After relaxing in Porto Seguro, we were prepared for city life again, and had heard many many good things about Salvador from lots of people but mainly from Mateus and Claire. Arriving at 6am, after an 11 hour bus ride, we woke up in a big city, with the mission of finding ourselves somewhere to stay. After an hour or so of walking around in the quite shady area of Pelourinho, 2 taxi rides later we found The Nega hostel, which was laid back and hippyish! Pelourinho is the quaint historic centre of Salvador where most tourists visit, and because of that it is full of dodgy characters and street sellers and beggars, some only kids and on crack. There's tourist police supposedly everywhere but that doesn't seem to make you feel at ease here. Our ... read more

New Year Party South America » Brazil » Bahia » Salvador By JonteDecember 31st 2006Jonathan OlssonStill in Salvador, we're invited to a fancy party at an hotel complex. See the pictures! Brought our luggage to the hotel. Enjoyed the dinner, survived this year too! and the huge party after it. Our flight left Salvador sometime during the night, don't remember what time, but we got a taxi from the hotel there, took some work getting a driver to do that drive, that night... I'm getting used to these idiotic flights now. Arrived safely back in São Paulo, spent two more days there and then ... read more

Christmas! South America » Brazil » Bahia » Salvador By JonteDecember 25th 2006Jonathan Olsson We considered back and forth what to do and where to go for christmas, finally we decided. Salvador, Pri's sister had been working at an hotel there and had already decided to go there over christmas to visit friends. We booked tickets for us on the 23'd and flew there on the 24'th! The airports were crowded... Arriving in Salvador was HOT! Damn, and I thought São Paulo was warm... Courtesy of friends, we had an awesome condo with an 8 meter wide panoramic window, just a few feet away from the o... read more

So here we are - and what an amazing place this is... Salvador - it is truely the heart of Brazil. It is everything I intially thought Brazil would be - a party at every corner - a man in every corner with a guitar and food and dancing on every street you can turn into Today we spent the whole day at a percussion class. Moo and I were convinced that he would throw me out as I am totally tone deaf and he spent a couple of hourrs just rectifing my mistakes. Then managed to get free tickets to one of the best brrazillian cultural shows... and looking forward to samba classes tmrw. Everyone who had kept up to date with the blog and left a message - you put a smile on my ... read more

If you were cursing me after the last blog then no doubt you'll be very pleased to know that it seemed to jinx the weather completely and we even had two days of solid rain in Salvador (I can feel the sympathy from here). In fact it seemed almost as if a higher force was deliberately trying to disprove everything I wrote about in the last blog. For a start, there was a film on the bus (although given that it was a romantic comedy about two people with learning difficulties falling in love, it was still rather a radical departure from the usually-preferred South American genre of mindless violence). Then, on arrival, Salvador seemed considerably less edgy than we had been led to believe, mainly due to the zillions of armed police and huge parties ... read more

While I could write a book on Salvador, I think I'll leave this entry short and come back to it later. Sorry to dissapoint, but so much happened here that writing an entry in an internet cafe just doesnt seem to suffice. Anyway... The city of Salvador sits along the eastern coast of Brazil. It is something of a cultural mecca in Brazil, a place where Brazilian expression comes alive in Samba infused dances and Capoierra demonstrations. It has a long history, and the sites and scenery in the city date back to colonial times in some places. Pelhourino, the citiy's historical center, is a UN protected site with some amazing churches and all sorts of cultural activity. Tuesday nights in Pelhourino particularly explode with activity, including an impressive concert by a percussion band called Olodun(Im ... read more

We decided to miss out Itacare as it was just another beach resort and do the long stretch journey straight to Salvador. The bus journey took 10 hours and wasnt that bad APART from the girl with the longest legs sitting in front of us and a screaming new born behind us. We found a hostel in the lonely planet which the taxi man and we subsequently found out was closed. We had a look at some others but we were so disgusted we ran out of there. Then a really nice police man (who was learning Italian in 15mins by book) and a guy called Paulo took charge of us and found as an okay place called Hotel Artemis in a good location. It just so happend that Paulo was the receptionist there. He was ... read more

Salvador first freaked me out but turned out to be fantastic. Once you get used to being the object of the occasional hissing and being accosted by people selling everything under the sun, then its really nice. There is a prominent African influence here which is evident in the features of the people and the handicrafts ie. wood carvings, musical instruments and artwork. The pelourinho (old town), is packed full of historic and cultural buildings and churches. Its also very touristy with loads of souvenir shops, art galleries, cafes and restaurants. There are ladies dressed in traditional bahia costume wanting payment to take a pictures of them. Also pretty cool and the little "coco" vans where the little man sells you a coconut with which you drink through a small hole with a straw. Then you ... read more
