the famous floating islands, today just an attraction and theater for the turists, I can't recommend to everyone. But lago Titicaca with its length over 200 km is one of the highest navigable lakes in the world (around 4.000m above the sea level) and is a great turist attraction.... read more

Tuesday, August 10th: Puno Day 2 - Uros, Amantani Islands: Between the high altitude and having dozed frequently before getting to Puno, we both had a very bad night's sleep. We tried to sleep at 8pm or so, but after tossing and turning and having strange mini-nightmares, I got up at midnight and went for a walk. I had to bother the hotel security guy since the door was locked. I walked down the hill to the Plaza de Armas looking for a soda and/or water. When I asked a group of police patrolling, they pointed to the corner where a vendor was asleep in a doorway. Before I could tell them not to bother him, they'd roused him from a deep sleep. Since he was already awake, albeit sleep-eyed, I bought a Coke and a ... read more

Let´s see...we were at Machu Picchu on a Tuesday and it is now a Monday. The days tend to blend together for us at this point. Where have we been, what have we done since... We spent the next couple of days after visiting Machu Picchu in Cuzco. We relaxed most of the day Wednesday and walked around the city. We made it to the Catherdral--very ornate and beautiful. Steve has some strange fascination to always wanting to see the catacombs in these catherdrals...very dreary down there. The carvings in these catherdrals are mesmerizing. It really makes one think how much time, passion, and skill went into these buildings and its inside. We kept thinking what attending a mass would be like in these cathedrals...beautiful. The city square in Cuzco during the day and night is ... read more

There were 2 aims for out return to Cusco; get Hollies camera fixed and Sunday dinner at the Real McCoy. Before the Real McCoy we found a camera shop that could fix Hollies camera for 160 soles (£40) and if they couldn't fix it, it would only cost 20 soles (a fiver) which we didn't think was bad although didn't hold much hope as the guy who was tryig to fix it looked like Mr Muyagi (karate kid) but with longer finger nails. As Mr Muyagi needed 24 hours to fix the camera we needed to spend another day in Cusco. We wanted somewhere quiet and cheap so booked into a little hotel near Plaza de San Francisco it was ok clean sheets, wifi, Internet, free breakfast and only 50 soles per double room (£12.50). We ... read more

Saturday 3.7.2010 day 262 Floating islands We got up a 6am and had bfast at the hotel then were picked up for our tour. I think the Peruvians deliberately make all the tourists get up early. There were people from all over the world there were New Zealanders. Swedish, English, American, Spanish and Argentineans. Two of the guys were riding around South America on motorbikes. First we went to the Floating where the Iros people live there about 50 of the islands and the people make the islands then selves and separate them if they do not like their neighbours or join up if they want to be new neighbours. So you can never tell how many islands there are. They still live very traditional lives. They have been floating for centaurs and there are no ... read more

Following our lazy stroll in the Bolivian section of lake Titicaca, we decided to move across yet another border into Peru. This was a nice short 5 hour bus ride during daylight hours, so we got to take in the scenery. Unfortunately for us this was not really any different at all to the scenery in Bolivia, with the towns being ugly and dirty, with very little colour or completed buildings… The ladies in their traditional dress however were wearing slightly larger hats. When we arrived in Puno, we were immediately glad that we had stayed in Copacabana for a few days. The town is very drab, with small streets and what feels like dirt everywhere. This was exacerbated by the number of people that actually live in the town. We spent half our time walking ... read more

And to finish off Puno... Being stuck here hasn't been so bad after all. Yesterday there was a big protest which we managed to get right into the middle of but no violence or danger, just lots of people chanting. It also meant that the usually busy city of Puno was a lot quieter as everything was closed. We had a walk around and just got acclimatised. Today we went super early to the Uros Islands and Taquile Island. The Uros Islands are fantastic, we had a great tour and great explanations of how the reed islands are made and even got a little boat trip in the 'Mercedes Benz' of the reed boats! Although we couldn't help but wonder how much of this is real life and how much is put on for show. But ... read more

This morning Sarah was feeling much better. We woke up and took showers (still not hot) then found our free breakfast - same as all the others with bread and strawberry jam. We then caught a "trici-taxi" which is a man on a bicycle with a cart in front for us to ride in. They are everywhere in the city and we only had to pay S3 (about $1) for the 5 minute ride down to the dock. We decided to do the trip on our own without a guide or tour group. Turns out this was just fine, as they give you a little explanation as soon as you get to the first island anyways. We paid S10 for our ticket to the island. Apparently there was another S5 that other tourists had to pay ... read more

Following the ´Gringo Trail´ to Cuzco and the next stop was Puno, on Lake Titicaca on the Peruvian side. We were here to see the ´Floating Islands of Uros´ but enjoyed Puno itself as well. The people are friendly and relatively laid back (especially in comparison to Cuzco) and we enjoyed walking around the town and along the lake side. So off to the floating islands some 30 minutes across the lake on a small boat from Puno port. We cut our way through the reeds and slowly the islands began to reveal themselves in the distance. Our guide gave us some interesting facts to ponder and rounded off with his well rehearsed wise crack about how, although they share the lake with Bolivia, Peru likes to think they own the ´Titi´and Bolivia the ´caca´! The ... read more

Karly and I headed out of Cusco and into Puno, which sits on the Peruvian side of Lake Titicaca. Truely, I wasn´t all that impressed... the floating islands (Reed Island/Isla de Uros) is one of the touristy-ist things I have ever done in my life! The island is made out of reeds and when the bottom starts decroding they replace the top with new reeds. They say that the people live there but I´m not convinced... Anyhow, here are some pictures of Puno, the tiny town of nothing, and las islas flotantes. ... read more
