We’ve arrived at our first destination - Rio de Janeiro and have been staying in a small guest house called ´chez Michel´run by, you guessed it, a French guy called Michel! It´s very laid back and friendly. Just the kind of place we need to get ourselves sorted out before we get started on the bikes. The culture shock arriving in Rio was nothing compared to our last trip when we arrived in Madras and nearly took the next plane home in a state of shock. Walking around Rio you could imagine being in a kind of European city really, obviously there are differences but they are not as marked as in other places we’ve been to. This is partly because we are staying in between the two famous beaches Ipanema and Copacabana. It’s the richest ... read more

Today was habibi's birthday and we went with a friend of ours to a dance party called B.I.T.C.H which is on every three months or so. It used to be at an amusement park until some queen fell out of the rollercoaster so now it is at some kind of pool/spa complex by the lagoon. The venue wasn't great but the music and atmosphere was good. It's true what they say though 'Rio is all about the day...and Sao Paulo is all about the night'. The parties and clubs here are nowhere as good as in Sao Paulo....but then again the beaches in Rio are beautiful and people here don't go to the beach to lie down and tan...most are standing up talking...drinking...flirting...its really a social event...especially on the weekends. ... read more

Sorry it’s been so long since my last blog, am sure everyone is waiting in anticipation for the next exciting instalment! We have been in South America for about 5 weeks now and having incredible time! Sen and I were really sad to leave New Zealand and team consumption, especially the Great Danes (missing you both loads!!!), not so bothered about Simon and old WHJ (for those of you who don’t know WHJ stands for Wandering hands Jackson - I feel Phil’s new nickname needs no more explanation than that!) since they were following us to Chile a few days later. Really liked Santiago we hadn’t heard great things about it and so were surprised by how much we loved it, may have had something to do with all the amazing food which after all the ... read more

Today, I went hangliding to see the city. pretty cool experience. we glided through the air and then landed on a really pretty beach. the beaches here are perfect. i have never felt softer sand. the water is warm and then there is always something happening on the sand from futbol games to live music and dancing. Thanks to Ryan, an american guy who rented our spare room for a few days, we finally did some sightseeing. Went downtown to check out the huge and strange looking Metrolpolitan Church before catching the old (and a bit scary) mountain trolly up to Santa Teresa. Santa Teresa is a small town up on the mountain just 15 minutes from down town Rio. According to legend it started out as a refuge for escaped slaves back in the days when Rio was the main slave port of South America and later people moved here to escape a yellow fever epedemic. In the end of the 19th century Santa Teresa became popular with the wealthy people and as a result there are many amazing victorian mansions clinging to the mountain side. ... read more

Well, here I am back in Rio - 4 days ahead of schedule!! Salvador was definitely not my kind of place. Too many tourists, too much hassle - just too much in general..... We spent our second day there on the beach. We thought it would be good to get out of town and get a bit of peace and quiet. No such luck! I made the error of sitting up on my chair to buy a drink - big mistake. Some bloke ended up with my foot in his hands trying to give me a massage and would not take "no" for an answer. Not entirely sure why he would want my feet in his hands but he was determined to ascertain (somehow) that I was healthy. Anyway, the foot massage extended into a leg ... read more

Have been in Rio a few days now and its like a holiday from our holiday. Staying in a nice apartment in Ipanema which by total fluke is only two blocks from the gay beach...need to work on my tan before I go there though. Weather is nice and warm and we have spent most of our time on the beach so far. Hopefully we will get motivated to see some of the sights eventually... Congrats on the job Eva!... read more

We arrived in Rio on April 9th pretty late and, getting a bus because the airport taxis were very overpriced, it seemed really exciting, a new country, a new language, arriving in the middle of the night. We’d booked ourselves a nice hotel online. $100 for the room was well over budget but nice for the first few days in a place like Rio, and only a block from the famous Copacabana beach. For the next three days we walked around the beachside neighbourhood, sitting on the beach in the day, and checking out the stalls selling gear to tourists and the restaurants at night, drinking beer and watching prostitutes flirt with potential customers. We both liked Rio from the start, and it felt exciting, even if we were only there a few days. I’d heard ... read more
