To be fair, neither my words nor my picutures will ever come close to capturing the beauty of Ollanta. Even as I experience it, I cannot grasp it. What follows is thus an endeavor in futility. These are my first impressions. Every morning I awake to the song of birds and the smell of a wood stove. Sun light beams through my window and beckens me to my feet. The balcony is aglow with early morning light. I stretch and hear the familiar sound of our neighbors radio. This morning, the rythym that could only be a Latino salsa fills the crisp morning air. A rooster anounces the begining of a new day. A humming bird seems to move to the salsa, weaving in and out of the flowers below me. The green mountains take on ... read more

I was woken up by my room mate Simon's alarm sounding at 6am this morning. We had spent at least an hour exchanging stories last night when I turned in, which meant getting up this morning was exceptionally hard work. Once we had showered we headed downstairs for breakfast and were greeted by Keith from our group, who also looked a little sleep deprived. For the first time in South America I was had been given the choice if something more than bread and jam for breakfast and I was rather excited. I piled my plate high with cold meats, cheeses and a couple of boiled eggs, much to peoples amazement. I wanted to enjoy my last breakfast in civilisation, and no one was going to stop me.Having eaten and packed what few belongings I needed ... read more

Driving through the Sacred Valley was awesome, unfortunately, the pictures cannot capture how beautiful it really is, and unfortunately for some of you, I tried to take a picture of each changing landscape...which you may be subjected to seeing at some point. :) My goat-like stomach has allowed me to try many of the local specialites, such as guinea pig (never had one as a pet, so I didnt have an issue with that,) lots of cerviche, tea de cocoa for the altitude. We got better view of Lima on the way back. Visited the El Mar restaurant, which was incredible! Then walked to the beach-cliffs. Getting to know my way around Miraflores shops, restaurants and bars. Happened by an art fair last night and I couldn't pass up a painting of Machu Picchu painted by ... read more

16.11.11 With our duffle bags packed which was a 3kg limit, which was a nightmare packing 4 days worth of hot and cold weather clothes. Sophie ended up having stuff in my bag and Patricks bag! As she insisted on taking half of the clothes she owned, we set off for ollantaytambo. We visted a small village on the way were they spinned and dyed llama and alpaca wool to make clothing, that they tried to sell us. It was intresting that they dyed the wool using natural things from the forest around them. We then arrived at ollantaytambo, which there was a very big inca ruin. This was said to be a resting place for the inca´s on there pilgramage from cusco to Machu Picchu. It was pretty impresive, there was farming terraces up the ... read more

Wednesday 14th September I was just thinking a few days ago how lucky we had been that neither of us had been the least bit affected by the food, hygiene or altitude challenges here - and then it hit me! Yesterday saw me laid up in my little ol' single bed (because Shane prefers twin rooms these days lol ) with a good dose of the squirts! Eeeww. Shane met a couple of nice blokes upstairs so he came back to check on me a few later and asked what I felt like for dinner. Now I wasnt feeling too bad at this stage, things had slowed down if you know what I mean, and I felt ok. So we shared a delicious pizza from across the road. Bad move, and this is why we find ourselves ... read more

Thursday From Cusco you pass into the Sacred Valley, the Inca's most beloved area. Cusco means navel, it was the centre of their world. The valley is often wide and flat with terraces built on the lower slopes and up the side valleys. It is now harvest time and the people are out in the fields helping each other bring in the harvest. We've only seen machinery up on the mountain heights where the fields are large and unterraced. We stopped Pisac for the markets and to see llamas and at Urubamba for lunch. In this are, the river is called Urubamba, but it changes it name many times before it empties into the Amazon. At Ollantaytambo (get you tongue around that one), Inca ruins climb up the steep hillsides and here we see the most ... read more

Tulimme kimppataksilla Ollantaytamboon. Takapenkilla oli lisaksemme perulainen, jonka kanssa riitti juttua koko ajan. Tama kyla on syvassa laaksossa. Kavimme ensin syomassa ja sitten katsomassa paikallisia raunioita. Kävin yksin vielä kiertämässä kylän vanhoilla kujilla. Söimme illalla paikassa, joka lahjoittaa tuottonsa hyväntekeväisyyteen.... read more

Yesterday in Cuzco, we had a fantastic breakfast at a restaurant called Jacks. I had muesli, yoghurt, strawberries and banana and Tom had eggs and bacon. Due to our short time to leave Cuzco we had a light breakfast in our Hotel Buena Vista – nowhere near as good as Jacks. We headed north and followed the Sacred Valley floor visiting various communities along the way. At one stop we had lunch which was a typical Peru menu – soup, chicken with vegies, rice and potato (Peru has 3000 different types of potatoes), and a jelly fruit. Drinks are juice and tea (including coco tea) or coffee. But today was a little different. Our guide Manny, organised a surprise for us. The hosts bought out a plate with their national, special meat on it – guinea ... read more

We left Ecuador on Thursday afternoon and spent a day and a half in Lima, Peru before catching a flight to Cusco, Peru and then a bus to Ollantaytambo. A couple of small observations about Ecuador. In Banos the local garbage truck drives around and plays music like it is a Mr Whippy Ice cream van. At the Quito Airport they don´t use sniffer dogs they actually use the customs staff to sniff your bags. True story. It happened to us. Ollantaytambo is a beautiful town. It is set in the Sacred Valley and is surrounded by huge mountains, a river that runs through the town and old Inca ruins which are over 500 years old. Our hotel is at the foot of a huge mountain and about 500 meters above our hotel are some Inca ... read more

Day 1--Journey to Huchuy Cosqo: We woke up at 6am to meet Jonathan in front of our hostel at 6:30. After meeting him, we drove to Ollantaytambo to pick up the family of 3: Bob, Trudy, and Zack, who would be joining us on the trek to Huchuy Cosqo. After this we drove another hour and a half to Patabamba where we began the trek. Patabamba was a small town with basic homes made of mud bricks--one of the porters let me use his bathroom in town, which ended up just being a hole in the ground with 2 foot prints to place your feet--hadn´t done that one in a while... The views of the Andes were instantly breathtaking and absolutely indescribable. The path was so remote that it wasn´t even a path at times. Every ... read more
