My Peru adventure has drawn to a close. Back in the U.S. since May 15, I now have time to write and post just some of the many photos I took on the last leg of our trip. By the way, in addition to reading this present entry, please also click above on "previous entry", which I published "quietly" yesterday. It is all about our second and third days in the Cuzco area. Following our stay in Cuzco, we left by coach for the 8-hour drive to Puno, the largest city on the shores of Lake Titicaca. Along the way, we stopped at a local baker's, saw how roof tiles are made from mud, and visited the ruins of the Inca temple at Raqchi. While in the Puno area, we spent 4 nights at a hotel ... read more

We had great fun riding in a TukTuk to the jetty to catch our boat which was going to be our transport for the next 2 days. Lake Titicaca is a lake located on the border of Peru and Bolivia. It sits 3,800 m above sea level, making it the highest commercially navigable lake in the world. By volume of water, it is also the largest lake in South America. Five major rivers systems feed into Lake Titicaca. In order of their relative flow volumes these are Ramis, Coata, Ilave, Huancané, and Suchez. More than 20 other smaller streams empty into Titicaca, and the lake has 41 islands, some of which are densely populated. Since 2000 Lake Titicaca has experienced constantly receding water levels. Between April and November 2009 alone the water level has sunk by ... read more

The last stop in Peru was to visit a few of the islands on the huge Lake Titicaca. Some islands are made of reeds and float on the lake, which are incredible to see, but not an ideal place to spend the night. Instead we went to a permanent island with 3,500 inhabitants for a traditional Peruvian night. When we arrived at the port there were several families waiting to welcome us. Our host family lived on the other side of the island so we trekked for about 30 minutes to arrive at a small concrete house where a donkey called Maria, 2 cats, 1 dog, 3 children and the Mum and Dad lived. It was pretty basic – no heating or TV, no shower and no flush on the toilet. The meals that were made ... read more

The frontier Bold Border formalities on the Bolivian and Peruvian side were quite quick and the only delay was due to the large number of people on our coach all there at the same time. The tour guide on the bus gave us a information in 4 different languages about the lake and peru. On arrival to Puno we were put in a taxi and taken to a hotel, paying slightly more for a little comfort (about 8 pounds a night for ensuite) cos the lack of toilet seats, running water and hot showers had started to wear us down a little and we also had wi-fi! We ventured out around tea time through the more touristy streets to the harbourside food kiosks/restaurants for more trucha. Puno is a larger town than Copacabama and has a ... read more

Prior to leaving Cusco we visiteda travel agent and booked a coach to Puno and also a trip to the various Islands on Lake Titicaca. I don´t know what happened but we somehow lost our tickets. Luckily the girl from the travel agent offered to pick us up from our Hotel and drive us to the bus station and vouch for us that we had purchased tickets ( she couldn´t reprint new tickets as it was a public holiday). Somehow I don´t think you would get that service in Australia!!! Thats where things changed. We had seats 1A and 1B right at the front of the bus, we remembered that much. However, all us tourists that hopped on the bus from where we did were allocated just random seats. We never did sit in seat 1Aor ... read more

Day 43-18th October At 04:00 I was (without being too graphic) awoken by tummy trouble, it was most certainly the veggie food, either they had put peanuts in it or the food was unclean or off somehow, I couldn’t taste any nuts in it but either way I must urge anyone going to Puno NOT to go to the veggie restaurant no matter how good Alfredo says it is, the people were nice but the food wasn’t nice and it made me ill... very ill. We had to be ready for our tour at 06:00 and I was unsure if I should actually go, Liz said I could stay behind and she would go on her own but I really wanted to see Titicaca so took some Imodium and braved the terrible tummy cramps, in retrospect ... read more

We gave ourselves a day to relax in Cusco after the Machu Picchu trek then took the bus 6 hours south to Puno. We arrived mid-day, checked into our hostel, The Point, and explored the town. Puno is a small city, densley structured around the bank of Lake Titicaca. It was very quiet, hardly any travelers. We ate lunch at a hole in the wall Cevicheria, which we thought was a bit sketcy, but turned out to be one of the best meals we've had yet. Then we shopped around the tour companies and booked a morning tour to the Uros Islands. We were picked up at 9am and brought to the pier to board the boat with 12 other tourists. Lake Titicaca is the world's highest navigable lake and the Uros Islands are it's main ... read more

Ola, Well, it finally happened. We arrived early at a destination!!! 45 minutes early no less!!! However, that 45 minutes early meant that it was 415am when we made it to Puno on the shores of lake Titicaca in southern Peru. We were able to get cab to Bothy Hostel, where security let us in and was kind enough to let us crash in a room, even though we hadn't booked for that night. We got a few hours sleep, and then were treated to an excellent pancake breakfast on the roof, something that we also did not have to pay for. The hostel iotself wasn't the nicest, but what was lacking in paint was made up for in service. Belinda, Val and Peter then were taken to the docks where we went out to Uros. ... read more
