For Carnival, Darren, Ian, Pierre, Emily and I decided to go to CANOA! Its an amazing beach in the Manabi province. We took a bus from Quito to San Vicente (8 hours) and from there got a ride in the back of a truck to Canoa (30 minutes), which is a little north of San Vicente. Canoa is, BY FAR, my favorite beach in Ecuador, mostly because everyone is so chilled out but also because the beach is gorgeous and big, there is a lot of beautiful sand and lets not forget the sweet ass rocky caves at the very end of the beach. Usually Canoa is very "tranquilo", BUT because it was Carnival everyone was at the beach, so Canoa was pretty packed. There were NO hostals, so we were forced to tent, which ... read more

It’s CARNIVAL!! In my head carnival was going to be a huge thing with dances and parades and enough craziness for all. Well, this notion mostly came from the pictures I’ve seen of Carnival in Rió de Janeiro and as I discovered, this is the place where Carnival DOES go wild. Since we had neither the money nor the time to go to Rió, we opted instead to follow seemingly all other Ecuadorians and go to the BEACH!! About 8 hours on the bus and 45 minutes in the back of a truck got us to Canoa, a beautiful little community on the Pacific. As it was Carnival and everyone and his dog seemed to be on the coast, there were no hostels to be had. Luckily, we planned ahead and brought some tents with ... read more

Today we are leaving our cozy beach front spanish school. It was a great place to get reaquainted with the spanish language. We still have lots to learn, and we do really intend to continue studying on our many long bus rides and down time. And of course every day we practice as we communicate our way around! We are now heading back inland to the mountains. We aren´t exactly sure where we will end up tonight. Not sure of the bus schedules yet, but our ultimate destination is a town called Baños. Yes, bathroom, but I believe it was named for the hot springs there. It is nestled around some active volcanoes. Possibly from there we will take a 60km bike ride down into the jungle (and a bus ride back up!). ... read more

Clases de Español are going great. Juan Carlos, our teacher, is great and very patient with us. We have been surfing every day between classes and the surf has been great. Malia´s longest rides ever! They are baby waves, but still very fun. Yesturday we (us, two canadians, and a dane) went on a canoe tour through Isla de Corezon. It´s a mangrove island containing the largest population of frigate birds on earth. They are the ones that puff up the red-balloon-like air sac on their chest to attract the ladies. What an awesome experience! The guide we hired, loaded us all up into his dug out canoe (made from one cedar log) and we headed across the bay/estuary toward the mangroves. Two people had to bail water the whole time to keep us from sinking. ... read more

well we made it to the coast. from 9, 000+ ft, to sea level it gets a lot warmer. probably atleast high 80´s to 90´s, and the sun is intense...we are already on our second bottle of sunblock and probably will buy another soon! We learned today from our friend Alex that we saw the Iranian president at the equator. when we were there last week there were a group of well dressed men speaking in a language none of us could recognize, so Alex asked them where they were from. Then a few days ago he saw on the news that the Iranian president was visiting Ecuador and was at the equator. So, at the same time the Iranian president, Peruvian models and us were all at the equator, that will never ever happen again! ... read more

After three days in Canoa and remembering our very long journey from Quito, we decided that a night bus from Bahia de Caracas would be nicer than the day bus we took to St. Vincente. Plus we heard that this town was an "ecocity" and we wanted to see what it was all about. We took a bus from Canoa to St. Vincente in the morning. We met a nice gentleman who helped us to catch the water taxi across the bay to Bahia. We spent the day walking around the peninsula and watching the amazing waves hitting the shore. We ate some great Italian food and ice cream. Kerensa ate cerviche and it was great also. The pelicans clumsily diving into the water kept us entertained for hours. Janel and Kerensa collected more sea shells. ... read more

We (Janel, Tony and Kerensa) went to Canoa for three days. We wanted a relaxing trip on the beach. Tony wanted to try surfing and he did. We thought the trip to Canoa would take 6 hours, but in actuality via St. Vincente it took over 10 hours. It was an uncomfortable bus and it was hot. Once we got to St. Vincente we took another 20 minute bus to Canoa where we were dropped off in what seemed the middle of no where. A very nice person could recognize we had no idea where to go and helped us find our hostel (only one block from the beach and $5 a person). The first day on the beach Kerensa and Janel collected shells. We had a deal that we would only keep 10 of the ... read more

The coast down here is pretty poor, everywhere you go there are whole areas being burnt in a spanish colonial technique, called slash and burn. Farmers clear the land by burning large pieces of land, which clears and gives some short term fertility fopr about a year. But after that the land is deemed pretty infertile, so farmers move onto the next piece of land...its all pretty heart breaking to see, as you know its not good for anyone in the long term. The absolutly fantastic people at Rio Muchacho see www.riomuchacho.com are trying to operate by example, an alternative to all this. Operating by example is not enough, so they are really trying to effect cultural change, by training up local people on the farm. But one of the best things they are doing is ... read more
