After a late night of dancing, we were thankful to have a free morning to sleep in as we weren't scheduled to leave Sighisoara until 1:00pm. We had a delicious buffet breakfast in the hotel dining room before venturing back up to the Old Town to explore in the morning daylight. Shea and I bundled up as the morning was blisteringly cold and made our way to do some morning exploring. We basically retraced the same steps we took last night during our walking tour but this time with the advantage of daylight. During last night's tour, we missed just how colorful the Old Town is. Along every street that we walked on, the structures were painted various shades of blue, green, yellow, and orange. We passed small outdoor cafes with inviting terraces which would have ... read more

The city of Sibiu is known for being Romania's cultural gem with it's maze of cobblestoned streets and small yet charming squares. After breakfast, those who were interested in a walking tour of Sibiu met up in the main square, Piata Mare. We started outside the old city walls where our guide provided us with some history as well as some current information about the city. We meandered around the cobblestoned streets and when we arrived at the Catedrala Sfanta Treime, we were given some time to go inside and have a look around. The inside of the church was breathtakingly beautiful and as I have with other Orthodox churches that we've visited on this trip, I was completely awestruck. It was crowded inside and I wish I could've taken a photo but there was a ... read more

It was still dark outside when our bus set out to begin our tour of Romania. The weather was cold and rainy as we headed west out of Bucharest. Hopefully this morning's weather wasn't a sign of bad weather to come. We were headed to Poenari Castle and thankfully by the time we had arrived a few hours later, the skies had cleared to reveal a cool and sunny October day. What remains of Poenari Castle is located at the top of a hill and we had to climb approximaely 1500 steps in order to get there. We all made our way up to the top and eventually it was Gabo, Margaret, and myself leading the pack. Once at the top, we were rewarded with fantastic views of the surrounding mountains whose trees have all dropped ... read more

We woke up this morning with a full day to explore the Romanian capital before meeting our G Adventures tour group tonight at 5:00pm. With this being our only day in Bucharest, we had to make the most of the day in order to see as much as we can. Waking up to sunny skies, it was perfect weather today to explore Bucharest. After another delicious buffet style breakfast at our hotel, we headed out and walked north along Calea Victoriei with the goal of getting to the National Village Museum. We walked by notable landmarks such as the National University Library, the Arts Collection Museum, and the George Enescu National Museum before locating a Starbucks for a short coffee break. Having now entered what must be a university area of the city, we were now ... read more

We were in Romania for almost 12 hours now and we were already heading out of the country, albeit for quick day tour into northern Bulgaria. Being this close to the border with Bulgaria, Shea and I decided that we should arrive a day before our tour started in order to tick off another country on our list. When our guide Alexander picked us up in the hotel lobby, we were under the impression that he would be taking us to meet up with the rest of our group for the day. I was surprised to learn that today's tour would consist of just us. A private tour of Bulgaria! Driving south from Bucharest towards the Bulgarian border, we made a quick stop to pick up some snacks and water, and also to use the restroom ... read more

Who goes to Romania? That's the first question that I would get when I told people that I would be visiting this country in October. I stumbled upon a tour with G Adventures that visits the highlights of Transylvania during the Halloween season and culminating with a Halloween party at Dracula's castle. I immediately was fascinated and booked a spot on the tour along with my friend Shea. On the afternoon of October 24th, we both headed to the airport to catch our flights to Europe. Shea would be travelling to Bucharest via London while I would be travelling on KLM with a 5 hour layover in Amsterdam. Arriving in Amsterdam's Schipol airport, getting through customs was a breeze. I had a five hour layover and instead of just hanging out at the airport, I decided ... read more

In order to avoid hiking during the hottest parts ofthe day, we had to wake up at 3:30am to ensure that we were on the trail by 4:30am. The night before, I had a bit of a panic attack while trying to sleep in my tent. My tent was still warm from the heat of the day which must have triggered my claustrophobia. Then my mind just wouldn't calm down. I started thinking about what would happen if I wasn't able to get any sleep. Would I be able to hike the 10 miles out without any sleep? What would happen if I wasn't physically able to hike out? All of this was racing through my mind and even a quick walk in the fresh air didn't seem to calm me down. Luckily for me, this ... read more

Sunday morning we all awoke in high spirits and ready to enjoy all last full day in this desert paradise. Today's plan was to all hike together to some nearby waterfalls in order to enjoy the cool and refreshing waters. After two days of hiking and and tomorrow's tough hike out, we were all excited for today's relatively easy day. Alexei and Jeff first took us over to Fifty Foot Falls, an absolutely gorgeous waterfall that seems straight out of a tropical island paradise. The plan was to spend 1-2 hours just relaxing, swimming, and enjoying the beauty of the surrounding area. The water was cold but felt quite good as the morning slowly heated up. Eventually, we all got in and slowly swam closer to the waterfall. The force of the watefall combined with the ... read more

I don't remember the last time I had gone to bed as early as I did last night. After such a long and strenuous day, it was much needed. We all awoke on Saturday morning fully energized after a much deserved good night's rest. After a delicious breakfast put together by Alexei and Jeff, we all put on our bathing suits and hiking shoes and filled our day packs with water for a full day of exploring. Our group would separate into two groups. Those of us who chose to do the longer more strenuous hike all the way to Beaver Falls would go with Jeff. Alexei would lead the other half of the group down to Mooney Falls and spend more time relaxing and swimming in the various swimming holes. Of course, the group split ... read more

For the longest time I have always wanted to visit Havasu Falls. It's turquoise blue waters just seemed like such a magical place to be. That and all the Instagram photos that I have seen has put this place on my bucket list. It's not an easy destination to get to which definitely adds to the allure. A permit is needed to visit as the falls are located within the Havasupai Indian Reservation. A permit here is not as simple as going on-line to obtain them. You have to call one of five different phone numbers and hope and pray that somebody picks up. I have been doing this for years with no success. If you happen to miraculously secure a permit, getting to the desitination is no simple matter. The nearest city is Flagstaff, Arizona ... read more
