Day 8 Quite a lazy one as there wasn´t too much to do here really. Made good use of the hotel´s facilities - the jacuzzi and steamroom and went for a walk into town. The weather was boiling! The city was really nice and clean and you felt really safe compared to the nasty Sao Paulo. In the evening we went to an all you can eat place which was absolutely awesome! We then caught another super-duper bus overnight to Foz do Iguazu.... read more

Hey all, this is faith writing. i arrived in rio on the 9th and bru and i spent a night in rio. the waves were really big on the beach by our hotel, and there were tons of surfers out. We drove through sao paolo, spent a night on the road, and then arrived in Curitiba, the capital city of the state of Parana. We stayed at a hotel across from a park, and at the end of pedestrian mall. All day and into the evening the mall was filled with people shopping and eating at the sidewalk cafes, even when it dropped to the 50s at night. Good weather for sipping quentao - similar to mulled wine - and people watching. It gets dark around 6pm because its winter, but everyone stays outside to socialize, ... read more

This morning was spent packing up to leave robbys obviously there were a few tearfull goodbyes!! ;p and then it was off to the airport! it was an 1hour 40 min flight with the most amazing views of the country! if you ask me the flight is an unmissable part of our trip so far! Curitiba was not that amazing to be honest, and cold so so cold minus a million degrees...okay 4 but it felt colder {so cold dom had to buy a jumper},and not that cheap, although our room was $R30 for a double ensuite! Thats less than a fiver each! it was a bit mank and the bathroom was just part of the bedroom with no privicy at all! but we got through it! although we gave the shower a miss due to exposed ... read more

I've heard that the Japanese actually see the world differently (to us Westerners) because of their writing system. Apparently that's why they take photographs of traffic signs, chavs and council flats. That got me thinking about why we travel. Seeing new things and interpreting them in relation to what you're used to seems to make a lot of people happy. I wonder how quickly that honeymoon period would slither into the banal were we to emigrate to the postcard or photograph. The traveller is always seeking new things because they are consistently discontent with the known. Yet sometimes we do miss that known. Most of us find ourselves in McDonalds or Pizza Hut abroad from time to time, even if we don't eat there at home; probably because we're just bored of putting the effort into ... read more

Hello all, Been fairly busy since the last entry. Rio was lots of fun, so much so that it was a kind of a groundhog day in the end - get drunk, sleep all day, rinse and repeat. Everyone was so knackered that they couldn´t be bothered to get on a bus but I got itchy feet and after 2 weeks of partying (yes, even me - managed a 9am finish once too!) I hopped on a bus to a small town a few hours from Rio called Paraty. Whitewashed buildings and cobbled streets etc. Is a port so managed a couple of proper meals too - lovely fish. Stayed for a few days to relax - lots of meandering down said streets, boat trip around some islands, a day on a very quiet beach (Ipanema ... read more

This entry's all about a not-so-famous-but-great-nonetheless place called Curitiba. It's located a bit down and to the left of Rio for the geography students amongst us. Curitiba was described in the Lonely Planet as one of Brazil's urban success stories, and we thought we'd check it out on our way up to Rio via some beaches and other places. We arrived on the 18th of Jan in the early evening, and basically crossed the road from the bus station in order to check into our hotel. This was mainly for convenience, because the next morning we planned to take the "Scenic" train down to a place on the coast called Ilha do Mel (translation :- Honey Island). We got the tickets for the "Scenic" train and headed into town to check out this urban success story ... read more

Before heading out on the Ina Trail, we spent 3 days relaxing in Cusco and for my part trying to get over a stomach cramping case of travellers diahrea. A quick trip to the doctor, a stool test, and a packet of Ciproxin later we were ready for 4 days of pain on the Inca Trail. Friday 26th we started at 6am, pretty easy for a first day. Saturday involved going almost straight up a 1200m mountain then 700m back down. Luckily it was all over by lunch time and most of us slept for the rest of the day. Sunday was more up and down, 16km in the end, but we finished up camping in a somewhat civilised area, complete with cold beer, hot coffee and flushing toilets!!! Monday was the last day, a 4am ... read more
