I was just robbed. It was unglamorous, i didn´t even know it was happening. A guy came up to our table and passed out little forms that said he was deaf and he needed money... my bag was hanging on my chair, and when he came back to collect money he was oddly friendly to us when we declined to hand anything over to him... gave us a thumbs up with the one hand that wasn´t occupied stealing my stuff. I don´t really care about the money, but in that bag was my book that I was really into reading and my journal. I had spent some solid time writing a descriptive blog entry about the past while and recorded it in there, so here´s the bare bones, i just got robeed version... After leaving Quito ... read more

I don´t have a whole lot to say about good old Canoa. It´s just a village on the beach, not much going on. I just wanted one last chance to do some surfing before heading inland so Jaakko and I stayed 5 days and hit the water as much as possible. I guess the most memorable part was the full day journey it took to get there when we estimated to be about 3 hours. We took a bus (they told us direct to Canoa) which stopped in some random town. They tole us to get off and that we´d have to change busses sometime within the next 2 hours. Turns out our next bus broke down before it even got to the bus station for us to get on it. So we had to ... read more

Well, we left La Hesperia a week ago and took a dusty, rough 8-hour bus ride to a small surfing town called Canoa. The best way to describe a bus ride in Ecuador is chaos. From arriving in a dusty, hot and humid bus terminal in the bigger cities to the constant bumps, swerves and random music and movies that we experience along the journey. Going through Santo Domingo reminds me of a wild-west city where chaos reigns and it represents the transition into the coastal region of Ecuador. Our bus that went from Santo Domingo to Pedernales looked as though it might not make it as it rattled going over potholes and bumps in the road. Although the memories of the chaos and nervousness of riding down a mountainside on a muddy trail in pouring ... read more

The itching has subsided, the nausea has calmed and finally a restful night. After a week in the jungle, nearly eaten alive (not by snakes, but various insects) and a bout of some kind of food poisoning or flu bug, not to mention the damn roosters squawking at all hours, we finally feel at peace. But only because we have landed on the widest, longest, sandiest beach we have ever seen, with waves crashing in all day long and sleepy streets during this quiet low season. Our hostal of choice, Coco Loco, has a sandy entrance where you can dig your toes in while sipping on a tasty pina colada and then lounge in a hammock. Then hit the waves with a boogie board! Now that's living! LOL Actually we're nearly bored, and ready to move ... read more

After our amazing time at Sani Lodge, we headed West towards the coast to Canoa. The 12 hour journey involved 3 taxis, 1 bus and 1 boat, but we got there in the end. Canoa is a beautiful sleepy little beach town, with not alot going on. We stayed in the lovely Hotel Bambu, and had a great bar on the beach, and awesome food too. To be honest, not alot was done in Canoa! We enjoyed happy hour cocktails at sunset, and got free dancing lessons in an Irish bar which was deserted apart from us! The theme of swinging away the hours in hammocks continued, so much so that we developed extreme hammocking, with me pushing Kate as hard as I could- Rad! It was great to unwind by the sea after the sensory ... read more

Hey! So I´ve now been in Canoa for almost three weeks. Spanish classes are going well. I have two instructors, a father and son. The son runs the place with his family. They have a 5 yr old daughter that´s pretty cute and who will speak with me (she´s a lot better than I am=). The father (who´s about 70) keeps talking about me getting married (no not to him)... it´s quite funny, but I´ve already switched my ring to the other hand and I´m about to ask for photos of kids that I can say are mine. My days are pretty nice. I spend 4 hours in class, I go running almost every other day along the beach, and I spend a lot of time sitting in either the hammock on my balcony, or in ... read more

Hola! As I left it last I was wandering around Quito. My final day there I walked through a park where a lot of artists were selling their paintings and an outdoor market was set up. It was there in a nice booth of handicrafts and weaving that I saw a beanie type hat with the New York Yankees symbol. How sad, I thought as I looked up and saw another NYY baseball cap coming my way. It was definitely time to get out of the city and learn some Spanish... Now the bus ride from Quito to Canoa on the coast was quite an adventure. Around 7:30am I found myself at the main bus terminal in front of the bus that was recommended by the Spanish school. It was not one of the luxury bus ... read more

Vide Verde, our spanish school, gives the option to study in either the rainforest or on an organic farm near the coastal resort town Canoa. It was our first overnight bus trip in Ecuador and it wasn't exactly, how should I say, comfortable. If you are over 5'10", you pretty much can't ride a bus in Ecuador for more than 2 hours. If your name is Kevin Patti, don´t get on a bus in Ecuador. Night buses have added security compared to the typical daytime bus ride in Ecuador. You have an assigned seat, you are searched before you get on the bus, and your luggage has a tag put on it and you are given a recipt so risk of our things being stolen is minimal. The seats recline really far which is nice except ... read more
