Oh dear, I really have been rather rubbish at updating this blog haven't I? After various complaints from my mother I am forcing myself to update here again. Since the last time I blogged I have been to Asuncion a couple of times, been horrifically ill a couple of times, attended a Paraguayan baptism service, put up my christmas tree and as always been just too darn hot most of the time. The first time I went to Asuncion it was to go and pick up and pay for my plane ticket to Brazil for my christmas hols, at which time I found out that the people in the Paraguayan Embassy are either really stupid or really evil. I now dislike them a lot. If you remember my blog entry about the Epic Golden Tourist Visa ... read more

What did all my classmates do last night on their year abroads? Probably go to a bar and get drunk. What did I do last night on my year abroad? Looked after a 14 year a girl who's tried to commit suicide twice becuase her mum has abandoned her. You can't put into words all the emotions and thoughts. But it sure as hell puts this year into perspective.... read more

I am really very bad at this blogging malarkey. So much happens and I totally just forget it all and don't write it. I wanted a realy nice travel journal to write in for here, and I got one, but do I write in it nearly regularly enough... Of course not! *slaps wrists* Anyone who's ever watched Brainiac science abuse will be familiar with an enlightening experiment called "Things you can't do whilst being electrocuted" Well the other day I accidently managed to carry out my own version of this experient, and the answer is, for me anwyay, not a whole heck of a lot. I was in the midsts of plugging my laptop in at the wall when the boxy bit in the middle of the cable fell of the table, the sudden weight of ... read more

As an English person I am somewhat trained to hate the rain. I mean we certainly get more than our fair share of it. However here, in a city that hasn't seen rain in 5 months, where the air is so full of dust that the sun is bright red as it sets because you're seeing it through all that muck, were you can't see half way down the road in front of you because it looks all foggy, here, rain is good. Rain is very, very good. Yesterday it rained all day. And I mean all day. It was beautiful. Claire and I went out for a meal at lunchtime to celebrate the fact that it was raining, and then for a walk in the evening to enjoy it. The roads are so very much ... read more

But the old man is definitely not snoring as this is the first rain in Concepcion in about 5 months. The river is about half full, it's scary to look at. Lots of people, in the Chaco particularly, don't have food and water, the government is on the verge of declaring a national emergency. Annoyingly, it rains quite frequently in the capital Asuncion, but we're just that bit further north and so don't get it so often. Even though it rained today the country still needs a lot more, as it only rained for a few hours this morning, it's all sunny again now. I just looked at a weather website that says Concepcion is in the middle of a thunderstorm, which is just a complete lie! Last night was Bishop John and Judy's despedida. That's ... read more

I had the most wonderful day yesterday. I went to the capital city, Asuncion for a day. We got the bus at 4 on Sunday and arrived in the city about half 9. I went to stay with a lady called Elaine who I had met back in England at our training weekend. I did not realise beforehand but she is actualy living in quite possibly the nicest house in all of Paraguay! Okay no that's a total exageration, but it is an awful lot nicer than my house. Her lounge is about the size of our entire house here. It's a family house and she's living in it on her own at the moment, so that's why. It's got a massive lounge/dining room with air con, a downstairs toilet and a massive kitchen, with a ... read more

So I've been here a month now... Seriously how did that happen? I blinked and missed it or something! It feels like I've been here about a week. I can't decide if that's a good thing or a bad thing... Today I had my first attempt at teaching Zuny english. I think it went well. I taught her the alphabet and how to say hello and goodbye and introduce yourself. Tomorrow I'm going to teach her numbers and dates. Yesterday I had the most supremely lazy day, I stayed in my pyjamas aaaaaall day. I ate, I slept, and I chatted to my mummy, my sister and Laura. It was a goooooood day. Claire had to go to the capital again with little Romina, the girl who needs to go to the hospital quite a lot. ... read more

Bored of my blogs yet? hehe On monday I went to little Rebecca's school with her and her mum, Zunni, because she invited me. It was their last day of term and a their certificate giving day. It was soooooo cute. They did like little performances, one girl read some poetry she'd written which was really good actually! Another girl did a dance, which was soooo cute, and then some other kids did a little play about the seasons where one girl had the most amazing butterfly costume on, I wanted the wings from it. So that was really nice, and it was really nice spending time with Zunni, as she's really lovely and so patient with me and tries so hard to help me speak spanish, she's awesome. The rest of the week was much ... read more

After spending two days moaning to anyone who would listen about how I was seriously missing pizza, I finally decided to ask Claire if there was anywhere that sells pizza, turns out there is! So last night she showed me how to get there. This place is like the Paraguayan equivalent of Pizza Hut, the pizza was soooo good, and the best bit of all, my whole pizza cost £1! Yes that's right, £1! For a pizza!!! It was possibly the highlight of my time out here... Which is a little sad I know, but I really like pizza! Also, Claire says she knows a good recipe for making pizza, and she'll teach me sometime. Which means when I get back to uni, no more shelling out £10 for a Texas BBQ, I'll be able to ... read more

So I've been here two weeks now... How weird is that? The time has seriously just flown, I feel like I've only been here two days. On saturday it rained. I never thought as an English person I would be happy to see rain. But I was. It was glorious and wonderful. The temperature has since been 25 degrees C which has felt deliciously cold. I wore a jumper. I'm dreading when the temperature will go back up to the 40s. On saturday evening I went to Anna and Matt's farewell dinner. (They're the English people I met at the airport) There was a big group of, of all different nationalities English, Paraguayan and Belgian. It was good fun. Anna did a fire poi routine on the corner of the street by a statue and one ... read more
