Yesterday we caught an early bus to Puno. A small town at the lake Titicaca (on the Peruvian site). After checking into our hotel we have decided to go for a bit of a walk around the town and some dinner... Since we arrived in Cusco we were saying that we shoulfd try an Andean traditional dish, - cuy (Gunea pig). So, last night it wasa time to brave ourselves and order it... Asta and I agree on one thing,- we still don't know if we've liked it or not. She isn't up to trying it again, but I might because in each reagion cuy is being prepared in a different way... One of the main attractions around here are the floating Uros islands ... that was our destination today. Please see pics. ...... read more

We arrived at the floating islands of Uros, and what a beautiful site it was. The photo’s do not do it justice. We were greeted by the family from the island we had chosen to visit, then we sat down as you would have sat in school to be lectured about the islands, how the people came to be here, how the islands were constructed and how the communities worked, that sort of stuff, very interesting. We were shown foods that were eaten on the islands, (fish and reeds), some of the reeds we tried, not bad. We were then led off to look around the houses that people lived in on the island we were on, my host was called Cecilia, we were then offered some of the wares made by these people. After we ... read more

After our experiences tying to get to Puno we were really happy to be able to get to see Lake Titikaka. Eros the floating islands First stop was the Eros floating islands which are man made islands made out of reeds that grow on the lake. There's 45 islands in total with approximately 2000 inhabitants. It's pretty amazing! They have to lay all the reeds and remake the houses every 3 months so it's a lot of work. We stopped off and met some of the locals on one of the islands. These women were jovial and boistrous and having a laugh. They demonstrated how they barter and exchange goods with other communities and within their own community. The husbands are all out fishing and working and they produce goods to be sold (in this case ... read more

Puno - the great lake cityWe travelled in style from Cusco to Puno on a luxury coach, complete with corny tour guide and complimentary fat american tourists. Stopping at ancient Inca ruins along the way, jean managed to keep her blearly eyes open for 40% of the 9 hour journey. Puno looks like a shanty town....most of the buildings haven't been completed due to the exhorbitant tax the govt slaps onto the finished product. the general puno region is also reknowned in peru for being the place that rips off every brand name you can think of (ie Beebok, Abibas, Johnny Rider whisky)....what a great reputation! aside from being 3850m above sea level, the other phenomenal attraction of this town is lake titicaca - and what an incredible body of water it is.Town highlights: The beautiful ... read more

Hello friends and family. After leaving Cuzco we had been advised to take a certain tour bus to Puno (city next to Lake Titicaca). It left early in the morning, included 5 stops along the way, including a good buffet lunch. We didn't get a chance to pick our seat, and ended up at the back of the bus. It was a bus full of tourists, air-conditioned and very comfortable. We had drinks served along the route, a bathroom was available and a great tour guide name Hugo. He would speak in Spanish and English, as we did have some tourists from other latin countries on the bus. We were very happy about the trip. First we stopped at a very unique church (yeah another church), but it was extremely old with a lot of frescos ... read more

Day 76: Saturday 13th September - Travelling across the Altiplano to Puno After over a week in Cusco and the surrounding area its time to move on. Catch a bus to Puno at 8am, a 7 hour journey awaits..... The journey is across the stunning Altiplano, climbing from 3300m to Puno which lies at 3800m. Puno is the gateway to Lake Titicaca, its main and some would say only attraction. In between admiring the scenery try to fix my broken combination lock. I've a thousand combinations to try and on about the 900th I manage to sort it. After 4 hours of tedium I'm so tempted to let out a celebratory shout but manage to keep my emotions in check! At least it saves me buying another. Arrive in Puno in the middle of the afternoon. ... read more

Friday 22 Another fairly early start…we left 8am to go to Puno which is on the shores of Lake Titicaca. The landscape changes with quite fertile land along the way with lot of people farming llama and alpaca. Saw wild vicuna which are like small llamas. We stopped at Sillustani which is an old Incan funeral site. This involved a 15min hike uphill, it really tested how we were faring with the high altitude. Breathing was quite laboured and most of us seem to have pressure in the head but as long as you went along slowly you seem to be OK. Arrived in Puno, a town of about 250000 people. Puno is probably at the highest altitude we will go. Most of us seemed to be suffering varying affects from the altitude so we had ... read more

So I went on a 2 day trip onto the islands of Lake Titicaca. It was a bit of a weird trip, starting with the realisation that it was cheaper for me to go on this organised tour onto the islands, including meals, than it would have been to just stay put in Puno. First stop was the Uros floating islands, made from reeds. People do genuinely live in this way and have done so for hundreds or thousands of years but as I suspected the ones we went to were the tourist ones. I doubt the genuine ones have cafes! Interesting still but I succumbed to guilt purchases from the floating market which I have so far managed to avoid. Simon, we are now the proud owners of some Peruvian embroidered artwork. Please start thinking ... read more

Our trip from Puno to Lake Titicaca with the islands of Uros and Amantani. Lake Titicaca - the highest navigable lake in the world. You will notice from the photographs Uros Islands were floating reed islands and Amantani Island was where we had our home stay. Uros Islands Here people live on floating islands handmade from totora, a type of reed. Everything is made from totora; houses, seats, shelters and even boats. The lower root part of the totora is edible and is used in their cooking. Layers of totora are placed on the floor, which is quite spongy to walk on. Once a month a new layer is put down to replace the lower decaying layers. Every 10 years a new island is made, to replace the one being lived on. The totora roots are ... read more
