We met our tour guides (Eduardo, Ruben & Mario) early in the morning and bundled into the minibus. The journey was mainly through winding dirt track up and over the peaks to reach the part of the river we would begin our rapid adventure! After gearing up and having a spot of lunch by the river, Ruben, our captain, taught us all the commands he would be using, then we were off. Having never rafted properly before i was quite nervous but excited at the same time, the adrenaline was definitely flowing. Ruben took us through Class 3 rapids to get us all settled in then we set up camp just in time before the rains started. Despite the rain we gathered firewood /trees and made a great campfire. Dinner was steak and mash potato..... on ... read more

Headed off for a two day kayaking experience on the Apurimac. The river is about two hours away from Cusco in the worlds third largest canyon. Apparently canyons are big here. It was a group of three, two Israeli´s, one of whom used to work in Charlotte so it was a nice small world connection. The first hour or so we practiced paddling and how to escape should we capsize. Then we headed down the river in mostly class one and two rapids with a three sprinkled in there. I busted once and nearly slammed straight into a rock at one point. That afternoon at the hostel we practiced flips in the thermal baths and then fixed dinner and hit the bed fo a 7 am wake up call. The next day we practiced rolls again ... read more

We arrived in Arequipa from Lima on Friday morning, around 10:30. We took the economical bus, which was the wrong choice. Cruz del Sur has three levels of comfort : luxury, ideal and economical. We opted for the cheapest and were rewarded with a 16 hour bus ride with no bathroom. We did stop one time around 2 am at some random little Pervuian bus stop with bathrooms and what appeared to be a dog kennel. With around 3 hours left in the trip vendors were allowed on to sell completely random products. I had no problem with them peddling the buses for cash but the volume with which they yelled at us was offensive. The take home story is this: when traveling long distances via Cruz del Sur, don´t go economical. Ok, so dispite the ... read more

So to continue on our journey through Peru, we left Lima and went on our way to Huancayo, in the Central Highlands. ARGH! We're stuck! We've managed to get about 300 miles (as the crow flies, but the roads aren't exactly straight around these parts!) in the last 9 days since we left Lima. The trip to Huancayo was fair enough, but every leg from there on through the central highlands of the Peruvian Andes has been a bit of an experience. Today we find ourselves kicked off our bus in a tiny town called Abancay, with nothing to do but look out at the daily downpour and write another blog. Apparently our onward bus to Cuzco was overbooked, and as we didn't have actual paper tickets, we lost out. Next available bus... 6am mañana. The ... read more

Jaime SA May 12-13 Well I learned that my second bus ride was much longer due to not ONLY unpaved roads, but really small, single lane windy roads that go through the mountain. Sometimes I couldn´t even see the the end of the road at my window because we were so close to the ledge! Very sharp turns, every time a car came the other way we had to stop, and sometimes back up as much as a quarter of a mile to find a spot wide enough for both of us to pass. Some turns were so sharp in the road that we couldn´t make the turn in one swoop, we had to actually stop, reverse, and go forward again. Sometimes I just closed my eyes because it was too scary to watch! Anyways I ... read more
