3-4 April 2011 – Mancora, Peru After a long 5 hour drive to southern Ecuador, through windy and some dirt roads (including being held up for 45 minutes due to a land-slide), we arrived at the Ecuador-Peru border. Wow, what an ‘interesting’ border crossing system. This is how it went: 1. Off the bus and get our passport stamped to get out of Ecuador 2. Onto a different bus where the bus company asked us to record our name and passport number in duplicate 3. We drove about 2 kms just past the border (a very dirty river demarcated Ecuador from Peru) and we stopped again to get our passport stamped for Peru 4. WE then drove a little further when we stopped in front of a building, got out of the bus, walked in one ... read more

Hey hey We have been in the lovely Mancora for a week now and life is good! We are checked into Loki indefinitely and have a great dorm room with a bunch of girls from various parts of the globe who are all really lovely - so we got a little possy happening which is really cool! Mancora is absolutely goregous! The sun shines all day every day. The water is blue and warm. It´s ridiculously cheap. The people are friendly and the food is great! Life doesn´t get much sweeter than Mancora! The days are filled with lying on the beach under an umbrella ordering food and drinks from the cafes nearby! Surfing lessons occassionally but I went out day before yesterday and got a RUDE shock when I realised the swell had picked up ... read more

8th Nov 2010 Having spent a few weeks in Mancora enjoying the sun, The job I come up here to do didn't pan out but thats ok better it happens now than when I am well into it. Mancora is a little different to a year ago, The road paving that was going on last year is now completed, The Artisania market is very pretty now with benches and new plants, making it a pleasant area to chill out and people watch, also the main street to the beach is is paved and clean, no longer a dirt track, the colorful shop fronts and restaurants looking pretty sharp. Some businesses have disappeared while other have popped up. The string of colorful tents that last year flanked the beach are gone with the seafront restaurants serving their ... read more

As soon as we crossed the border into Peru the temperature rose by about 10 degrees, and we saw the sun for the first time in a while which was a nice welcoming. We entered via the Panamerican Highway which runs parallel to the coast, between the mountains and the sea. After about half an hour of driving through grassy land, we were into a barren and rugged landscape not dissimilar to that in The Hills Have Eyes. We were driving through the same unhabitable environment for what seemed like forever, when all of a sudden a town started to appear. Only on the coastal side of the road however, the other side remained rugged. We had arrived in Mancora which is a small beach/surfing resort in the north of Peru, and was our destination of ... read more

After our evening in Lima we headed to Mancora, Peru's best  know surf town, for some more r&r in the sun.  On arrival the town appears nothing more than a small collection of concrete and 'giant bamboo' shacks. However our hostel was one of the nicest we've stayed at with a lovely pool and bar and also complete with its own petting zoo (1 cat, 1 kitten, 1 dog and 7 puppies!).  We spent four days here chilling out by the pool or on the beach and enjoying some of the good food the small town has to offer (lots of fish). We also got to meet up with some friends, Nicola and Laura, who we first met back in San Pedro and have coincidentally since enjoyed the salt flats, inca trail (which we all booked ... read more

And now I have finally arrived in Peru, as always, completely behind schedule. My last weeks in Ecuador were decadent, a little lonely and fascinating. After a couple of days lazing in Canoa, I headed south to Puerto Lopez, and it was on this bus ride that I became convinced that the men on the coast are very very different from the men in the mountains. On this one short ride, I was propositioned twice. Once by a sweaty eighteen year old who asked outright if i would kiss him on the lips! After a firm refusal a second boy replaced the first, and from nowhere produced a long stemmed pink rose for me. It was a little overwhelming. The men in the town as well are very forward and spend most of their days leering, ... read more

From Trujillo, we headed north to Mancora, a gringo's paradise. A quaint little surfing village, with mainly English speaking establishments, in the very northern part of Peru. When we arrived, we tried to check into the famous Loki hostel, a massive hostel complex, resembling a hotel moreso than a hostel. As it was the final of the World Cup while we were there, we wanted to stay somewhere with a good athmosphere. Unfortunately, there was no room at the inn at The Loki hostel, so we booked ourselves into another small hotel nearby. We watched the World Cup in the Loki hostel and the Dutch fans were out in force. So I became a fairweather Dutch supporter for the day, to fit in with the crowd. Unfortunately, we were disappointed, the Dutch fans presumably more than ... read more

Writing you from the last left of our trip and the third installment of our series 'Engagement Honeymoon in Peru', this installment is called 'Mancora Beach Getaway' . After a stopover in the not-so-pleasant Machala, we continued on back over the border into Peru - and it might sound like sarcasm but I swear its not - I had missed Peru. My time in Ecuador was marred with parasites and I know it was too rushed to make a proper judgement, so I will make an improper judgement: I like Peru much more than Ecuador. Other than being a little pricey, Ecuador came off as very American-wanna-be (tons of 'American Clothing' stores, using US currency, etc) and Peru has an undeniable character that her Ecuadorian brother has lost is his search for the American dream. The ... read more

Lazy days. After leaving Trujillo we've headed north to relax by the beach for a few days - this time to a place called Mancora. It's a real tourist town after what we've had for the last couple of months, you can't move for sunglasses salesmen and 2x1 drinks offers! Still, we're in a posh little bungalow with hammock and a flower bed in the bathroom! Leaving SKIP was a bit wierd, quite sad really. You live and work with the same people for a couple of months and then you're off. It's a shame to be leaving all the grubby little kids too. Made some good friends, and had some great times though so that was all good. Also had a good leaving do where we took over a balcony in a bar and saw ... read more
