After travelling on what should have been a 10.5hr flight we flew over the shore of South America and into a massive thunderstorm. So big a storm that Guarulhos airport was closed due to the Lightning and 100km/h winds. We were circling and running low on fuel so got diverted to Campos. Finally we got the all clear and flew the 85km to São Paulo. We are here and so far so good........ read more

Yo People, So Vick had listed all the places she wanted to visit in SP, we had done the theater and the art museum the day before, left on the list was the science museum Catavento Cultural e Educacional. This was our main task for the day. We got the metro into Pedro, and walked to science museum. This was a bit of a hike but as we got closer it looked good; there were loads of people in the local park playing football, which is good to see. The museum was only a £1 to get in as students, however it’s amazing…if you’re a child!! Everything is in Portuguese and is designed for children to interact with science. We still walked around and played around with things…big kids really!!! We left and walked back into ... read more

Hi Friends, So we woke in our new hostel: Global backpackers, its clean and best of all not too noisy at night!!! The plan was to go on the free walking tour of SP with this couple we had met; they were a Spanish girl called Maria and her French boyfriend Seb. We got the metro to Republica, where the free walking tour commenced. It’s free, however the guide will keep going on about giving a tip!! Not free then-but the going rate is approximately £3-4 each. We stayed with the 3 and a half hour tour for 30 mins as all we saw were buildings and the information was not that interesting, Vick, the couple and myself ditched the tour and managed to get a tour of the theater (Theatro municipal de Sao Paulo), so ... read more

Hello Everyone, So we woke up on the bus, still on our 24-hour travel from Bonito, I won’t lie sleep was sparse on the bus but we arrived in Sao Paulo at 1300. We worked out the huge queue in the bus station was for metro tickets…dam, it took about 30 mins to get tickets to Hostel in Paridiso. I also did my good deed for the day by hitting this magazine machine for some lady whose book had become stuck coming out!!! We had about a 10-minute walk from the Metro station to the hostel; first impressions of Sao Paulo are good, nice metro system, clean streets and people drinking in the streets everywhere…my type of town!!! So we got to the hostel around 1400 and it seemed good, lots of English speaking people at ... read more

Thursday 18th June 2015 The problem with long-distance bus journeys in a country where sunsets come early, is that one arrives in unknown territory in the dark. Our bus yesterday from Sao Sebastiao brought us to Santos at dusk, so by the time we had got a taxi to our hotel, it was dark. The receptionist spoke just a few words of English, no Spanish at all and we failed to discover where we could find any tourist information so that we could see the sights today. Therefore, this morning, after breakfast, we headed for the beach and just walked along the promenade for two or three kilometres and then we found an old streetcar converted into a Tourist Information Centre. The beach is enormous; seven kilometres of wide golden sands fringed by palms and five ... read more

Monday 15th June 2015 Being twenty five kilometres south of the Tropic of Capricorn doesn´t make any difference to the climate, or does it? No, of course not! However, as we write this blog, in a chilly 18 degrees, the rain is pouring down and the views are clouded over! Actually, we left Parati on Friday in pouring rain as well, and the weekend here has been hot and sunny; it just feels non-tropical now! Our bus journey last Friday, despite the torrential rain, was quite enjoyable and if the weather had been fine it would have been spectacular. The bus was an hour late and then the driver wanted his lunch so we departed nearly two hours later than scheduled, but this isn´t unusual! The Atlantic Rainforest is one of the most stunning ... read more

SAO PAULO After a 3 hour flight from Tucson to Atlanta we boarded a second flight of 9 hours to Sao Paulo Brazil. We've spent the past 2 days touring the city of 22+ million people with our great local guide Gil ?? One of the first things we realized is that this is a HUGE city. Sao Paulo garnered national headlines last year during the World Cup Soccer matches. Many locals do not have much good to say about the whole experience with the typical government and "capitalistic" involvement. Our biggest barrier was the fact that no one in our group speaks Portuguese (aside from Gil) and unlike most of the European countries as well as Central American ones, English is not considered an "important" language therefore most adults do not speak it. Thankfully Lisa's ... read more

It was time to go home. We did not get a good sleep because people were partying the 3 day weekend away for Semana Santa. We awoke at 3 am, got ready, and went down to the lobby for our ride. Our ride should have been there at 4 am. When 4:30 am came and he was still not there, we got ourselves a taxi. We negotiated the same price we would have paid for the other ride, so that was ok. With little traffic, we got to SCL airport quickly. We checked in for our GOL flight to Sao Paulo and went to the gate to wait. Delta has a nonstop from Santiagoto Atlanta, however, it was full in business class. Spoiled, I know. At just before 8 am, we were on GOL flight 7661, ... read more

We awoke at 9 am and had the wonderful breakfast that our Airbnb host provided. We then just sat around until about 1 pm. Our flight to Sao Paulo was not until 2:35 pm. We flew to Sao Paulo on GOL flight 1385 which was a 737-800 aircraft. I was in seat 21F and it was a routine flight. Our connection to Santiago was not until 8:50 pm so we just waited and had some dinner. The next flight was GOL 7662 which was another 737-800 and it was a smooth and routine flight of just under 4 hours. I was in seat 26F and slept mostly. We arrived into Santiago at 1:05 am and went straight to the hotel to get a good nights sleep. We were staying with someone from Airbnb, but chose to ... read more

Check out of our hotel was at 12 noon so no need to rush. Our official time to check in with MSC was 3pm but experience told us to get there as early as possible. The plan was to have a leisurely breakfast, check out at 12 and then head straight for the cruise terminal. Being Sunday, most of the other guests must have had the same 'leisurely breakfast' notion because on strolling in to the breakfast lounge at 10am it was already quite full with guests. During breakfast we overhead a number of different accents including British, Australian and German. I wonder how many of these would be joining us today on the start of our Ocean going Odyssey. On checking out we asked for a taxi to the cruise terminal thinking a hotel of ... read more
