The Death Train?! More like the comfort Train! I think the Death part refers to the onboard ebtertainment: two films starring the Rock (sorry Sam!) and 80s pop videos. In actual fact it's because they used to let Bolivians unable to get a seat sit on the roof. You can guess the rest! As soon as I got to the border of Brazil there was a definite change: people wore smiles and Brazil t-shirts, and there were huge supermarkets and all things Western- very much unlike the impoverishment of Bolivia. I headed straight for my tour of the Pantanal, Brazil's giant marshland which covers half the area of France. There we slept in hammocks, went on sunrise/set walks, safaris in the woods, kayaking, horse-back (or should I say mule-back) riding, and saw various monkeys, capybaras (the ... read more

Arriving in Manaus was everything I expected it to be. As soon as I stepped off the boat, I was thrust into the swirling madness of a port in the largest city in the Amazon--people rushing around, carrying cargo from boat to shore, families dashing to their boat, all under the blazing Amazonian sun. (As for the ride itself from Santarém to Manaus, it was a lot more pleasant this time, far less crowded, a brand new ship, and much better food.) Manaus is an interesting city, due to its location and atmosphere, but the real reason to come here is to make a jungle excursion, which I arranged within a few hours of arriving. Leaving bright and early, we took a combination of several vans and boats to arrive at a lodge of Lago Mamorí, ... read more

We arrived in Rio at our luxiourious hotel the Ipanema Plaza overlooking the beach to our left and the statue of Christ to the right - which even to this distance looks magnifico! The weather wasnt that great when we got there but in true British style we headed to the beach in our swim suits, whilst the locals in their thick jumpers handed us towels and offered as grilled cheese. The sand is the best we have ever seen - so fluffy! but obviously we didnt stay there for long. That night we headed for a Brazilian buffet. Maz peaked early and faded away as many do! It was very nice. Basically we learnt early that the buffet consists of providing the diners with a picture of a cow disected into 9 pieces and then ... read more

Rio... We have been a little unlucky with our Brazil weather (but it is winter) and have had some rain whilst in Rio. Nonetheless it is clearly a very beautiful city. Some would say that its the most beautiful in the world and I wouldn´t argue with that description. Theres something about it...more than either Sydney or Vancouver has. We´re staying in a small hotel in Copacabana. I unfortunately have the Barry Maniloe song going over and over in my head. The first night we headed out to check out some Rio clubs. Much like London its an expensive place to party, but it was fun. We took a guided taxi ride (from Louis with pretty good English, if only he didn´t get right and left mixed up) up to the peak of Corcovado (Hunckback in ... read more

South America » Brazil » Minas Gerais » Belo Horizonte September 2nd 2006

After more then 4 months here in Belo Horizonte, I'm departing. In due course, I´ve spent the past days saying my goodbyes - and realizing exactly how many people I know here. My work has brought me into contact with a huge number of people as I found myself working with some 200 children. Perhaps it speaks to the hospitality of the Brazilians, or perhaps it´s just my good luck that I´ve had the opporunity to meet so many fascinating people. But let's rewind. A quick summary of "what I did on my summer vacation." I arrived in Brazil without any idea of what I would be doing here. In fact, I only came here because I knew people and I had some familiarity with the language (the deciding moment was talking with Randy at Berlex ... read more

Brasil, ten points!! the people are fantastic. Really funny and good fun, and totally helpfull too. I found it hard to understand their colourful Portugese but scraped through with my Spanish and the various international hand signals that have never let me down. and aside from the wonderfull people, the country is beautiful, food is great(very important) and there is a great atmosphere most places you go. It's a shame I didn't have more time to have a better look around, but I'll be back after this little taster for sure. I did get to visit a couple of friends i met in New Zealand though, and their families looked after me very well so a huge thankyou to both of you Paula and Flavia for hooking me up so good! Also I'm happy to announce ... read more

South America » Brazil » Rio de Janeiro » Ilha Grande September 1st 2006

So last time i left you we were shopping it up in the dizzy heights of Curitiba... We survived a rather posh night bus to Rio and then another bus ride down the coast before a 90 minute boat ride took us to Illa Grande. On a side note to anybody planning a night bus to anywhere...its ALL about the medicinal products. Any of the -azapam (valium) family will do and I´ve used a fair few varieties on this trip. (of note you can buy almost anything over the counter in Bolivia - much cheaper than at home, including antibiotics and antimalarials) This was well worth the trip. Its on all the must see lists for Brazil. A small island off the coast South of Rio with jungle inland and tropical beaches surrounding it. The town ... read more
