Peru's ancient civilisations: More than just the Incas Cloudy skies and desert landscapes are the memories I will take from our time in northern Peru. This region is much less popular with tourists than the south of the country, but, with sights such as the stunning mountains around Huaraz and the pre-Columbian ruins at Trujillo, there are plenty of reasons to visit. We left the mountains of Huaraz behind and descended to Trujillo on the coast via overnight bus. I remember waking up early on the bus and looking out to the contrasting scenes of the Pacific Ocean on one side and the arid desert on the other. Despite being in a desert, I don't think we saw the sun between Huaraz and the Ecuadorian border - the skies were always covered by thick clouds but, ... read more

After staying in a dismal town called Alausi we pretty much stayed on a bus for the next few days. We stayed in Cuenca where the room was so horrific (the bathroom looked like something out of a horror film) that after a few beers for supper, we booked into somewhere else with only the clothes on our back. After Cuenca was another bus to Tumbes, the border town of Ecuador and Peru. In Peru we went on to Piura and then the next day we arrived in Trajillo, a huge bustling city where at every intersection of road, whoever gets there first has right of way! It has been good to stop for a few days and gather our senses! We visited a 'black beach' that Will was quite pleased about and we also visited ... read more

On the 27th September, after a very busy three weeks in France, with a side trip to Spain, we flew back to Cayenne in French Guyana. We had a nice surprise when the airline company had to make a change to our flight which meant that we got to spend a night in a relatively posh hotel in Martinique before taking a connecting flight to Cayenne. It was very nice winding down in the hotel pool after the long flight and then going on to a complementary evening meal. Only problem was, with the time difference and the fatigue from our rushing around in France I was pretty much falling asleep at the table over dinner. In the short time we were in Martinique we didn’t get to see much of the island, which seemed very ... read more

Well it would be good I know but at the moment it els like another distarction from actually being in the now in this new country. Peru an amazing place. On the coast at the moment after a mooch through the mountains. Very diferent up there. I love the thin air and the chill made me fel at home I suppose. We had thermal baths and steep climbs to ancient pre Inca Hill Forts. Fred found arrow heads which he gave to the local museum amd Jess found himself with his own private guide around this vast fortress. WE had it all to ourselves which made it all the more magical.... read more

Despite the location saying Trujillo we actually stayed in a nearby "surfing town" (as everyone knows we are both a couple of surf-dudes at heart) about five miles from Trujillo. This was because, having stayed in cities for all of our trip apart from the Galapagos, we fancied a bit of a change and some sea air. It was a good choice; Trujillo looked like most of the other cities... lots of people, lots of taxis, lots of traffic fumes. Having a day to spare (on Saturday) we took the bus into Trujillo (more of which later), in order to get a taxi to ´Huaco de la Luna´and ´Huaca del Sol´(Temple of the Moon and Sun respectively). These are two temples built by the Moche people between 100 and 700 A.D. The Sun temple is closed ... read more

Today we went on a tour of Huaca del Sol y Luna, and of Chan Chan, two different sites around Trujillo. Huaca del Sol y Luna (the temples of the sun and moon) are two pyramids of the Moche culture, which ruled between 100 and 900 AD. As soon as we got there, we saw a Peruvian hairless dog. These dogs have a high body temperature, and were used as bed warmers in ancient times. Then we went inside the temple of the moon, which was the religious center, and saw lots of mosaics of their god. We didn´t go inside the temple of the sun, which was the administrative center, because it is collapsed. Later, we went to Chan Chan, the ruins of a huge city of the Chimu, which ruled between around 900 AD ... read more

We got to Trujillo today, after another 7 hours on a bus (actually two buses and we waited an hour between, but who cares). The buses in Peru (or at least the ones we´ve taken so far) are very different than the buses in Ecuador. They are much newer, more comfortable, and they don´t stop every 5 minutes for passengers with bags of rice or corn or whatever. Also, when you buy a ticket, it goes on a computer, and you can choose your seat and everything. Hi Tech. Tomorrow, we´re going on a tour to various archeological sites around Trujillo, and then we´re taking a night bus to Huaraz. We bought the most expensive tickets in a bus-cama (bed), so I hope we´ll be able to sleep on the bus. Also, if you´ve heard something ... read more

Hola Hola !!!!
