An unplanned, unexpected - and hence thoroughly unwelcome - overnight bus journey whisks us westwards from Chachapoyas, dumping us most unceremoniously in the coastal city of Chiclayo at the ever-so-slightly-inconvenient hour of five in the morning. We've been given dire warnings by various people in our first few days in Peru about wandering around cities after dark - "you'll be robbed", said one lady outright - so feel rather uneasy stumbling out of the bus all bleary eyed into Chiclayo's morning fog. A quick phone call later and a sympathetic hotel owner has agreed to let us have what one might call an "early check-in". Disaster averted - it was that or wait, exhausted, in the bus terminal for several hours (with a distinctly unhappy Alex for company!)... Peru's northern coast was, in centuries past, home ... read more

Day 252 Tuesday 19th June We started the day with breakfast overlooking the water before the fun of town and trying to get money out again. We walked along the beach to town which takes about 35 minutes and at low tide is easy, but at high tide has you scrambling over rocks. We are lucky today on our walk as it is low tide so we got the easy walk, but once in town we have to face the ATM machines and as we tried each one we had the same result, no money. We finally got to one of the last machines in town and there was a screen around it and guards working on it, a glimmer of hope. Two American girls were already queuing, as the screen was removed and they approached ... read more

Vi valgte oss ... read more

We've all heard of the Inca society and know about the Spanish invading this part of the world but there were impressive pyramid building societies throughout Peru long before the Inca. We visited a fantastic museum today and a couple of Moche archaeological sites where gold, jewels and intrigue to match Egypt's pyramids continue to be uncovered. The pyramids are constructed of mud brick and adobe so with the weathering look like hills which is why the Spaniards missed them and they had people living on them until 1987 when a greedy member of a grave robbing group was unhappy with his cut dobbed his mates into the cops and they told some archaeologists. Look up "lords of sipan" if you're interested. The Lambayeque pyramids that we saw at Tucume were not burial chambers but religious ... read more

If you think Peru is all about the Incas, think again. Two thousand year ago a mysterious and little know civilaization inhabited the north of Peru. In recent years archaeologists – with a little help from graverobbers – have uncovered some of the most fabulous pottery and jewellery ever to emerge from an ancient civilization: the remains of the Moche Extrat from a recent BBC programme on the subject: Dr LUIS JAIME CASTILLO (Catholic University of Peru): The Moche were the Greeks of Andean culture, they created an exquisite society. NARRATOR: They built a culture of extravagant wealth and extreme violence. Dr TOM DILLEHAY (Vanderbilt University): This was a society obsessed with blood letting, we see it in the skeletal record and we see it in the art and iconography ... read more

Bereits de... read more

We arrived to Chiclayo, in northern Peru, the morning of January 5th to meet Miguel and Angela and to do some sightseeing. Our first day we signed up for a full day tour with one of the local tour companies. We were scheduled to visit two museums and one archaeological site between 11am and 6pm. The cost of the tour, for the four of us, was 140 Soles (about 11 USD per person). The tour rate included transportation for the day and an English speaking guide. Our first stop was the National Museum of Sican. Sican was a pre-Incan culture group from northern Peru, what is now known as Lambayeque. The Sican culture existed between circa 700 and 1400 CE (common era or AD/after the birth of Christ). Members of the Sican culture worked as ... read more
