Hello People, Morning; We tried to have a lie in this morning, but some inconsiderate people in the dorm were making continuous noise for ages before 6am grrrrr. After queuing for the shower, we went for our free breakfast in the hostel (just jam, bread and juice but it was free. We didn’t have to check out until noon, so we hung around a bit, repacking our bags ready for the trip and using the Wi-Fi. The hostel tried to charge us double the price when we checked out, but luckily we had the receipt from booking.com to prove how much we had to pay. Once we checked out of this hostel we moved just one block down the road to ‘Prisma Hotel’ where our STA travel tour is starting today at 16.30. We are staying ... read more

Hey People, After a bit of a lie in, we were both feeling a little better, the head-ache was gone but still short on breath if I climbed the stairs or the ladder on to the top bunk-I feel very unfit! The free breakfast was just bread and jam so Neil got some scrambled eggs to have as well, which he shared with me!!! This morning we followed the Lonely Planet city tour, which was about 4km around all the main sites, markets and little alleys. There are great craft shops with the colourful blankets, bags, hair bobbles-any accessory but with gorgeous multiple coloured patterns. I really wanted a huge blanket for £12, which is so cheap, but it is just carrying it. I will get one before I go but am going to wait until ... read more

Hi all, After a 14-hour night bus from Nazca, we finally arrived in Cusco. When we woke up about 7am we could feel the difference in altitude-horrible! Headache, slight shortness of breath, to go with the achiness of being on a bus that long wasn’t the best feeling!! We received a free toasty on the bus but I couldn’t stomach anything. When the bus arrived at 11.30am we negotiated a taxi price to our hostel (we already knew the going rate so we started a bit lower anyway-in Spanish I might add J). Unfortunately when we arrived at the hostel we had to wait another 2 hours before we could check in and shower. We were both feeling light headed and just wanted to stretch out and sleep on a bed. After waiting we got in ... read more

After the charms of La Paz it took me a little while to warm up to Cusco, but after a day or so of wandering through the town, past the hordes of tourists and up the hill to the quieter narrow cobbled laneways I began to see what all the fuss was about. The second largest city in Peru, the old town is set around the large picturesque Plaza de Armas, a beautiful big square where it is easy to sit in the sunshine and people watch. On one side is the Cathedral, quite an imposing building from the outside but inside includes two small chapels either side of a beautiful Cathedral. It is really quite stunning with beautiful paintings and ornate carvings. On the other side of the square is the equally impressive Iglesia de ... read more

Sarah: (WARNING: contains material that some readers may find unpleasant). Just a quick update on the events since the last blog post. We had a good afternoon in La Paz on Sunday, replenishing our energy levels in anticipation of our Amazon trip on Wednesday morning. I got a photo of the dried llama foetuses that are sold in the witches markets. As I mentioned before, these are bought for good luck and are said to come from failed llama pregnancies. Since writing, Nick has highlighted my naivety and pointed out that it is highly unlikely that all these foetuses are from failed pregnancies... I'm sorry to agree that he's probably right. We grabbed some dinner in the Dutch restaurant that we had been to previously and couldn't resist the meatball, cheese and pickle sharing platter again! ... read more

We flew from Santiago to Lima and Lima To Cusco. We took a taxie to our budget hotel called The Net House. The hotel room with private bath and breakfast included was $35.00 US. The hotel is in the historic part of Cusco, you should only stay in the historic center so you can walk to all the sites. We like Cusco with it cobbled streets and the people selling food on the sidewalk. You can see many women carrying babies, laundry or flowers in blankets on their backs. The people are very religious and we witnessed several religious parades where people carry statues of Jesus through the streets. One of the parades was so large it was on TV and it took six hours for it to wind through the streets. The large plazas have ... read more

We just arrived in Cusco....the Capital of the Inkan Empire and continent's oldest continuously inhabited city. We are here for a few weeks to explore the Sacred Valley, and go to Machu Picchu. We are staying in this wonderful part of the city called San Blas. It's lovely. We found our 2 favourite restaurant: Taco Mania - amazing mexican food The Meeting Place ( the best avocado/tomato sandwich and choc milk shakes :) - it's run strictly on volunteers so there are many characters from all over the world, volunteering there time and improving their Spanish. We quickly made friends and had a blast chatting with all the wonderful people. Before arriving we had planned to take a week of spanish lessons....we had a fantastic experience do to the most wonderful/patient teacher Glady's at The San ... read more

Hello again TravelBlog readers! It's been over a year since my last entry in London and quite a bit has changed since then. I'm a first year medical student at Southern Illinois University, I have the world's most adorable dog (see Facebook pictures for evidence), and I'm currently in Peru with two of my medical school classmates, Zach and Travis, on spring break! We left Chicago O'Hare early Saturday afternoon and the excitement started before we even checked our bags. Those of you familiar with the "Nazarene Network" know that is difficult to go anywhere in this world without running into Nazarenes that you know. It just so happened that we were sharing our first flight to El Salvador with a team from Olivet Nazarene University that is on a mission trip to Honduras. I had ... read more
