Soo it´s truly started! We´ve rolled down a Peruvian highway, had some Pisco sours, seen some penguins and bumped across the desert in a sand buggy! Now i´m supposed to tell you how we were squeezed into the corner of a bus full of drug barons, fought of ten of them to reclaim our bags and then walked 20 miles across a desert until we found the lagoon we´re now in. Equally, the sours should of given us food poisoning, the penguins turned out to be partial to man flesh and the buggy have disintegrated whilst the driver tried to jump over his mate´s car. Thankfully, we´re just not that interesting! The trip started with the low budget backpackers option of a night in Heathrow. In order to hold interest, we decided to camp out in ... read more

Rocking into Huacachina, the name given to the only oasis in South America, is like arriving in a mirage. Suddenly the grubby looking city of Ica disappeared around the road and sand appears. As the final buildings are passed they are replaced in the distance by mountains of sand and once the windy road has passed a couple of kilometres in an area surrounded by overpowerering dunes, they break and a village appears and breaks in these building reveal the gorgeous little oasis in the middle. I wandered the lake with my gear before checking into a hostel and booking myself onto a 4pm trip. This trip was one that I had looked forward to from the minute that I heard of it and I was not disappointed. Promptly at 4pm my transport arrived at the ... read more

I can't believe I have been here for a month!! Time is flying especially now that classes are in full swing. It's crazy to think that most schools in the United States are just beginning. Classes here are pretty difficult for me, I am getting a lot better at understanding what my teachers are saying but it still takes a lot of effort to then put their words into concepts I can understand and get something out of. My literature class is giving me a run for my money, it's tons of reading and it takes me a lot longer to read because I need to look up words to make sure I know what I'm reading. I know going through all of this will pay off in the long run, though. And some of the ... read more

Yesterday morning I woke up packed my things and headed out the door to get a taxi to the bus station, after being ripped off by a whole tenner I had my wits about me this time, Id spoken to a guy in the hostal who said dont pay more than 10 soles so before i got in to taxi I said bus terminal for buses to ica si... si he said. Nice one, now I go to negotiate the price I held up 10 fingers and said 10 soles... ok he said. So we got to the bus station and I give him 20 soles... he looks at me gone out and says he wants 150... i told him to piss right off and we finally agreed on 50 which meant i got ripped of ... read more

We left Cusco on Tuesday night and headed to Ica. We had heard good things about the sandboarding and wanted to give it a go. By complete coincidence the 3 girls, Rachael, Fiona and Heather from Newcastle, that were working in Cusco, arrived at Ica on the same day! We stayed in a place called Huacachina, which is like an oasis in the middle of the dessert, sooo cool! Our hostel was grand, clean pool and private room with private bathroom, quite the job. The girls stayed in a slightly nicer hotel next to us so we ended up using their pool quite a bit! There was also a parrot there which climbed down from the tree and onto Eoghan while we sitting by the pool! We booked ourselves in for sandboarding and sandbuggying that day ... read more

Day 4: We joined our tour group on the morning of the 16th July after flying in from Brazil the night before. Only 9 people on the tour (so far) led by Alvaro, our tour leader. There are a mixture of English, Scottish, Swiss and Canadian, but unfortunately we are the oldest! The first day of the tour was mainly spent travelling down to Paracas, a port town south of Lima. We passed Pisco on the way, which was devastated by an Earthquake in 2007 - the place still hasn't recovered. Paracas has a population of 500, so pretty quiet, but has a beautiful promenade. Here we tried cerviche and our first Pisco sour (very nice!). Day 5: A brilliant day. We started early and went to the Ballestas Islands by boat. On the way we ... read more

I left Pisco early yesterday morning. I say early, it was about 9am. After another collective taxi (although I wasn´t put in the boot this time) and a wait at the side of the road, I was on my way to Ica. I only wanted to go to Ica to stop at Huacacina (pron. Wakka-china), an oasis in the desert I had heard about. Photos here: Probably one of my favorite places I have ever visited. I will try and upload some photo´s soon, because it is just amazing. Wall to wall blue sky, 100m sand dunes surrounding a tiny oasis, with about 100 inhabitants and 50 tourists. Just being at an oasis has been a huge novelty though - and all the people here have been great! There was even a cafe with bannoffee pie ... read more

Spent this morning admiring the wildlife on the Ballestas Islands and this afternoon sandboarding on the dunes of Huacachina. Scary as hell at first but very fun. More practise needed tomorrow. Met Italians,Portugeuse, English, Dutch and Spanish. They would put you to shame. Speak at least 3 different languages each.... read more

We left Lima by bus to head for Ica. Carlos, our trusty taxi driver, picked us up early in the morning to fight through the crazy traffic. Driving here is pretty similar to China, sometimes its best not to watch. We were almost late so Carlos sprung out of his cab and started to ask people in Spanish which gate we needed to be at, we raced over there and were on our way! Ica was only a four hour bus ride away, we passed through many towns that I can’t say I saw recommended to stop at by the Lonely Planet.... once we arrived at Ica, we grabbed a taxi to Huacachina. We knew Huacachina was going to be quite different from Lima, population of 200 vs. ~9 million. I think it’s safe to guess ... read more

We are now in Ica, waiting for our overnight bus to Aeriquipa. There's a slight delay and we pass the time watching a Peruvian soap opera which seems to go on for hours. We stayed in the small oasis of Huacachina, in the desert. It looks very pretty but the water stinks. The hotel is really nice with a pool which I found too too cold to swim in. We were enjoying the lounges near the pool, reading under a shady tree when from above I was greeted with Hello. A couple of parrots wander around repeating this over and over. They also know the Spanish form Hola (pronounced Ola). Everyone is very friendly and last night after our dune buggy ride and sand boarding we were packed into a small car with 4 others and ... read more
