…… and here is that afore mentioned instalment. Your correspondent arrived here via a bus and an article read in the Peruvian press by W. The article held promise of a relaxed city with a plaza surrounded by colourful town halls and cathedrals. The article was not without accuracy. There are two main attractions here, one being Chan Chan , the other being Huaca de Luna. With names like these how could they be resisted. We asked our landlady who was attired in a luxurious velvety green dressing gown how to get to Chan Chan and she told us to leave the hostal, turn left and get a local bus. To the amazement of your correspondent, this proved a most correct set of directions. Chan Chan is staggering. Although built much later than Chivan ( see ... read more

After a night bus from Lima, I arrived in the city of Trujillo - Peru’s third city and the capital of the north. 12km north west of the city centre is the small fishing village of Huanchaco, and as this is where all the budget accommodation is located, I decided to stay here. The village itself is very nice, with clean sandy beaches and a pier stretching into the pacific, but away from the sea front it seemed a bit grotty. The hostel was nice enough though, and the sunsets over the beach and sea were spectacular. All the main attractions were however in Trujillo, but there were frequent enough buses (albeit rather slow ones). I thought the centre was nice enough; the main square is very ornate, as are the main thoroughfares that form the ... read more

Heading 600km north to Trujillo we were glad to see the back of Lima. The main attraction here is Chan Chan a mud city built in the early 14th century, there are a couple of other archaelogical sites as well and the city itself has a nicely restored centre - which is painted in bright colours, so nice after the grey of Lima. After the bad experiences we've had with organised tours we DIY'd it today which is a bit more difficult but it gives us the control we want and the flexibility to do things in our own time - we weremuch happier :-) This area is so dry Chan Chan has survived to various degrees for ~700 years, pretty cool. Only one part of it is open, but the whole site is huge, it ... read more

Day 56: Sunday 24th August - Overcast on the beach in Huanchaco Up early to catch a bus to Trujillo, Peru's third city at 7am. Its a three hour journey and I decide to catch an early bus because I'm conscious of travelling quickly through Northern Peru to maximise time in what appears the more attractive (well to the tourist) South of the country. I have 2 weeks to get to Cusco for my Inca trail to start and want to spend 2 days in and around Trujillo, so that necessitates the early start. When I get to Trujillo I catch a taxi to Huanchaco, a beach resort 6 miles to the west of Trujillo.....it appeals to stay on the beach rather than in another city.....and this could be my last opportunity for some time. Get ... read more

We arrived in Trujillo on Wednesday the 2nd of July. It´s a nice colonial city with lots of archeological sites from the Moche and Chimu civilizations. Chimu were right before the Incas and the Moches preceded the Chimus. Do not get confused. Moche, then Chimu, then Incas. We did a few tours to various sites such as Chan Chan, which was the capital of the Chimus. We also saw Las Huacas de La Luna y Sol, which were temples from the Moche civilization. We liked the Moche style as it is more fun and colourful than the Chimu stuff. We were also intrigued by La Señora de Cao (Moche) who was discovered at El Brujo Complex back in 2005, a female mummy with lots of tattoos on her body! We didn´t get to see her, as ... read more

A little summary from the northern part of Peru Huacas del Sol y de la Luna The northern part of Peru has been a home for many different civilizations stretching about 5000 years back in time. Around Trujillo you can find archaeological places and remains from the Chimu people and Moche culture as the two biggest ones. After I changed my plans and decided to go to Galapagos, I had some time during that day to visit Huacas del Sol y de la Luna, which is two big temples build by the Moche people. Huaca del Sol is the largest structure in Peru, from the Pre-Colombian time. The temples was built by using around 140 million bricks. It´s two impressive constructions and I had a guided tour in Huacas de la Luna (in Spanish...!). This temple ... read more

June 4: We made the journey to Guayaquil over a week ago, but soon found ourselves overwhelmed by the sweltering heat, pollution, and chaos of Ecuador´s largest city. So we boarded a bus in search of greener (and cooler) pastures. Crossing back in to the Andes, we settled into a gem of a city at Cuenca, in the south of the country. After taking a day to explore the area´s cobblestone allyways and quite plazas (and idling by the town´s meandering river with a carton of chocolate milk and not a care in the world), we were enlightened by the friendly vendors at the Casa del la Mujer (Women´s market) about their crafts and wares and seduced by a brilliant sunset over the Andes. We stumbled into the party scene that night and mingled with Germans, ... read more
