Puno and Lake Titicaca By guest authors Aashild Espedalen and Astrid Diana Oramas. In Arequipa Astrid and I left Robin and Helene behind to study Spanish and travelled on to Puno by Lake Titicaca. The busride took around 6 hours and we arrived late in the afternoon. As Lake Titicaca lies at 3820 meters above sea level we soon noticed shortness of breath as we climbed the stairs in the hostel. We went to bed early to get ready for a big day ahead on the lake. Lake Titicaca is the highest lake with passenger boat services in the world and is also South America’s largest lake and the largest lake in the world above 2000 m. Puno is a small port situated at the shore of Lake Titicaca. It is an excellent departure point for ... read more

Lake Titicaca is jointly owned by Peru and Bolivia and can be visited from either side. We had originally planned to visit from the Bolivian side and visit Isla del Sol and Isla de la Luna but having been told that the latter was temporarily closed to visitors, we decided to visit the floating Islands of Uros, Isla Taquile and Amantani instead (from Puno). We were slightly hesitant as this trip is supposed to be very touristy and contrived but I´m glad we decided to see for ourselves. The Lake is the highest navigable lake in the world and natives believe it is the product of tears from a God (I forget which one now) Dotted around the lake are traditional villages where Spanish is the second language and where ancient myths and beliefs still hold ... read more

Days 31, 32 and 33 We were picked up early in La Paz and headed for the Peruvian border. The trip took about 10 hours including a boat ride over a lake that was in our path! We stopped on the shore of lake Titicaca at a place called Copacabana for lunch. We arrived in Puno and had a mooch arround and bought some wooly hats as it was getting cold in the evenings. One of the shops had a baby lama in it. At first we thought it was a toy, but as it got up and pee´d in a pot we realised not only was it real but house trained too!! We were picked up at 7:30 by "limo´s" which turned out to be bicycle powered taxi´s. They took us to a port on ... read more

I´ll first start with the most exciting part of the day, the boat trip back from Taquile Island. The full day consisted of a boat trip to the Reed Islands then onto the island of Taquile for lunch. The journey to Taquile was very pleasant, sitting on the top deck enjoying the sun. The return trip started in the same way but this didn´t last. About an hour into the 3 hour journey I was woken by the boat gently rocking, thought nothing of it and went back to sleep. Over the next half an hour it got alot worse, pritty soon everyone was back down from the top deck sitting in silence and looking very worried at each other. It then got worse still, everyone started putting on life vests with a few people being ... read more

Hello everyone, This is likely to be very short and sweet again. In an internet cafe in Copacabana in Bolivia (today 14 December) which is ridiculously expensive!! Not going to check my e-mails, but will quickly update my diary. Arrived in Puno at 5am on 13 December after 7 hours on the overnight bus which was freezing cold!! Biggest compensation was being able to see sunrise over Lake Titicaca at Puno. Didn´t manage to take any photos as I was concentrating on getting my big ruckie out of the bus and staying as warm as possible!! Headed straight for our hotel where Vicki and I crashed for a few hours. At 9am we took a boat trip to the floating islands of Uros. They are made out of the reeds that grow in Lake Titicaca. They ... read more

South America » Peru » Puno November 19th 2005

The first time I came to Puno I decieded that I did not want to see Los Uros. Aren´t they just a bunch of floating tourist shops, no? But this time however, I had a morning to kill before I caught a collectivo to the boader. So I thought I would drift out there and think of it as a trip to a museo, complete with actors. The fist Isla we visited was the most interesting as the "local" gave us the root of the weed they use to make the island from to eat. It didn´t really have any flavour. The locals themselves no longer eat the stuff either, they get all their food from Puno. Bascially the locals work on some sort of rotation- a few weeks on, a few weeks off, so the ... read more

Sun. I2th. Nov. PUNO. Hotel & town not up to our usual standard, but we are only here to do the islands on Lake Titicaca. We were bused down to the harbour where we boarded a launch with 20 other people. We went onto the top deck and had great views of the reeds. 3/4 hour later the launch berthed alongside the floating island, and as we jumped off you could feel the movement of the reeds on the water. Their teepees are made of reeds and the locals cook and carry on a normal life on this floating island. Even the canoe was constructed with reeds, and fools that we are, we trusted it to take us to the other Uros island. -- Brilliant! Back on the normal boat and a pleasant cruise to Tequili ... read more
