"Little by little, we ended up in this small Peruvian village, on the sides of the Amazone". The eve of our departure for Iquitos, we decided to stay a bit longer in this other world, the Amazonie. After asking at the pastor of ... read more

We flew from Cusco, Peru, to Iquitos, crossing the spine of the Andes. Iquitos, once a booming rubber town with many European immigrants, is isolated in a vast tract of jungle and can only be reached by air or water. It is the largest city in the Peruvian rain forest, has a popuation of 500,000. It is a cosmopolitan city with strong Amazonia roots. We saw some of it by bus and noticed a few old Colonial buildings left over from long ago. We are driven to the town of Nauta, about 60 miles away. We passed scenes of daily life in the jungle until we finally reached a small riverside town on the banks of the Maranon River and board the Delfin II. The Amazon River, in South America, is the largest river in the ... read more

And so we began our second major tour in South America, our Amazonia Expeditions tour; 7 nights in the Amazon jungle. It was a solid 3 hour boat ride from Iquitos to arrive at our lodge, which is based on the 2 million hectare Tahuayo Reserve, based on the Tahuayo River, a tributary of the Amazon River. It wasn’t quite the ‘motorised canoe’ we thought we were travelling in, it was simply a speedboat and for that we were grateful or else it would have taken double the time! The Reserve itself has registered over 600 species of birds, a dozen monkey species, caimans, snakes, spiders, butterflies and is also home to the puma, jaguar, giant ant eaters and anaconda. For our 7 nights in the reserve, we had our own personal guide, Weninger, who spent ... read more

The experience in the jungle will be yet another that we will never forget. If I'm honest I had a few sleepless nights doubting if we were doing the right thing by taking the kids on an authentic trip deep into the jungle. Arriving at the Iquitos airport we were greeted by our Amazon Explorer guide "Mardan" which was fantastic. He took us to our hostel and picked us up the next morning for our orientation. After the orientation I felt everyone's excitement and trepidation. This was it we were finally here! Our adventure started at 7am with an 1.5hrs. drive to Nauta where we were dropped off about a mile from the water, taking a motortaxi to our peka peka boat. We humped a small backpack each and helped carry our supplies for our 3day ... read more

Je quitte donc Mancora pour rejoindre la « Selva », la partie du Pérou dans la jungle amazonienne. Un long périple commence ! A peine arrivé à Tarapoto, j’enchaine directement par 2h ... read more

'It's just you and the creatures now', said Juan Carlos as he waved goodbye. The air was loaded with sound. We could see nothing, but knew that life was all around us. We were at the last outpost on the Yanayacu de Yacapana River, at the start of our Amazon Refuge adventure. Beyond lay only jungle and watery veins of the Amazon. We plunged right in. A three-hour forest walk. Dense vegetation, vines and huge trees intertwined, orchids growing on branches, fungus eating away at bark. There were no visible pathways and only decomposing vegetation underfoot; a soft mulch of leaves, mud and rotting wood; creepers tugging at feet and ankles. The ground felt spongy, flexible - odd - like it wouldn't hold our weight. Continuously looking down at my feet wasn't conducive to animal spotting, ... read more

“ It’s the strangest saddest city thou can’t see. For Lima has taken the white veil and there is an higher horror in this whiteness of her woe. “ Herman Melville author of Moby Dick Lima ! The city of Kings as called by the founding fathers . We checked in to Hotel Maury home of the Pisco Sour and found our tour mates. We took off to the city center and tourd the Lima cathedral and the Monastery Catacombs. With more tour mates we ventured to the Inquisition museum, a bust because we couldn’t find any translations of the exhibits or an English guide as advertised in the Lonely Planet . Having enough of sightseeing for the day we dipped into a little Italian café and had our 1st sampling of Peruvian beer Crystail. To ... read more
