alarm on my watch to prevent my self from falling asleep in the steam room, last thing I wanted was to turn into a lobster. The next morning we woke up bright and early to catch a collectivo down to the docks were we began our two day trip to the Islands of Amantani and Taquile. On the way we stopped off to visit the Uros floating Islands people. These folks some how figured it was better to build floating Islands from water reads than to live on real ground. About 1000 inhabitants occupy 32 or so of these floating Islands. The eat fish, reeds ... and that's about it. Alessandra took ... read more

We got up at 5:00 AM, again, to catch an early cab to the airport. The ride was double than normal... the cabbie then asked us to turn our heads away from other cabs... ok, I get it.... so this guy was a strike scab.. no problem. We kept our heads low all the way to the airport. From there on everything went smoothly, flight departed on time and arrived in Juliaca without incident, which was a welcome change from the last few days. We jumped on a collectivo (free enterprise communal van of sorts) for 10 soles for the 50 minute drive into Puno. This city seems crammed compared to Arequipa. At some point the city planners decided 1 foot of side walk between building and road is more than enough for its 160,000 ... read more
