We arrived in Ica, a large city just 5kms from Huacahina at about 6am. We hopped in a taxi, sleep deprived (it was not a bad bus but probably the least comfortable journey we have had yet for some reason) and before we knew it we were booked into a hostel and grabbing a nap. Although we arrived as dawn broke I couldn’t believe this quiet little town was so close but felt so far away from an overpopulated metropolis. Huacachina, pronounced Wack-a-Chee-na, is a little paradise. Not by the sea but covered in sand. There’s water though… An oasis perched among imposing, steep and curvy sand dunes is what you find here. Is on the Peruvian 50 soles note for a reason. Postcard perfect and like something from a mirage, it would be easy to ... read more

To me, Ica sounds like something you don't like. Why would I want to go to a place I've never heard of, doesn't roll off the tongue, and with only three letters is much too small to merit a visit? Besides, isn't Peru all about the mountains? the pan-flutes and alpaca hats? Perhaps. But the region of Ica in Peru has much more to offer if you dare to give it a go. During my travels here, I have heard many foreigners and locals both talking about Ica and Paracas with awe and wonder. But being familiar with only the more well-known parts of Peru, I couldn't figure out why this place seemed so special to so many people. It didn't take long to find out. I booked a ticket with the premier bus company, Cruz ... read more

We had an early one as our last night in Arequipa and the following day Charlie went to have a look at the monastery while George wallowed in the Wild Rover TV room (admittedly quite an enticing place). We then grabbed some food and hopped on a bus to Cusco. Immediately after arriving at the bus terminal we set about looking for a bus to Santa Teresa, a more arduous route to Machu Picchu than than the train but at about a fifth of the price. We ended going with an all-inclusive tour and hurriedly packed our stuff before hopping in the cramped minibus for five and a half hours to a hydroelectric plant beyond Santa Teresa. From there it was a two hour walk along the train tracks to Aguas Calientes, the town at the ... read more

We met our group last night and some of us went out for dinner in Central Lima and had Ceviche which is one of the popular dishes - raw fish marinated in lemon juice to cure it with coriander, raw red onions and chili . It was really good.... The group is as expected, mainly youngsters -college or pre university ages. Still getting to know their names. They seem a nice bunch. Only one lad from the UK, a slighly older girl from Scotland and the others Australian, Dutch, American and Danish and an Egyptian gentleman of 60 so we are not the oldest. Tour leaders are two men, Dave an ex electrician born in the UK but has lived in Australia since very young and Ivan from Besançon in France. They are both as brown ... read more

Huacachina is a very small village (you can't really call it a town) about five minutes outside of Ica, south of Peru along the coastline. We took a 12 hour nightbus from Arequipa to Ica. If you are going on a long, overnight trip through Peru, I recommend Cruz del Sur. However, bring a pair of noise cancelling headphones if you want to sleep fairly early on the bus because they will have a movie and/or music blasting for a good two to three hours. It was very annoying. But, we made it to Ica in good time. The bus wasn't overly uncomfortable, though being tall worked against me. It was difficult to find the comfortable position, but I think I did get a few hours of sleep. From Ica, we took a taxi to Huacachina ... read more

I was woken this morning by the chatter from the menagerie of birds that were kept at the hostel. I had had a great nights sleep, considering the bed felt like it was made out of reinforced cardboard, mainly because I had the entire six bed dorm to myself. I was surprised to see so many people when I went down for breakfast, considering my dorm had been empty. I was greeted by the dear little lady who had checked me in yesterday, and offered scrambled eggs which I took gladly. I had heaps of time before I had to catch the coach to Ica, so I had a very leisurely breakfast. I had so much time in fact that I had long enough to find somewhere in the sleepy town of Nasca to Skype Tina ... read more

From Punto Hermosa (surfing) I headed down South to Paracas, where you find Isla Ballistas (the poor man’s Galypolys), it is a tiny tiny town, with not much more than a row of hostels and a full two minimarkets. Being an absolute cheapskate, I influenced Taylor, a Canadian girl I met in Paracas, to not take a tour for R90 for the day to the National Park, no we’d rather walk the 11km’s to the first lookout. 11km, a breeze right? Here’s the truth, it’s desert, it’s probably 35 degrees, there is nothing, nothing, but sand. We started out fine, after roughly 20minutes, we realized this was a bad idea, there is zero scenery. We decided hitch-hiking through the Peruvian desert is a way better idea! First we were picked up by this Italian guy with ... read more

Hey all, I´ve got some time ony my hands (more on why later) so i thought i´d set up a travel blog. One important note before i start... My typos are commonplace in general, but expect more while i´m using this SA style keyboard.... Anyway.... Days 1-3. Travelling Galore: People say there something excting about waiting to travel, the little checks that you do to make sure you have everything, the constant reading and the research you´ve done coming to mind as you go over the trip in your head. Airports too, can be seen as charming places, with everyone there slightly happier than normal before going on their trips away. However, people talk a lot of shite. There is nothing charming about airports, and there´s nothing exciting about waiting to go, while you´ve got the ... read more

Tina Writes We had allowed for two days of recovery in Cusco before moving on. As we were now in a $50 a night hotel, recovery was fast. A good bed and shower make a world of difference. We both went for a massage, this time paying a little more for better quality and hot stones, it was fantastic! Then straight to, you guessed it, Maccy D’s. Ahhhhhhhh. We later met up with two of the people we met on the trail, Mitesh and Deepa. We had got on really well on the trek, plus the fact that Deepa’s pace was similar to mine and Mitesh being a good friend and staying with her, just like Rob had for me. We all went for a drink in the world’s highest Irish pub, swapped emails and went ... read more
