Baggage today had to be all sorted for the Inca trail as everything would be left in Cusco for storage. I pretty much have no idea what my bag weighs as one scale came up right on 2.5 and another scale 4 kg. I'm going to hope and pray the first reading is correct. Andreas and Joel took us on private G Adventure bus on the full day sacred valley tour. We stopped first at a look out on the way to the White Jesus statue then again at the White Jesus for great views over the city. Our second stop was a G Adventures project where ladies made textiles. It's incredible the things they made and you knew who you were buying gifts off and that it was genuine alpaca wool. We were given some ... read more

Our tour guide, Rive, has managed to get us a large comfy G Adventures bus to take us to Ollantaytambo via the Scared Valley. This is such a relive, as minibuses are never fun for someone who is nearly 6 foot 2! We first stop at the Statue of Christ, this statue overlooks the city of Cusco and offers great views. The views are probably a 100 times better since the sun is blazing and the sky is blue, but the air is slightly cold. I've got my shades out and I am wearing shorts, a top and fleece. What a great look... I just can't decide if I am hot or cold? must be the high altitude that makes it that bit cooler. Next we stop at a small village called Ccaccaccollo. Here G Adventures ... read more

Ollantaytambo is a fortress at the confluence of two rivers in the Sacred Valley of the Incas to the northwest of Cusco. It took us about an hour and a half one to travel there by minibus, making our way through the uncontrolled housing development on the outskirts of Cusco and then climbing over a pass with views of the Andes. On the way we stopped and Chinchero, the site of three Inca palaces. This small Andean village is high up on the plain of Anta at 3762 m above sea level. We were given a demonstration of dying wool with local natural materials, spinning it and weaving cloth. Ollantaytambo is the best surviving example of Inca city planning with the modern buildings using the foundations of their Inca predecessors. The site has the most amazing ... read more

Last night/this morning we had to pack enough stuff to take us through the next two days because we can only take a very small amount of luggage with us on Wednesday when we catch the train from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes. After breakfast we headed back upstairs to clean our teeth and pack our toilet bags. We literally set foot in the room when I was struck with a mild bout of TD. OMG, I have to be cooped up on a bus most of the day not knowing when the next toilet stop will be! Bernie had a similar problem the day we set off to visit Santa Fe Island in the Galápagos - although there was a toilet on the boat, unlike the bus which has no such amenity. He took a Travelan ... read more

Arguably the most famous of all the sights in the South America and often the biggest highlight of many a traveller's journey through the continent, Machu Picchu is one of the 'big ones'. The traditional way to get here is via the equally famous Inca Trail - a gruelling four day trek through the jungle and over the mountains. The idea of Machu Picchu being a lost city only recently rediscovered, of being a holy grail at the end of a long, hard journey - the idea is entrenched that Machu Picchu is a sight that needs to be earned. As such, you have to book the official Inca Trail months in advance and the cost to do it is an eye-watering US$600. Prohibited by cost and my lack of organisation, it wasn't my intention to ... read more

PERU...to play the flute under the condor's beak. The clouds brushed the black sky obscuring the stars...the stone jigsaw lined passageways a tad darker tonight...the golden heroine calling us to bay to the Incan peeping moon. "Come with us to the Inca fortress. Roberto is going to play the flute under the condor's beak. Come with us," Mirinda beckons. "But we are off to Machu Picchu at dawn." "Come with us," Roberto echoes. The others nodding...smiles of expectation. It's times like this we travel. It's times like this we are thankful we have no other plans. It's times like this we embrace the moment...our hearts taking over...serendipity blessing our paths. So a troop of us tramp the cobbled street...over the river and into a cornfield. "Do we need torches?" "Nah. It's more fun in the dark." ... read more

Another early morning! We were on the station by 7.55am to get the train to Ollantaytambo, a small town on the way back to Cuzco. This time we were using Inca rail but it wasn't a patch on the Peru rail we'd travelled up on. We were served with coffee but told to 'hang onto our cups' as the train carriage rocked viciously from side to side, still the great views though, When we reached Olantaytambo station we walked into the town for lunch and spent the afternoon exploring the ruins there. After Machu Picchu though nothing quite compares. We jumped on a collectivo back to Cuzco and then dragged our aching legs back up to San Blas to Dave and Claire's apartment where we collapsed on the bed exhausted. Claire had prepared a very welcoming ... read more

We had a full day today. The day started at 8:00 am with a weaving demonstration. The woman that led the demonstration was hilarious, if you just understood a smidge of Spanish. It was actually interesting how they weave the cloth by hand, using natural dyes and even natural soap (a tuber that grows in the Andes). At 9:00 AM we were on the road to our first stop, Urubamba. We stopped by the market to see how the locals go “grocery” shopping. The market had a wonderful assortment of meat, dried beans and grains, medicinal herbs, and produce. The smell was surprisingly nice, given the fact that there was every type of meat just there in the open air. That is a little gross, given American sensibilities, but I was assured that the climate of ... read more

This morning we headed out of Cuzco aboard a private G Adventures coach for a full day of sightseeing in the Sacred Valley. First stop of the day was the Cristo Blanco Statue. Similar to the Christ The Redeemer Statue in Rio, the Cristo Blanco Statue overlooks the city of Cuzco with it's arms extended at the sides. The statue was a gift from a group of Christian Palestinians seeking refuge in Cuzco. When they finally returned to their homeland, the status was created to show their gratitude to the city. There was nothing too special about the statue but the views below of the city were impressive. We continue driving towards the Sacred Valley and stopped in the small village of Ccaccaccollo. The main purpose of stopping here was to visit a women's weaving Co-op ... read more
