After short 2hr flight from Lima we landed in Iquitos in Northern Peru. This is a unique city of over half million people which can only be reached by plane or river. It has a road connecting it with Nauta 70 km away by good road but all other roads are dirt tracks. Most transport is by tuctuc or m/c and the vast majority of houses are very basic wood and corrugated iron. The pop are mostly river / forest Indians who have moved to the city in search of education or a better life.. Having seen the native riverside villages, I think this was maybe a mistake for most, as the people who remain on the river appear to be very content with their lot. They do not use cash, but bring their produce to ... read more

Dear Dear friends, This journey so far is filled with wonder at the incredible profusion of life in the Amazon as well as immense poverty and rubbish. I am currently inTarapoto for a day before I go to Monte Ingles. Being away from the Amazon really gives me a good perspecitive about how intense it is there. Just imagine the huge amount of energy that is the jungle. the plants the animals the river. Now throw a large city in the middle of it and throw in corporate irresponsibility. Mototaxis. Poverty. Then consider there is no where to put the trash. Oh and add magic. viola, you have Iquitos. it is the place to learn about the healing practices of the Amazon jungle. There is too much to learn in a short trip like mine of course, ... read more

buenos dias Amigas, I sure am havig a good time integrating into this amazing area! Wild jungle adn deep poverty side by side. Claire is a wonderful hostess and guide and her beautiful home is the palace of the village. While there is no running water, outhouse and shower stall out back, and electricity for only four hours at night, the place is very comfortable. I have a mosquito net on my bed but so far they are practically non existant. When we had a torrential downpour yesterday morning we lit a fire in the maloka pit and were quite comfortable. no chimney, teh smoke is good for de-bugging teh thatch roof and it is so high the smoke dowes not get trapped. my bed is comfy ad Claire keeps a thermos of hot water so ... read more

Well, well, well, it's so wonderful so far! 6 hour flight from Dallas to Lima in a window seat with NO ONE IN THE MIDDLE SEAT, only wish I could've slept, she says as she is still standing at 4:30 am waiting fOr a 8am flight. My seat mate was a delightul woman, Annalee. Shegrew up in Lima and now lives in the DC area. Delightful folks in the airport, evennet three guys from Grand Junction and Carbondale. They each have a kayak to run rivers in the sacred vally.. Thing is, the counter people at Star Peru don't think they will fit on the plane! The airport cop on the beat where I have been hanging out since I arrived at midnight is keeping an eye out for me and being super helpful. Twice I ... read more

After three flights we arrived in Iquitos which is the largest city in the Amazon jungle and the largest city in the world which isn’t accessible by road. On the drive from the airport to our hotel we started to feel more like we were back in South East Asia rather than in Peru – we’d gone from approximately 5 degrees when we left Puno to about 28 degrees, high humidity and roads full of tuk-tuks! The following morning we were picked up by tuk-tuk at 9am and taken to the main Port of Iquitos. The port was actually just a set of uneven concrete stairs didn’t even reach the water (or boat) level so there was still a bit of a jump to get into our boat. We climbed on board with three Germans, one ... read more

We decided after Cusco to swiftly make our way North, back to the amazon, via a few days in Lima. Lima was a big city, with a frantic bus system, surrounded by quite depressing city outskirts and the centre felt more colonial than latin american. we managed to leave one rucksack there too (as we head back there to fly home) so were now travelling with much less stuff. Next stop Iquitos, the amazonian town with no roads leading to or from it; we flew in and left by boat. we spent several days here in the humid heat and tropical rains, its a big town built on the rubber industry, and has great views out to the amazon river. One of the most memorable parts of Iquitos is the Belen market, which was probably the ... read more
