30th April ’13 Huacachina Visited the café down the road for breakfast and ended up waiting an hour to get scrambled eggs, juice and tea! There were only 2 other people in there as well. Anyway that out the way we crossed the road to the Peru Bus station and bought tickets for Ica. No sooner bought than we were off, with us the only westerners on board again. Once more a dubbed in spanish nice gory war film to set the mood. After a short 3 hour ride we pulled into Ica – a large sprawling city with chaotic traffic (apparently we arrived just as school was finishing and this was the reason?!). After buying tommorow’s bus tickets we took a taxi from just outside to the ‘desert oasis’ of Huacachina. Although only 15 minutes ... read more

07/04 to 09/04/13: Huacachina: The Oasis in the desert near Ica. Huacachina is a village in the Ica Region, in southwestern Peru. It is located in the Ica Province, near the city of Ica in the Ica District. The oasis features on the back of the 50 Nuevo Sol note. Huacachina is built around a small natural lake in the desert. Called the "oasis of America," it serves as a resort for local families from the nearby city of Ica, and increasingly as an attraction for tourists drawn by the sports of sandboarding and taking dune buggy rides on sand dunes that stretch several hundred feet high (we didn't do it). Legend holds that the lagoon was created when a beautiful native princess was apprehended at her bath by a young hunter. She fled, leaving the ... read more

Leslie and Tiffany have joined me in Lima since the 5th of February...and I can tell you...it's been a lot of fun the last few days. The school summer holidays are soon over in Buenos Aires. Time to go back to a "normal" life...school and re-settling in our flat for the next four months, and the first part of a new school year. But before that, we still have two weeks of fun in Peru...and this is the first entry of a serie of four of them. We first spent few days in Lima...but as we did two short stays in Lima...that entry will come second. It must have been close to my twentieth visit to Peru....but this one is the one, as it is a first for Leslie and Tiffany! We spent our week-end, aka ... read more

Ica and Huacachina We sadly left Cusco and made our way on an over night bus at 17.30 which followed the winding road through the Andes down from 3500 Mts to the coast. As we slept in our seats we were rolled from side to side which caused us to giggle as the bus followed the hare pin bends down through the mountains. After a long but interesting journey down through mountains and along some stunning coastline we passed the town Nazca which have the famous mysterious Nazca lines, a number of animal and geometric shapes drawn across 500 km of bleak stony ground, unfortunately as we drove through the area we did not see anything. At last we eventually arrived at Ica 11.30 the following day. Ica lies 50km inland in a very fertile valley ... read more

Uur en ' half later en ons is in Ica. Baie groter as wat ons gedink het. Die locals ry soos maniacs. Klein mototaxis challnege sommer die groot busse! Sonder enige ongelukke.

Once you head away from the coast the landscape instantly becomes desert, every which way you look is sand, rolling dunes, sand as far as the eye can see and then you get to the town of Huacachina - known as the oasis of the America and more reminiscent of the Sahara than South America -the town is built up around a lagoon surrounded by palm trees, surrounded by desert. The stop in Huacachina was only brief, long enough for a quick wander around and a beer in the afternoon sunshine, as it was the dunes that we’d come to play in, climbing aboard 9 seat buggies we screeched off up over the dunes for an exhilarating ride, more roller coaster than driving, the driver tackling the ups and the downs at one speed only – ... read more

Wi... read more

08/18/12 We took a fairly comfortable bus ride to ICA. We had the comforts of AC, Wi Fi, movies, all while taking in the sites of the desert and their accompanying slums. Immediately, we took a cab over to a Huacachina, which is an oasis amidst the sand dunes. We were pretty tired so we just walked around the oasis, found a place that had good garbanzo bean burgers, drank some beers in the evening at the top of the dunes, and then made party with some solid people we met from the UK. The following day we hiked up to the top of one the biggest dunes surrounding the area which, from below, looked like an easy feat, but the fact that it was sand definitely made it a bit more strenuous. Afterwards, the pool ... read more

Leanne and I landed in Chile a couple of weekks ago. We didnt spend as much time in chile as it was a bit more expensive that peru and bolivia. We mad three stops in chile. The first one in santiago, then San Pedro de Atacama and the last stop was in Arica. Santiago was a strange city, full of graffiti and random pot holes. I dont think there was anything much to see there but as i only stayed a couple of days there then i may be making a sweeping generalization. Sab Pedro de Atacama is a must. We stayed in Hostel de Rural, i recommend staying here to anyone who visits San Pedro de Atacama. It is such a pretty little place in the middle of nowhere. We did the space star tours and ... read more

Day 283 Friday 20th July Still no WiFi in the morning but at least our breakfast was good. On our return to the room we had to get stuck into our packing which as you would after 9 months we are fairly quick at. I am still amazed though how we seem to collect all our belongings which are scattered all over the room and get it all back into our packs and walk out the door with it on our backs. We checked out at 9am and walked straight into the arms of a taxi driver, which of course we had to negotiate our ride to the bus terminal. We got him down from 20 Sol to 15 Sol ($6), which I think is about 3 sol too much but in the end we really ... read more
