We had booked a tour to see the famous floating islands on Lake Titicaca, and after being picked up we head down to the port. As we head out to the islands the view is amaing the blues and greens of lake seem extra vivid in the moring sun although being at this height and the time of day the wind is biting but doesnt deter us sitting on top of the boat taking in these unique views. The first island we visit is tiny, these people moved onto the reed beds to flea from the Spanish and have lived there since, although numbers have fallen to only1,000 on all the islands is still group of people who are living in a historic way. The islands are made be securing the reed roots together then putting ... read more

Lake Titicaca is 3800 m above sea level and is so massive that looking out over it you think you are looking at an ocean. We stayed in Puno on the shores of the Lake, and from there visited the floating Uros reed islands where islanders still live as their ancestors did. We also did a homestay on Amantani Island and stayed with a lovely family complete with guinea pigs running amok in the kitchen (I didnt actually get to eat one there, but have since tried one, tastes like chicken!) The islanders played football against our guys and had the added advantage of being totally used to running around at this high altitude. Even so, I think the score was 2-2. After the football we all got dressed up in traditional Amantani costume, the boys ... read more

English La Paz Our visit in Brasil was really a relaxing break before going back to the less confortable country of Bolivia. We enjoyed a lot the beaches, the atmosphere and the people in Brasil, but we had to go on with our trip. Actually, we were really looking forward to the tough life on the Andes at 4000 meters of altitude... we missed Bolivia. From Salvador Bahia we decided to catch the plane to Sao Paolo instead of going through a bus trip of 33 hours... actually the plane ticket turned out to be even cheaper, so why not? The plane, in reality, was so cheap for some reason: departure from Salvador at 3.00 a.m. and arrival at Sao Paolo at 6.00 a.m. In Sao Paolo of course we stopped again at Toninelli's place, we ... read more

So, left Bolivia, and stopped by Puno for the islands for the Uros people briefly on Sunday. It rained, so we didn´t spend too much time on the islands, but it was just as well. After about 5 minutes, the excitement of standing on a floating island made of reeds wore off. The people here actually LIVE on these things! There are chickens and ducks being raisded on these¨islands¨. Left Puno on Sunday night, and caught a bus to Cuzco. The 8 hour ride was freezing cold, and I got bitten by some kind of bug multiple times on my ass. Yah, that was pleasant. So pissed off about the bugs that Brian and I decided to catch the first plane on Monday morning to Lima. Buying the tickets was quite an adventure in and of ... read more

ALL ABOARD! Well the train ride from Cusco to Puno was 11 hrs of beautiful scenery. We had good food on the ride and I managed to lose at least 5 crazy eight countdowns to Jeff. Upon arrival into Puno we were met by a woman from our hostel...we stayed at Hostel Uros which was cheap and clean and had a tourist agency right across the street. So we immediately booked our tour to the islands. You can go to the Uros islands yourself but if you would like to stay the night you have to book through an agency to ensure a spot with a local family. UROS ISLANDS These islands were so cool. The Uros people built them with only reeds, they are floating islands a few meters deep. When we set foot you ... read more

We entered Peru 15 mins from Copacabana and changed our Bolivianos for Soles, so we could start spending! We arrived in Puno, we are here because we want to go and visit the floating islands (Uros) and Taquile as we have heard they are beautiful. We went out early to the floating islands, islands made of reeds, the houses the ground and everything. The staple diet of the people of the islands is also reeds. It was very cute, little communities on each island. We took a reed boat from one island to the other. A traditional way of transport... and really comfy. From the islands we headed on another boat to Taquile Island. Which is the largest island on the Peruvian side of the lake. It was beautiful. We got off and walked up to ... read more
