heh, i mean...today really is march 31st! i know nothing of the april days 1-5. anyway. so...ahem...*today* was much better than yesterday. i crammed a bunch of portuguese last night and just decided to suck it up and act like an assface if i had to. after all, everyone expects americans to be assfaces! anyway...in one of the more bizarre coincidences, kyle's uncle just happened to be in rio today. and after a little confusion about the buses and taxis, (most things are confusing when you have a working portuguese vocabulary of about 15 words, all pronounced wrong) we met him at his hotel, where he generously offered to take us up to see the big statue of jesus up on corcovado. you know what i'm talking about. you've seen him in movies. usually the camera ... read more

English With “only” six hours of bus we could reach from São Paolo one of the best attraction we were dreaming of during our trip. However, it took us two days to leave the comfortable Toninelli’s house and the Parmigiano… Rio is called the cidade meravilhosa by the Brazilians for some more than justified reasons. In this city nature and civilization combine together in a dramatic and harmonious setting. Rio is made of contrasts: astonishing beaches and mountains of unusual shape, tropical forests and horrible concrete buildings, luxurious neighborhoods and favelas, peace and caos, happiness, music and violence. It is difficult remain indifferent to such an disordered and amazing scenario. In Rio we chose one of the best neighborhoods to stay: Ipanema, famous for the beaches and the song “The girl of Ipanema”. In comparison to ... read more

yesss... two of my favorite things. well, with all our planning and arranging, we ran out of time to learn portuguese. no problem, i thought. we'll pick it up along the way. i know spanish, i'm sure we'll be fine. i was unaware that portuguese sounds a lot like what i imagine to be italian and latin...spoken backwards. and that practically no one speaks english and can thus guide us through our quest to learn. so what does this all mean? when we went scrounging through the streets of copacabana for some food this evening...totally groggy, totally starving (i ate a granola bar on the plane at 4 am EST)...we couldn't read a single thing on any menu. of any restaurant we could afford, anyway. or if we could, it was accompanied by other, even MORE ... read more

I can't seem to get past my initial concept that the cultural differences between the United States and places outside the United States would be much more significant than it turns out they are. I had pretty much built it up to the point that I expected to feel as though I landed on another planet once I got off the plane this morning. This, both fortunately and unfortunately, is not the case. While their numbers may contain only eight digits against our ten, Brazilians still use phones just like I do. I'm still holding out hope that the occasional South American can... oh I don't know, grow wings and breathe fire? Just a little? kyle t.... read more

I woke up this morning and my German buddy was leaving to go home so I decided to see about booking myself on the Favela tour. The favela is a slum a very poor area. You have not already seen the movie "City of God " you have to watch it. that Is what I went to see. I was really unsure about the idea of being there but I was glad I did it. The tour started at the bottom of the Rochina Favela in Rio there was seven of us. we got onto motorcycle taxis and road to the top´. Ok no helmuts and these guys drive like madness. I have necer been so freaked out before. they would pass on the inside on the outside in the middle. the road was full of ... read more

Hello Everyone! The time after Carnaval has just seemed to fly right by, so fast that we can’t believe we are returning to the states in just 4 days! We had an amazing send off from Recife (more on that in a bit), but currently we are in Southern Brazil near Sao Paulo in a suburb called Alphaville and have been since the beginning of March. We also just returned from a 5 day trip to Rio de Janeiro where we made many new great friends and saw some fantastic sights. So without out further ado, let’s tell this tale. When we last wrote, we had been unwinding from Carnaval and getting ready for our send off party before we headed south. Samuel wanted to have a big send off for us and there were talks ... read more

All right. Good news and Bad News. First the Good news. I broke the Camera. We went up to Corcovado. Amazing view half-way up, took some awesome pics of the city. I jumped down, and back up onto a wall to get a different view, and kinda didn't make it up onto the wall. The camera was in my hand, and I smacked it onto the wall. Camera go boom. No worky. No more photos. Sorry everyone. It kinda wrecked my whole mood yesterday. On the good side, it was entirely cloudy up at the top, and really impossible to see the Cristo statue. Every once in a while, it would clear and you would get this sorta foggy outline, but you had to be fast on the button. Anyway...an altogether anticlimactic trip to the famous ... read more

Okay, so for the last few days, life has fallen into a pattern of waking up in the early afternoon, and wondering what to do with ourselves. Usually, we end up eating something, then heading downtown. Yesterday, we went late down to the Center of the City, and toured around the Ipanema area (we had done Copacabana previously). Included in our tour were the famous Bar of the Garota da Ipanema (the bar where Vinicius de Moraes and Antonio Carlos Jobim wrote the famous song) and the Toca de Vinicius (a less touristy, more music-oriented version of the same thing) I hit a music store and almost died. We finally went shopping at a mall and found some decent buys. The only problem with that whole venture, is that I forgot the battery to the camera ... read more

Hi friends and family! This is my first trip to South America and I have been here for about 5 days. One word can't describe it, but what comes to mind is Incredible! Where do I begin?! Flight was actaully fine considering that I had to take a zillion anti-nausea pills. The crew...Scott(Mr. brazil)...could not have survived without this guy...absolutely a must have kind of guy for such trips...a walking stud who is resourceful. "Crash" would not have been here because of him....LOVE the guy...Truly "a Brother from another mother". He loves the conference here..is actually learning stuff about regional anesthesia. Sam....another bro who is implicated in my being here in Brazil. He keeps you cognizant and real. Ok, just a skeleton of the past 5 days: Day One:Went to the beach.... awesome...and caught some rays ... read more
