Well guys let me tell you of some of the issues that effect Ecuadorians. While we have been here, the national elections have been played out and one of the main contenders is a bloke called Alvora Noboa...he´s owns many of the Banana Plantations of Ecuador...banana´s being one of the main exports for Ecuador. As part of you wages you get to live on the plantation, as part of your wages...so you get a lovely pad for this...a room maybe for 8 -10 people, no beds, no bedding, no protective clothing. for when you are working with highly toxic chemicals they spray on bananas....People are sub contracted, so have no union rights which means empoyers get out of responsibility for working conditions, they have no social protection and no paid leave. A few months ago some ... read more

We eventually arrived at Riomuchacho farm a bit shell shocked after our long and winding bumpy journey and got straight into the course making a bacteria culture for the land, with our 8 other fellow students, there are also around 20 other volunteers, this made for a lively farm with plenty going on. We were given one of the best accomodations, a bamboo house on stilts with a resident fruit bat and tree frog that overlooked a stream (a river in the winter) which you could go down to and catch fat pink prawns if you brought your net and patience. The farm was a very noisy place roosters would be cockledooing at 4am in the morning that would set the pigs off and then the whole farm would begin a new day. There are banana ... read more

After being in Canoa for about 5 days, we still hadnt got cash and were putting everything on a tab. I started to get worried that i wasnt keeping record of what i was spending, so we asked for the bill before we went to get money. I couldnt believe it when 5 nights accomodation and all our food and drink only came to 25 pounds each. Canoa just keeps getting better and better. The journey to get cash involved taking a bus and a ferry. When we got off the ferry, we immediately found the cash point to get some deniro. Rather than heading straight back, we though we should have a look around. We went to a pharmacey to stock up on insect repellant and i try to get something to put on my ... read more

Ok Ok..... It seems like all the e mails i am sending back home, must be portraying me to be having the worst time ever. Yes, it has rained more than i thought it would, the waves have been abismal and i have met far too many Americans and Germans than i would have liked. I have been hit in the head by my surfboard, eaten for breakfast, lunch and dinner by every mosquito in Central and South America. I miss friends and family from back home and to add insult to injury, we even got robbed and had to spend 3 nights living with a certified wack job. However, despite all that i am still having a ball. When i had dreams about this trip before i left, i would imagine constant sunshine, golden sandy ... read more

Right at this very moment, I am in Biah de Caracas, which is the beginning and end of our costal excursions, with lots in between. 4 nights ago? we got on the bus from Otavalo to Quito, a mere 3 hour ride, but it was awful...we were kinda shoved on the bus, which meant we had to keep our big backpacks on our laps, and put our little bags up overhead. to make a long story short, when i got off the bus, my little bag was open; my fanny pack had been stolen, and in it was my camera. this was probably the 3rd worse thing that could have happened on the bus, and very unlikely, seeing as it was right above my head and i checked on it every time someone walked by. but ... read more

Its 3pm when the bus drops us off in Canoa. We have been on the road since 8am and the journey from Atacames involved 2 transfers. Traveling from place to place has been one of the most enjoyable parts of the trip so far. Seven hours of time on a bus can easily be occupied. As well as the usual selection of locals making their living selling goods to commuters, it is also fun to watch the variety of different people going about their everyday lives, as we move through different villages and towns. The presidential elections in Ecuador take place on Sunday 26th November. Because of this, every house, shed, fence, wall and bus stop has been painted in the colours of its owners favoured candidate. There are also posters and flyers everywhere, which make ... read more

After an extended trip to Canoa, the time had finally come for us to leave and move on with our adventures. We both had the itch to keep traveling, even though we found it hard to say goodbye to the small little beach town of Canoa. The warmth of its people, food, and beaches will always hold a place in our hearts. The last couple of days found us hanging out with some locals, swimming, paragliding, taking long scenic walks along the beach to our hostal, and enjoying the tranquil life of living in a little town by the beach. Here are some photos from our final couple of days in Canoa:... read more

so after a long, bumpy, music-blasting overnite bus ride through the andes, we arrived in san vicente on the coast of ecuador at 4:45am. from there we took a taxi to canoa, a beautiful beach town only 15 minutes away. we arrived so early that we had to sleep in the hammocks outside of the hostal, and watched the sunrise as we waited for our room to be ready. the people in this town are really friendly and happy, very much the opposite than many of the people we had met in quito. since we have been here its been lots of relaxing, afternoon naps and plenty of sunshine. yesterday we had our most exciting day so far, as we went paragliding with an american guide called greg. it was so much fun, i finally experienced ... read more
