Lots of catching up to do! Martina and I had a great time on our Trek to Machupichu. It started off inauspiciously- our ride from the hostel was late picking us up by almost half an hour. When it finally did show it was a big tourist bus with all the amenities and had only one other passenger. Then tyhat bus dropped us off at the town square and we were shuffled onto a small, makeshift van/bus and at 5:00 in the morning it was absolutely freezing. Martina and I pulled out our sleeping bags and managed a semblance of warmth during the three hour drive to Mollepata. When we arrived we found that our guide, Ivan, was not the Ivan we´d been introduced to the previous night nor were we the only one to have ... read more

Lake Titicaca stands at 3810 meters above sea level and is the highest navigable lake in the entire world. Being 165km in length, 72km wide and its deepest point at 284m, this monstrous lake is a wonder to behold. Acting as a giant thermal regulator, the solar energy attained during the cloudless days is released during the evening and makes living in this inhospitable plateau possible. Straddling the Altiplano, a flat expanse of land between the Royal Mountains in Bolivia and the Peruvian Andes, the lake covers an astonishing 8560km squared and contains 896,000,000 cubic litres of water. The now fresh water lake was formed when the techtonic plate which runs from Alaska to Antartica and is responsible for the Andes and the Rockies first clashed into the landmass and trapped this huge expanse of water ... read more

From Copacabana crossed the border into Peru and stayed a couple of nights in Puno. Puno is a bustling town, with not much to see from a tourist point of view until you catch a boat to the world famous Islas Flotantes (Floating islands) - home to the Uros people.... read more

South America » Peru » Puno June 24th 2006

We left Bolivia and crossed into Peru, to be more specific Puno. To be honest there was not much there really except for one attraction, the Floating Islands. They are located about a 25 min boat ride from Puno and you guessed it, just float in the middle of Lake Titicaca. We set off for a hectic day of the floating islands in the morning followed by a bus journey to Cusco with only 30 mins in between to spare... When we got to the Islands they explained about how they were made up, none of which I can actually really remember, but it was roughly all made with different layers of reeds. We were then given some of the reeds to eat, it didn't really taste of much but since I hadn't had time for ... read more

We had no idea what kind of trip we were facing up, when we got on the boot that morning.( we had organised this trip the night before without shopping around, ai, can be really wrong, but luck was with us...) A little van picked us up at the hotel and brought us to the harbour of Puno. From where a tourist boot was waiting for us to drive us first to the floating islands of Ouros, and then to the island of Amantani. It was a trip of three hours with the sun high in the sky and a beautiful view over the lake and the mountains. pure relaxing... First we visited the floating island, and the next stop was on the island of Mantan´where We stayed one night with a very lovely family ( ... read more

We have heard that Puno does not have a lot going for it other than as a stop off and entry point for Lake Titicaca. We arrive in the late afternoon after an eight-hour bus journey that took us across the border from Bolivia to Peru. After a brief rest in our rooms, we meet up again to visit the huge and quite impressive condor statue that looks out over the city from the top of the hill. The next day we set off very early with our local guide, Henry, for a two-day trip on the lake and it’s islands. It’s father´s day today, and there are no phones on the islands we are to visit, but fortunately we locate both a phone and a phone card on the quay and make the calls to ... read more

We arrive in Puno, on the Peruvian side of Lake Titicaca, late afternoon, and go to a place offered by some man on the bus. Not a bad place but had to pester for hot water for the shower while I was in it! Decided for a night on the town as I would be leaving Darren and Andrew the next day, another leaving do... We find places that give free drinks and 2 for 1 so have a crazy night, dancing to hung up most of the night. Get home about 3ish after dragging Darren out of some strangers car! Then awoken at 8am as Shaun and I had arranged another boat trip!! We try and eat breakfast and say goodbye to Darren and Andrew, clearly we are still drunk as Shaun usually is silent ... read more

Thank you to all of you for writing to us via the travel blog , it is really good to know you are enjoying our travel stories. Please keep them coming! I will have to split this next story into two parts. First part, is the trip to the floating islands. Quite an amazing idea, these locals who where trying to escape from Spanish persecution decided to tie a bunch of these reeds together on the edge of Lake Titicaca to create floating islands then to build houses, boats and other useful things out of the stuff. Nowadays they make money by selling items made out of the same reeds to tourists. It was really cool, but you know that they just put on a show as soon as the tourist boat arrives. Part 2 So............ ... read more
