In the morning we woke up early so that we could catch the dawn cog train up to Morretes. Having arrived at the main station we booked tickets with Serra Verde Express for the 8.15am train (R$53). This was for the 1st class service which included a guide (in Portuguese) and a snack on-board. We also book at ticket for the bus back (as the next train back doesn't leave until 4pm). This is on the Viacao Graciosa and costs R$12.38. The train leaves and starts to wind it's way through the outskirts of the town past some very unimpressive slums. Time is passed though by listening to Faye's attempts to get her card unblocked - "No, I'm on a train in Brazil". Soon we are up in the mountains and passing over viaducts and huge ... read more

Given that it was already dark when we arrived we grabbed a cab and checked into our hotel, the Estacao Palace. Next we head into town to find a bite to eat. As the books suggest Curitiba is a modern town and the roads are neat without having much interest at this time. We are fast finding out that restaurants open and close quickly so even recommendations from recent guides sometime no longer exist and this being the case we took a risk on the Arrumadinho Cafe Bar where we were served massive burgers and salads, wine and beer for a very reasonable price. Another good find.... read more

Curitiba is about six hours west from Sao Paulo and is described as an Eco City. We decided to come here for three nights as a pit stop before heading to the Iguazu Falls, mainly so we could rest and do some washing. The hostel we stayed in was lovely. It was an Eco Hostel, not quite sure what constitutes an Eco Hostel here, it did have recycling bins but that seemed to be about the extent of it ´Eco ness´. It had large grounds and the rooms were in little wooden outbuildings like chalets. It was a bit out of town which made it difficult for us to do much in the evenings, this at least this saved us money and we spent the evenings playing pool and watching TV which was actually quite nice ... read more

Day 228 - Monday 5 May I arrived in Curitiba about 7.30 in the morning and headed straight for the train staion next door. The planet says theres an unforgetable train ride from here through the mountains towards the coast. Russ who did it a few days ago says its ok. I was all set to buy my ticket when I had a change of heart. I've already seen similar scenery on my trip so far and will no doubt see more as I head further north. I decided to put it off until tomorrow. So instead of the train ride I decided to find some accommodation for the night and then explore the town. I'd only been gone 10 mins from the bus station when I got a feeling its just like any other small ... read more

What a place. I boarded the bus in Rio de Janeiro at about 7:15pm for an 11 hour bus trip to Curitiba, the capital of the Brazilian state of Paraná. And damn, was it good. The two seats that I enjoyed reclined to just above horizontal, with footrests and calf rests and blankets to keep you warm and snug. I knew that I had had a bloody fantastic sleep when I woke up and felt the dried saliva on my cheek. We arrived in Curitiba at about 9am, the roads wet from some overnight rain. I got talking to an English couple that were on my bus, and got a few accomodation ideas off them - since the Lonely Planet had figured to omit all hostel options from its budget guide. They had a different guide, ... read more

Our trip back to Londrina started with a flight from Santiago Airport. After a check in that was like being in the auditions for Takeshi's Castle, we borded and arrived in Sao Paulo ready to catch a bus at 10.45pm to Londrina. After another nightmare trip, including thin seats and NO sleep we arrived at 6am to be met by Carla and Aline. After a well earned sleep we awoke to a full house. After introductions to aunt's, uncles, cousins, grandparents and anyone else that appeared, we had a bbq and waited for the new year to come. Once this had passed and we had watched the many fireworks in the city we headed out to a club. Despite not singing Auld Lang Syne we were in good spirits and the night out was very enjoyable. ... read more

Having arrived at the Falls quite early, we didn´t really need to stay overnight in Foz do Iguacu, and instead got a night bus to Curitiba, 9 hours away. Curitiba is one of Brazil´s model cities, regarded worldwide as an exemplar of urban planning, and a very desirable place to live. There´s not much for the traveller, however, and the reason we came here was actually for the trip *out* of the city - one of Brazil´s last train lines runs from Curitiba through mountains and rainforest to a town called Morretes and eventually to the coast, and it´s supposed to be a stunning journey. You´ll probably note the use of the word "supposed" as unfortunately we didn´t get to experience it! Our guidebook states that trains leave at 8 and 9am, as does the train ... read more

Antonio met us at the station. We didn't know Antonio but through the couch surfing project he had invited us to stay with him. The site has location software that tells people where you last logged in from. When we were at Iguazu Falls the software incorrectly showed us as being in Curitiba and Antonia saw this and invited us to meet him or stay with him. He was a great guy who immediately took us on a little tour of the city, showing us the landmark greenhouse in the Botanical Gardens. His home is a little green house from the 1960s with a big monkey puzzle tree outside located not too far from downtown. He lives there with his parents and five dogs. Immediately we sat down to a big breakfast prepared by his mother ... read more

Since we have been away we have both adopted the idea that whilst we travel through other countrys and invade other people's lives - as long as we are polite, aware and willing to adapt then good luck and good fortune will follow us around - a sort of traveller's karma if you like. This theory may just be a load of hippy nonsense and I may be being a little over reflective as our trip draws to an end but as the rest of this blog goes to show....someone is smiling down on us. We first met Adriana and Betina 9 months earlier on a boat trip in Halong Bay and thanks mainly to this website have stayed in touch ever since. And as every month has passed their original offer of a place to ... read more
