Graeme parcourt la pampa en suivant les canalisations pour mesurer des débits entre autres choses. Nos plans : On sort du pays ce WE pour des questions de Visa, direction équateur. Back to bloging after a few weeks (ok, a few months...) of silence. We’re staying in Chiclayo, known as the city of friendship. The weather is hot and sunny, the beaches are nearby and the people really are friendly. Everyday we get up and jump into the cramped Combis (minivans that act as buses and carry up to 29 people!!!!) or Colectivos (personal cars that give lifts to people for a few coins), if your lucky you get to sit on the handbrake!! Both of them have hot salsa or cumbia blazing away. They also drive like they’d risk their lives to get a few extra passengers. ça fait bientot 2 mois que j'ai rien ajouté a mon blog, je sais je sais je donne plus trop de nouvelles. Mais tout arrive. Nous sommes arrivés a Chiclayo depuis le retour des iles Galapagos pour nous fixer, trouver une ONG et un appart. La recherche de travail volontaire a été assez épique : on est passé d'ONG en ONG en demandant a chaque fois d'autres adresses et ça s'est vite transformé en porte a porte. On a faillit choisir de travailler sur l'analyse de la chaine de production de lait de la région, en gros aller dans la pampa pour compter les vaches et demander si les gens veulent en faire du beure, du lait ou du fromage... Trujillo Arriving on the late bus, we had little choice but to take a dodgey hotel, the type with hourly visitors, until the next morning when we changed to a slightly cleaner, huge, old hotel a block away. I got ill here (liquado con agua was the culprit) and so, spent a lot of time in the room/bathroom whilst Sal checked out the city. There are numerous archeological sites around this area - the Moche and Chicama valley. We only visited a couple because, quite frankly, after seeing one, I sort of got the picture of what the others would be like. I´m also not big on ruins. It´s just not my thing man. Our arrival at Chiclayo was relievingly uneventful and without drama we checked into the (somewhat strange smelling) Hostal Sican. We had decided to stop in the north of Peru to check out the ancient and supposedly incredible ruins that are even now still being excavated and discovered, and that receive far fewer visitors than Machu Pichu and the south of the country in general. It was with this in mind that we set off on our first day in Chiclayo to meet the long deceased Lord of Sipan. His remains, and those of many other elite members of his society, were discovered in the 90's at a large crumbling site built entirely of adobe mud bricks. Friday, July 15 Early this morning, we went with William´s parents, brother, sister and her kids to have breakfast in Chiclayo before heading to Mocupe. Amanda was thrilled when she read there were pancakes on the menu! Of course, they were a little different, and filled with manjar (caramel made from condensed milk) but she LOVED them so much she had 2!! Jesus, my brother in law Gobert, Amanda, tia Elena, Pablito, and Anthony at breakfast. YUMMY! Mocupe is the small agricultural town my father in law is from- it is where the ESQUENs are from and a town we should be proud of and want to know more about. Thursday, July 14 We boarded our bus (El Dorado) in downtown Mancora- it was pretty full from the previous stop in Tumbes) around 11pm, and let me tell you that as soon as I got on, I wanted to turn around and get off! The air in that bus was hot and stale, and I felt instanly clautrophobic. I honestly thought I was going to have a panic attack and all I could think was ¨There is NO WAY I am going to last 6 hours on HERE!!!!!¨ As I looked around and saw most people sleeping, wearing jackets and coats, I knew there were would be NO AC and there was no other way to get out of town. Yet again, we are in waiting in an Internet café for our overnight bus at 10 p.m. But this time we have some King Kong to keep us company. King Kong is a sweet that is made up of layers of shortbread and filling (manjar blanco, piña, maní) that is typical of Northern Perú. Tonight we leave Chiclayo and head to the border with Ecuador, which we will enter tomorrow morning. After leaving Huaraz on an overnight bus, we arrived early in the morning in Trujillo. Trujillo is the third largest city in Perú, but the center area (where we hung out) has a small town feel. Lots of old colonial buildings with bright colored paint jobs.
