On se demande ... read more

Over the weekend I was walking around town and some men invited me over to sit with them. “Hey gringo” was the delivery they used, very friendly of course, and I sat down. They were drinking a fabulous looking drink made of ice called a raspardilla, Peruvian snow cone. The man making the snow cones had a massive block of ice, maybe ten pounds, that he shaved the pieces off of right in front of me, then put it into a glass and drowned with a mysterious red syrup. It was one of the most beautiful tastes I had ever tasted. All I could manage to find out about the flavor is that it was a fresh local fruit called tamarindo. I drank the drink and went home. I spent the rest of the day very ... read more

There aren’t enough hours in the day to talk with everyone who stopped me or yelled “gringo” on the street. I sat down to watch some kids play soccer today. As soon as they saw me they ambushed me, throwing what I assume were questions at me, as fast as racecars. I gathered that they were all family, brothers, sisters, cousins and when I looked up the adults were standing in the door waving, inviting me in. It must be a custom here, that when your invited into somebody’s home they automatically give you food and drink, in this case, fried duck and beer. A great, friendly family, the parents of the kids outside. Yesterday I had what I call “The revenge of the Incas”…violent diarrhea. I stayed pretty close to the house most of the ... read more

Today I saw it all. The good the bad and the ugly of Peru. It was the best day so far. We spent part of the morning at the university in Lambayeque. We then hopped a taxi to San Jose, a dusty fishing village about 10 miles from Lambayeque. The main road to San Jose is a bone rattling dirt road, the main road mind you, through some of the poorest landscape I have ever seen. The campo, or country side, is a series of adobe dwellings, most with no paint and seem to have only one room, kept very tidy as they have no possessions to “junk” the place up. The faces I saw in San Jose said everything there was to say about the current state of things. Most buildings were crumbling or worse ... read more

(I'm tired and will not have a chance to proofread this for a bit...read only if that doesn{t scare you) That´s what has become of us, it seems that is all we are now. Where once there were two thinking, sentient, human beings with emotions and feelings to share, there are now just two gastroenterological wrecks. For me this is hardly a problem, as a fellow for whom the word 'civilized' has hardly been used as a description, I had little to lose. Lycia, on the other hand, as previous to now well mannered young lady, has fallen quite far. The ravages of Bolivian/Peruvian cuisines are merciless. The four day Salar de Uyuni trip (a month ago, blog forthcoming, eventually) was where we were blinsided first, and by an enemy we never suspected...a pizza. It looked ... read more

My apologies to all of you who have anxiously been awaiting blog entries for the last four days- we have been in Cusco since Saturday and today (Monday) is the first opportunity I have had to get to the internet! Trust me when I say this is making me crazy! So, not too much went on for day 20. We got to sleep in, which is always a good thing! Met at 10:45 in the lobby to head to a local market, Monsefú, to do a little shopping. Besides eating, shopping is right up there on activities of frequency! (Not that I am complaining...) Not in the least! The market was just ok, pretty small, and smelled like urine. The only thing I ended up buying was a hammock, which I am really hoping to be ... read more

2nd day of observation at the military school today- got to see a social studies class and a chemistry class. Very interesting experience in the chem class- the students had a quiz on the periodic table of elements. The teacher would say the name of an element, and the students would have to write down formula that represents each element. The students were talking through the entire quiz, cheating visibly, and one student even had a cheat sheet! The teacher caught him though, and without a word took his quiz and cheat sheet. I am not sure why the difference in behavior during this particular class- at the military academy the students have all been very well-behaved and respectful. This teacher happened to be the only female teacher I observed here, so I do not ... read more

I gotta say I am really enjoying being here in Chiclayo! The weather is beautiful - 70´s most of the time, clean, fresh air and clean streets too! And they have mototaxis here! Yippy! Not nearly as many as there were in Iquitos, but I still get to enjoy riding. More taxis here though, but less air pollution then in Lima. I would also like to add that the "hombres" in Chiclayo are better-looking overall then all of the other places we have visited in Perú! Soooo, today we began our observations at the military academy, Colegio Militar Elias Aguirre. Had to dress a little nicer for this visit- couldn´t get away with the new cargo pants I bought last night! I will probably wear them for most of the next couple weeks though- soooo ... read more

Oy, lots to share and it´s already 11:00pm... can´t get to sleep too late tonight either. Long day ahead tomorrow! Here we go! Day 17 started with a busride (in our tour bus) to an archaelogical museum, Museo Arqueologico Nacional Bruning, which offered a collection of ancient Peruvian artifacts from the pre-Incan period through the Incan period. As we were leaving the museum, we had another opportunity to see the local protestors, marching in the streets and escorted by the local police. For more information on the current strike in Perú, visit Peruprotests Off to lunch at El Rincón del Pato, where I had my first and last taste of tortilla de raya, or stingray tortilla. A little fishy for me. I did, however, enjoy the Cocktail de Algarrobina, a drink made from carob. For the ... read more

Wake-up time at 5:30am today... yeeech! But the bus was coming to take us to the airport at 6am, right? Not exactly... The tiny little van arrived at about 6:20, and there wasn´t a snowball´s chance in hell we were all going to fit on the van with the luggage. Soooo, we divided into two groups, I was in the first group. Headed to the airport and got there at about 6:45. (Our flight was scheduled to leave at 7:35) The second group was right behind us, or so we thought. Now it´s 7:00am, and they are closing the check-in counters. Group two still hadn´t arrived. And Natalie was in group two, with the bag of snacks! (aka my breakfast) 7:15, no sign of them. 7:30... 7:45.... boarding the plane, and no group two! The next ... read more
