Like I was already in the ocean, my ears were completely plugged from the change of air pressure as I stepped out of the bus that took me here from the mountains. It was foggy and cold in Trujillo; too cold for a beach town close to the equator. I immediately took a cab to Huanchaco, a small fishing (and nowadays also surfing) village just 15 km north since it was told to have great waves and laidback yet cool atmosphere. It was 7 am when I finally arrived at La Casa Suisa, supposedly a cool hostel frequented by surfers. I quickly realized that it was really a dump (why do all the guide books crave about it so much), but I was too dead (like the town at that hour) and decided to stay ... read more

So, now we have spent a couple of weeks here in Trujillo. And yes it has been very quiet in on the Blog, have had to much things to adjust to over here! Well, as I said in the last entry, was that I live with a woman called Doris. In my house there was two other girls (from USA) who was sharing a room, but one of them (Andrea) left this morning to go back home. What's nice though is that we have a new girl here now (also from the states) which is sharing my room. Chris has his own room out in the garden of his family's house, and his own bathroom. It's a nice place. His house is much bigger than our apartment, and they have a really ugly rooster (tupp), which ... read more

Well, last night I rearranged my whole trip. I went to the Lan offices here in the square and changed my flight from Chiclayo to Lima on Friday, to be from Trujillo to Lima this afternoon. Alli and I agreed that she would recover better in Lima, and there were many restaurants, nightlife, shopping, museums and other things to do there. We managed to get back into a smaller room at Second Home in Barranco. So last night, I want to say I did go for a walk around Trujillo and the center is very pretty. And furthermore, it seems prosperous and carefree, happy to be itself. I felt like an outsider, walking alone and seeing no other gringos, but I also felt invisible, free to observe. The main shopping street is Jr. Francisco Pizzaro and ... read more

Today we are in Trujillo and it is not a great day. I am sure under different circumstances I would give this bright and sunny city a chance. Under the circumstances, I am looking forward greatly to returning to the Second Home in Lima. We were originaly going to be in Trujillo for two days and go on to Chiclayo for another two days. However, Alli got very sick in Lima and we pressed on to Trujillo. Yet, it is not grabbing us. We are missing the comfortable environs of Second Home in Barranco, and we know that Lima has much to entertain us with .. cinemas, shows, restaurants, museos, perhaps even a cruise to the Islas Palominos. I am also very tired and I am speaking Spanish all the time, but it´s hard for me ... read more

Hi All Been 2 weeks or so since I had a little tap at the old and somewhat crusty keybord here in Tujillo. To fill you in, Well firstly have started the volunteering in Bruce Peru, the day consists of getting up at about half 7, sometimes making rolls for the children and then at about 8.30 we head off to one of the 5 locations to help teach. Most of the locations are in the shanty towns on the outskirts of Tujillo, few have running water or power but that is something I have come to expect. In general the schools are pretty dire, in the fact that they eaither have dirt or straight concrete floors, crusty tables and plastic stools. But I guess that is kind of what I was expected when applying ... read more

We arrived in Trujillo bright and early (7am) and whilst at the bus terminal deciding on our accommodation we were "greeted" by the usual predatory taxi drivers. After mentioning our choice of hostel he informed us that this was not a good place to stay and that he had a much better option. After offering his suggestion he promptly disappeared...strange, but we were glad of a little peace so thought nothing of it as Lonely Planet is often way off the mark when it comes to classifying accommodation. Anyway, before long another cabbie appears and after offering our second choice he tells us that this place no longer exists - hang on a minute, there´s a pattern developing here!! Realising that we would get nowhere with our choices we agreed to go with the second ... read more

On the way to Huanchaco we visited a Chimú fort - Paramonga. We climbed to the top and were rewarded with fantastic views. We didn't like Huanchaco. It looks very dodgy with not much going on. Our accommodation was OK with a good restaurant. Huanchaco is famous for the beaches but we didn't see it during the day time and the weather was not good. The main reason for going to Huanchaco was to visit Chan Chan, the Chimú city. We visited one of the walled citadels made of adobe (mud bricks). When a king died they would leave him in the citadel and build a new one next door. We followed the fish signs with the guide. There was some lovely detail on the walls, pelicans and fish. It was a bit of a maze ... read more

The lady of my house is Doris. I don't know how old she is, but she has a son who is 36 and a son who is 26. In the apartment there is three bedrooms, one for two volunteers from USA who arrived a week before me, one room for me and then one for Doris and her son Lino. The apartment is of course very different from anything at home, and there is not even a fridge, but it's homie and the area where it is seems fine. And the best of all, it's actually just by the neighbourhood where Chris is gonna live! Well, going back a bit in time.. to tell you about Colca Canyon and if I have time, Nazca Lines: We arrived in Arequipa (the biggest city close to Colca ... read more

We decided to do day bus trips from now. The night trip to Cuzco still haunts us. We caught a regular bus from Lima to Trujillo and were 2 of only five that started the trip. More people got on along the way, but we were the only English speakers. The bus driver gave us 2 seats each at the front of the bus so that we would spread out and have a window each and a good view. As more people got on the bus driver and his assistant shooed them further back so that we could stay comfortable. We stopped for lunch somewhere and we had a quick bite, because we did not know how long the stop was and when we returned to the bus we found the driver talking excitedly on his ... read more

Now we are here, at the end of the trip. Or at least where we are gonna spend our last weeks in South America. We arrived to Trujillo this morning and we have been able to look around the city a bit, and it's loud but quite pretty with it's old colonial houses. Chris has already been away to meet the family his gonna stay with for the next 10 weeks. So this is what I'm doing when he's away socialising! :-) I'm gonna get picked up tomorrow by the Son of the family that I'm gonna stay with, at 6 o' clock though, because it's Mother's Day here tomorrow so everyone is very busy.. and then I start at the orphanage on Monday, and Chris starts his school, he's actually gonna live in the ... read more
