We spent couple days in a village of Paracas. There was a nice seafront full of sidewalk restaurants and vendors. Most of the days we were chilling on a beach... One day we made a trip to Reserva Nacional de Paracas. It's a desert-filled national reserve where you can visit some very nice beaches. The nicest was Playa de Roja - red sand on the beach was incredible and made cool impression next to blue water. Following day we visited Islas Balletas. We spent some time cruising around the island's arches watching noisy sea lions sprawl on the rocks. Smell was unbearable but still so worth to see it! There was a small beach where only baby sea lions were playing. So cute! We took hostels owner advice and before heading to Cuzco we went first ... read more

Anyone who follows me on twitter will have seen a serious amount of travelling was done Wednesday and Thursday! We flew with Delta airlines who were pretty good in fairness, they kept us feed and also offer a good range of in flight entertainment. Mahone had been telling me what a good TV series House of Cards was and thankfully this proved to be one of the rare occasions where he was right - I watched the first 5 episodes and Mags got in 6. Basically no sleep was gotten for the 48 hours bar the odd nap as airplanes and airport floors can be pretty uncomfortable (First time sleeping on an airport floor!) We had a slight problem getting our Peruvian visa (by slight I mean getting stopped at customs for 1.5 hrs) I dont ... read more

On day 11 we had a free day to explore Cusco. I'm currently writing this a few days later though so might forget a few things. From what I remember we got up moderately early and saw the main square, some more beautiful churches and we went to a few museums. One museum was about the history of the Incas with a few pieces of art, sculptures and pottery. But the second museum was my favourite: A chocolate museum!!! We learnt about the coco plants and how the chocolate was made. Then we got to try multiple types of chocolate and we had a make-it-yourself hot chocolate and chocolate bread thing. It was delicious!!! Then we went shopping and had dinner with everyone. The next day we had no idea what we were really doing as ... read more

Today was our last day in Cusco. As I write, we are back in the capital city, Lima, for a quick overnight stop. This morning we had a few hours left for a little more tourism so we walked to the Coricancha in Cusco. This is a church and convent built by the Spanish right on top of a very important Incan sun temple. The Spanish apparently realized that the Incan stone foundations were extremely good and they liked the message of domination that went with building on top of the temple too. The convent covered up most of the Incan foundations until a massive earthquake in 1950 led to parts of the newer building crumbling away to reveal the Incan stones. The contrast between the Incan and colonial masonry is now very striking. From there ... read more

They were waiting on the steps of the cathedral. All fifteen of them. Temporary wall-flowers, waiting for their turn to waltz. Adorned in fine fabrics, shot through with gold thread, capped with crowns and canopies, surrounded by fresh flowers, and outlined against a sky-blue heaven. Each surrounded by his own musicians, dancers, dignitaries and followers. Spectators milled about. Some rested on the cathedral steps, others lined the edge of the plaza, sitting on the kerb and makeshift stools. They shaded their eyes from the sun holding broad-rimmed hats at the side of their faces; delved into large plastic shopping bags for snacks and drinks, and chatted to friends and family. Vendors sold paper hats, plastic rosaries, 'spot the saint' booklets, cakes, bubble-kits, balloons, soft-drinks and plastic stools. Young girls in heavily embroidered skirts and fringed hats ... read more

Today has definitely been museum day. We covered a total of six: Museum of Pre-Colombian Art; Museum of the Incas; Museum of Popular Art; Museum of Contemporary Art; Museum of Chocolate and finally the Museum of Machu Picchu. Museums are generally not the kids' favorite things but they tolerated it well and might have even enjoyed some. The inclusion of the Chocolate Museum and a few mummies and skulls kept them interested. And perhaps the complete lack of stones was a welcome change. We've had two travel guidebooks with us for the trip, Fodor's and Moon. Both have been really helpful in finding the best sights and planning our days. And they've also been great for finding places to eat. Fodor's led us to Pizza Carlo for lunch today. A tiny restaurant with about 15-20 seats, ... read more

Stones. That's what the kids have decided Peru is about. Much like last year they decided Asia was all about temples, Peru is all about stones, stones and more stones. Mostly big stones, stacked tightly together by the Incans to form walls, terraces, temples, houses and forts. Those Incans were very talented at stacking stones. So this morning we wanted to keep the theme alive and we jumped in a cab to drive out to the hills outside Cusco to see the Incan ruins at Sacsayhuaman. This fortress (known by tourists by its pronounciation, sexy woman) was the scene of a big old fight with the Spanish in 1536 which ended with many Incans throwing themselves out of the high tower rather than be taken alive. Things are a lot more peaceful up there now, but ... read more

This morning we got up early and visited the Sillustani ruins which has many large towers made by the Incas to offer sacrifices in. It is surrounded by a beautiful lake with magnificent views, it is an amazing place and they still don't know how the Incas got all of the stones up to the top of the hill to make these sacrificing towers. From there we headed to Cusco where we spent most of our day travelling on the truck. There were some amazing views that we got to see on the way which you will see in the photos I put up. On our trip we are constantly getting mocked by the Auzzies and Brits on the trip due to our 'funny accent'. We told them they have it all wrong and that our ... read more
