After spending months in the smog and dirt of South American cities we needed a break! There was no better place to do this than ilha do mel (honey island), a tiny desert island not far from Curitiba in the South of Brasil. To get to our desert island retreat and relax all we needed to do was spend 10 hours on a bus, 3 hours on a train (after waiting for the station to open for 2 hours!), 2 hours on a bus then 2 and a half hours on a little fishing boat ( after waiting 3 hours for it!), then a half hour walk through a forest to our hostel!!! It was worth it htough and the island was about as close to a deserted island paradise as you can get anywhere. ... read more

So I haven't written since arriving here in Curitiba. My stay has been much more academically oriented than all previous stops on this trip, partially because two of my three finals were yesterday and today and I have a business plan due next week in Sao Paulo. Regardless, I've seen some of Curitiba and have enjoyed what I've seen. I started out my week with a trip on the tourist bus line, a special route created to take travellers past all of the landmarks and tourist spots in the city, parks, opera halls, gardens, museums etc. You can get on and off of the train five times without paying an additional fee. I visited the Oscar Niemeyer Museum, also known as the "Eye Museum" and spent a couple of hours looking at Brazilian modern art and ... read more

If you cant be in Germany for the world cup, the second best place to be is brazil. This nation is futbol obsessed. everywhere you look, every store, in windows, on the streets, they are displaying their national colors- green, yellow and blue. everyone is selling brazil appearal. It is so much fun. Every night on the news, its just hours of repeats of games or analysis or highlights. these people eat, sleep and breath futbol. so woke up sunday and got ready to go to a bbq/ party for the game. we had probably at least 10 different types of meat, salad and leftover desserts from the wedding. Game time, the streets are empty. all the shops and businesses are closed. everyone is watching the game and decked from head to toe in brazil colors. ... read more

After this past weekend, now I realize why Brazillian coffee is so strong. So I arrived friday afternoon, only to be greeted at the airport with signs and a fanbase. After catching up with friends, we had a mellow friday night and went to a mexican bar. According to the locals, it's "the best" mexican food in town, but well, being from san diego, it tasted nothing like mexican food. saturday was spent getting ready for aline's wedding. ( i still cant believe that bryan and aline are married). One of the best thing about brazil is that the services are so cheap. to get a mani, pedi, and waxed, it cost 25reals... about $14US. The wedding was so pretty and fun. It was a mix of a brazillian/american wedding. It started at 7pm, with the ... read more

There isn't so much to say about Curitiba so much as there is to see. I know this: Curitiba, which was named for its copious pine trees that have since been replaced by buildings, is a paragon of urban planning excellence and is globally considered so. I adore the architecture here. Also, we spent a lot of time not doing anything, what with Eden's fever and shitting her brains out. But thanks to Aureo, his extraordinarily generous family, and the Couch Surfing Project that brought us all together, we hadn't to worry about beds or toilets. (Also, thanks to the miracle of antibiotics and Eden's ingesting of them, we'll both be in peak physical condition for Iguazu Falls on Monday. That's right, there's no reason the both of us shouldn't be perfectly healthy on Monday, for ... read more

Well after my departure from Rio de Jenairo (for the last time I figure, but for some reason I doubt that) I had to decide where to go. Ry, Jord and Gav were heading to Sao Paulo (cringe) and then onto the waterfalls. Since I had already visited them, I decided to head west and hopefully see a little bit of Uruguay before meeting up in Buenos Aires. I figured it would be an easy task moving from major cities (Rio de Jenairo and Montevideo) but buses that go that distance are very infrequent (several thousand kms), especially now that Carnivale is long since passed. I would have had to wait in Rio for several days which I really did not want to do. I broke out my guidebook and started picking towns to the west ... read more

We arrived at Curitiba at 6.45 am after a comfortable journey on the Leito. We had a coffee/tea in the bus station cafe to re-energise ourselves then headed off to the train station to get the tourist train to Paranagua. The journey was advertised as a scenic, romantic journey through the mountainous atlantic rainforest of the South-East of Brazil. What they don´t advertise is the fact that it only runs once a day at a time when civilised people are re-energising themselves over coffee/tea in the bus station. Nor do they advertise that the train is only a tourist train on weekends so is not the luxurious air-conditioned train either, nor does it run all the way to Parangua, it now only went to the stop before, Morretes. Flexible as we are we decided the best ... read more

From Parati we took a bus to Sao Paulo and then from there another bus to Curitiba. In total we spent 12 hours traveling. We arrived at our hotel late on Thursday nigt and crashed. Curitiba is a city made up of decendants of Polish, German and Italian immigrants. It is also one of the best run cities in Brazil with health, transportation and education systems that are some of the best in the country. The center of the city is totally pedestrianized so it was a good place to wander for a couple of hours. We then visited the botanical gardens, the Oscar Niemeyer museum (brazilian architect) and saw a bunch of parks. Curitiba is a city full of parks and lots of culture so it was really nice to walk around and soak it ... read more
