WOWWWWWWW wat een uitzicht. GA IK NOOIT VERGETEN. Super mooi!

Not much to report. Been living pretty quietly the past few weeks and this is my last week of teaching. Bingo has been going well................ Was invited to the theatre last Friday with the kids. They were really excited and were all washed and dressed in their best clothes ready to go. However, the bus didn´t turn up and we didn´t get there. They were all gutted. I felt really sorry for them especially Alan as it was his birthday. They were all really sweet though. As we were walking down for the bus they were fighting over who was going to hold my hand and then who was going to sit beside me at the bus-stop. I felt like the Pied Piper and probably would have had a visit from the social services back home! ... read more

Well here we are in Beautiful Rio....well beautiful that might be a little over the top...it is absolutely pissing down with rain!!! The taxi ride from the bus station started with the taxi driver trying to charge us $35 which is about $17.5USD and when we complained he insisted it was correct and got out his book to prove it, only to find that the price in the book was cheaper!!! dumbass i mean really he should know his prices better!! Anyway we got dropped off in Copacabana and went in search of our hostel in the pouring rain...after a fruitless search and being soaked we saw to english girls and we asked them if they knew where the hostel was...they didnt but said that the hostel they were staying at might know. So off we ... read more

It´s the start of my 4th week - I still can´t believe I´ve only been here for 3 weeks. My Portuguese is improving but I still understand more than I can speak which is a bit frustrating. However, I can get the odd sentence out that makes sense! My teaching week was pretty quiet (apart from a visit from the police and their rifles on Thursday). It was Mother´s Day here on Sunday so all the kids made cards and I translated their soppy messages into English. All the tough boys are just big softies at heart - it was really sweet. Went to the Fluminense v Vasco cup game during the week. We didn´t have tickets so as I was trying to find a good deal I was getting called a tight arsed Scot in ... read more

For some reason I seem to have made an arse of my typing up my first week. The pictures are back to front and I typed a whole load more and I´ve no idea what happened to it. I can´t remember what I had typed either! Anyway, to continue................. I´m working in a favela called Prazeres. It´s only a 10 minute walk from the house so it´s pretty good. My first day of teaching was ok. I had two girls fighting and rolling around on the floor with handfulls of each other´s hair. We also had the police come calling which meant a bit of friendly fire with the locals. I´ve been told that nobody ever gets shot but we´ve to stay indoors when they come calling just in case! It´s probably not as bad as ... read more

Here I am again trying to remember what I did last week. Monday was a holiday so there was no school. Tuesday, the guy that runs my project decided to change the timetable and put the kids into 4 different groups. It should work out that I have 2 in the morning and 2 in the afternoon throughout the week. However, none of them seem to stick to their groups and I end up with some coming to class both morning and afternoon. It doesn´t help with my lesson planning. Anyway, Tuesday I had a class in the morning which was fine and I stayed around in the afternoon to see what goes on in their other classes. The teacher of their environmental class didn´t turn up so they decided to have another English class. Nothing ... read more

We arrived in Rio 9am local time after a gruelling 13 hour flight from Heathrow via Sao Paulo. As soon as we´d dropped our bags at the hostel, we headed down town for our first taste of the world famous Copacabana beach. After a stroll down the 3km of golden sands, it was time to relax at a beach side cafe serving the ultimate refreshment, a near ripe coconut straight from the freezer, top hacked off with a machette and a straw to lap up the chilled milk inside. Heaven on a hot (31 degrees!) day. Although we were shattered from our long flight, the lure of football at the Maracana stadium was enough to keep us awake. Our hostel ran a trip to the largest football stadium in the world, where we watched local team ... read more

I can´t belive I´ve only been here a week, it feels like ages. The most important thing is the weather is great - hot and sunny every day. Have managed not to get burnt so far but I guess there´s plenty of time for that. Eventually started work at my placement this week. Monday was orientation day but the guy that runs my project wasn´t there so he was going to pick me up on Tuesday at 9am. Being on Brazil time this eventually changed to 11am, 1pm and then 3pm. Needless to say he didn´t turn up at 3 either! Nor the next day................. I eventually started teaching on Thursday. The project is called Danca pra Galera, which means dance to the crowd. As well as English the kids are taught dance, environmental issues and ... read more
