South America » Brazil » Bahia » Salvador August 30th 2006

Greetings from the mighty Amazon! It´s always been a dream of mine since I was little to go to the Amazon, and here I am! Getting onto a boat in Belém, where the Amazon reaches the ocean, I was off on my river adventure. The boat held about 150 or so people, and, although it was very cramped, it was much nicer than I expected. There was a top deck with music, a TV, and a bar, where you could escape from the craziness below. On the middle deck was the sleeping/eating/bathing (if you chose, I didn´t) area. Basically how it works is, you bring your own hammock (which you can buy for about $7 or so) and sling it wherever you can. It´s a crazy maze of people, baggage, hammocks, children, everything. Very, very cozy ... read more

Lucy forgot to mention I was called up to represent my country whilst in the Pantanal. I tried not to get too overwhelmed making my debut against Brazil away but ultimately there was little I could do to prevent a 5-3 shock defeat. The shock wasnt we lost but that Brazil played long-ball! I would like to say it was one of the proudest moments of my life to pull on that Engalnd jersey and run out in front of a packed house but as we had to play ¨skins¨ and the crowd buggered off as soon as the lunch bell was rung it would be a lie. That is except one hilarious Brazilian who made the joke about the English needing sun-tan cream every two minutes. Maybe I should have took some notice as by ... read more

Iguazu falls. Another UNESCO world heritage site. We went to both the Argentinian and Brazillian sides of the falls. Quick stats - higher than Niagra falls and wider than Victoria falls. As for Brazil - other than being half the area of south america it also has borders with every other country in South America, other than Ecuador and Chile. The Argentinian side gives the magnified view and then the Brazil side is an overall picture. It was still pretty amazing, although the water levels are as low as they have ever been. You can see where the waterfalls should have been, but the levels were so low in places there were pools of stagnent water. Hopefully they will get more rain soon. It still looked amazing. Set in the midst of jungle with Tucans and ... read more

Ta begge disse ... read more

So after the Wildlife feast that was the Jungle & Pantanal it was now water week!!! Firstly a visit to Bonito and then onto Foz Do Iguacu.... Bonito (spanish for beautiful) is a sleepy little place that lives and breaths its tourist attractions, these are the crystal clear waterways that are just teaming with fish and 72m underground lake for divers (not me!! yet!!)... Only planning to spend one whole day here (2 nights) i booked my trip striaght away... It was for a 4 hour snorkel trip down the river!!! now this to me sounded like a long time! and in the back of my mind i didn't know if i could swim for 4 hours!!!! but after the 1 hour bus trip to the place it all soon became clear!!! Crystal Clear!!! It was ... read more

South America » Brazil » Bahia » Porto Seguro August 26th 2006

Well today is my last day in paradise, that is my last day at the beach in Porto Seguro. Andrea and I had an awesome time here soaking up the sun. She left early (05:00) yesterday morning to Rio to catch her flight to Mexico City and left me to enjoy an extra two days here. Luckly we met a young German couple who were holidaying here until they go to Bolivia so I´ve been hanging out with them since Andrea left. The tour company we came with, cvc, has been great. We did a city tour on monday followed by a visit to the north beach. This beach is heavily commercialized with bar after bar on the sand where you can enjoy a cold Capirinha before a dip in the ocean, but there are so ... read more

South America » Brazil » Maranhão » São Luis August 25th 2006

I only really spent a quick stopover in São Luíz, up on my way to get to the Amazon, but it was definitely well worth the extra time and money. The city of São Luíz has a long history (like many important Brazilian cities in the northeast) that goes back to the beginning of the 17th century. The slave trade was extremely important because of the agriculture in the surrounding area, and as a result, the city developed a very unique character all its own. The city fell into decay late in the 19th century, but was brought back, and is quite well preserved. The buildings are spectacular examples of the 17th and 18th century architecture. The region also has a very unique festival called Bumba Meu Boi which lasts over several months. In it, through ... read more
