The Metropolitan
Thanks to Ryan, an american guy who rented our spare room for a few days, we finally did some sightseeing. Went downtown to check out the huge and strange looking Metrolpolitan Church before catching the old (and a bit scary) mountain trolly up to Santa Teresa. Santa Teresa is a small town up on the mountain just 15 minutes from down town Rio. According to legend it started out as a refuge for escaped slaves back in the days when Rio was the main slave port of South America and later people moved here to escape a yellow fever epedemic. In the end of the 19th century Santa Teresa became popular with the wealthy people and as a result there are many amazing victorian mansions clinging to the mountain side.
