After another early morning wake up this time 7am, we helped ourselves to the free breakfast and packed a bag our overnight trip to the islands on Lake Titicaca. We got told that our bus would be picking us up at 8:30am, so it was a massive suprise when there was a knock at the door from a guy saying he was here to pick us up. This brought about mad panic as three of us were still unready...unusually it was me, mr last minute.com that was ready. We quickly had to go to reception to check out and pay the tab. once in the minbus we did a back street tour of puno stopping off at what felt like every other hostel in Puno. We eventually got to the port where we boarded our boat ... read more

We went on a boat tour on Lake Titikaka which, upside down is shaped like a puma hunting a rabbit. It is a huge lake at 3800m above sea level so one of the highest navigable lakes in the world. The guide we had was great he was telling us all about the Aiamara and Quechua tribes that used to live around the lake who have their own languages and traditions. We visited Uros a group of floating islands where they speak Quechua andhave houses, kitchens, lookout points, primary schools and a basic medical centre all built from reeds. The islands themselves are also built from peet, with reeds laid on the top. We got dressed up in traditional dress by a girl called Melissa who was so friendly and was telling us about her life ... read more

Buonasera, Well am back on line after being incommunicando for the last few days...... Its 10pm and am in The Posada Nueva Espana in Arequipa, after a six hour bus journey from Lake Titicaca sitting next to an old woman who had brought along with her what seemed to be all her worldly possessions, but that wasnt the problem, if I could convey smellovision to you.......unbelievable!!!! Ok back to yesterday morning, I was picked up at 7.30 then taken to the edge of the lake to get my boat to the Uros floating Islands. Am at an altitude of 3800mt so am feeling it a bit. These Islands are amazing in as much as they have been made by the inhabitants from the reeds that grow in the lake. They have to be anchored down to ... read more

Hello! With illness finally behind us, we were finally ready to see Uros Island or the floating islands. The Uros people made there homes on the reeds growing in Lake Titicaca even before the Incas, centuries ago to stay away from some other more aggressive tribes that were in the area. The islands are built using layers of the bouyant totora reeds that grow in the shallows of lake Titicaca. Several hundred still live this lifestyle. Each reed island houses 3 to 4 families. They have a school and hospital on these reeds as well. When you walk on the islands, they are very soft and springy. A very unique experience. They have to replace the top layer of reeds every 15 days or so depending on the weather. They make their homes, boats, and crafts ... read more

I´ll try to finish up Lake Titikaka quickly. Dinner was amazing. Gladys spoke maybe 20 words of English, Spanish, and their local language. Her neice spoke a little bit of Spanish as well. Between Lisa and I, we used French (some of the words are similar), our limited knowledge of Spanish, and Enlgish to communicate with Gladys and her neice. We were able to talk about the sports we play, our age, and where we were from. Our dinner consisted of a vegetable soup with potatoes, and a rice dish with more potatoes and vegetables. Both were really good. Our local tour guide gave us a sheet with a few words in english, spanish and their local language. We made an attempt to Gladys that the meal was really good in their native language, but I ... read more

We left for Lake Titicaca very early in the morning and my host mother made me a sack lunch for the 6 hr bus ride. I haven’t had a sack lunch since early high school if not before…it was kinda nice. The ride was long even though we actually got to travel in a real bus for once. Even as we were making to drive from Cusco to Puno, I could feel the altitude changing. When we finally stepped off the bus, almost all of us felt a little ping in our heads and turn in our stomachs. We didn’t have time to adjust however since we got directly on a boat to go to the floating island that would be our home for the night. On the 40 min boat ride we watched another boat ... read more

Just a short blog entry for my final stay in Peru. Left Cusco early morning to catch the bus to Puno which only managed to break down once! (luckily another bus was only 30mins away). Arrived in Puno late afternoon to the pouring rain so got the first available hostal, dumped our ever increasing rucksacks (there are too many amazing textiles and jewellery to purchase!) and went for a wander. Puno isnt that beautiful a place, however its very close to Lake Titicaca, in fact a ten minute walk away so it has its benefits! We took a boat over to the floating islands the following morning which were pretty incredible. Made entirely from reeds and populated by the Uros people, it certainly has a sense of calm and tranquility to it. The surfaces were pretty ... read more

We left for Puno on a tour bus and stopped at a number of small towns along the way. Andahuaylillas, Rumicolca, Pucara and Raqchi were Incan and pre-Incan towns famous for their architecture and history We arrived in Puno with a temporary travel companion called Peter, a Dutch art historian living in Paris and very much a self-professed European. He was a nice lad and he set us up in another nice hostel where we were to stay for 2 nights and attempt to recuperate from the previous week´s activities. The sweet old couple who ran the hostel booked our trip to the island for us so off we set not knowing anything about what was ahead of us. With nothing more than a bindle on our backs with some essentials we hopped on the boat ... read more

So we had found a bus company that were prepared to take us through the striking farmers passage of violence, though the downside was that it was a proper tour bus and we had to become one of the things I never wanted to become; a tourist following some leader like a lemming, telling us facts that were complete bollocks, but it was a small price to pay to be finally escaping Cusco. It had become a dangerous place for me, especially on the physco women front. Anyway, we visited Inca sites that were complete rubbish and apparently only 1% original Inca, but we did stop at the top of a mountain pass and had a superb view and was incidently the highest point I had ever been, though I didn´t exactly have to work hard ... read more
