The last few days have been non-stop partying as we joined the people of Salvador in celebrating the biggest party in the world - CARNAVAL! Contrary to popular belief, Salvador (and not Rio de Janeiro) is the place to be for Brazil's carnaval. Rio's carnaval is very much a spectator sport - only tourists and rich Brazilians who can afford the expensive tickets "partake" in the party by watching the 7 samba schools perform their shows, after which 1 is chosen as the winner. Salvador's carnaval, on the other hand, is for everyone. People, young and old, pack a 5km stretch of road near the city centre, partying to the sounds of their favourite performers, who come parading down the street on giant trucks loaded with massive speakers. Depending on your financial situation, there are 3 ... read more

It is our last day in Salvador, and it is a day of errands. I have a to-do list: havaianas, postcards and stamps, airport transfer in Buenos Aires, and acarajé. Leroy has but one mission - to find CDs of the Carnaval songs imprinted on our brains. The prophecy of that lone bootleg CD seller has come true. When we refused to buy his ripped music for R$5 a CD, he yelled “Vai se acabar!” (They’ll run out!) as his fist came down to underscore the point. And now, we are half a day away from leaving empty handed. We figure the mall must have some music stores, and we are willing to pay regular prices for a real CD, one guaranteed to work (Jak’s friends bought some on the beach and they didn’t work once ... read more

Written 02/21/07 10:30am by Meli Relaxing Post-Carnaval Fat Tuesday, the last day of Carnaval. Jak’s crew was going to Bloco Skol d+ that night to see Fatboy Slim. Our crew opted out of it as we knew it would be mostly tourists and not Brazilian music. I’m sure it would have been fun, but we were all bloco-ed out after Coruja. The day was spent mostly just hanging out. Leroy’s stomach was acting up… the product of eating all that random food at Camarote Oceania, plus drinking some beer with Jak’s crew at their afterparty, plus whatever other combination of street food and poor diet could have brought him to this point. Leroy doesn’t drink usually drink beer, and it doesn’t sit well with him. He didn’t eat much all day—just salt and sour imitation Pringles, ... read more

Written 02/21/07 10:15am by Meli, with additions by Lee Getting Ready for Our Last Night It’s Monday and, for our group, we only have one more event - Camarote Oceania. This camarote is nearby, just at the lighthouse, and it’s one that Jak’s group also bought so we know we’ll all be together again. We spend the day doing errands. Delene and I get our abadás altered while Lou and Brandee go on a four hour hunt for an ATM. Leroy also went out looking for an open international ATM for us, but he somehow found it in 20 minutes by going to the Shopping Barra mall nearby. Poor Lou and Brandee. After finally finding money, they head to Jardim Brasil to buy abadás for Camarote Oceania, which they initially thought they’d skip when we first ... read more

After a week seriously battering my liver I was sick as a dog today. Not because of the alcohol consumed but because of the traditional Bahian food I had eaten which was sold by women in traditional dress. As I am somebody who is quite willing to sample the local delicacies I thought nothing of ordering this food that I had seen all week, being so hungry I sank my teeth into it.......I had to run behind a drinks stall and puke it all out. It just smelt of rotten sweaty fish but I should have known as I had already removed the shrimps from the top that still had their shell on, legs and all!!! Tonight was the only night I could not consume a drink and for weeks after I would continue to ... read more

Well we´re right in the middle of Carneval at the moment which is pretty hectic to say the least! We´ve done two of our blocos and 1 Camarote now (see our previous entry for explanations of what that means)! We´ve got just 1 bloco left tomorrow and then Carneval is over. We´re seeing Fatboy Slim, Layo and Bushwacka and DJ Marky tomorrow which should be amazing. Carneval is a bit different to how i expected it but all the rain we´ve been having hasn´t exactly helped that! We did a bloco yesterday afternoon and it just threw it down, but the rain´s so warm here that it doesn´t really matter and we still had fun. We´ve now lost two cameras now though because the cheap skates in this stupid city even stole our disposable camera on ... read more

Written 02/20/07 by Leroy, 02/21/07 by Meli The Party Routes There are three Carnival Circuits: Campo Grande-Praça Castro Alves, also called Avenidas or the “Osmar” route; Barra-Ondina, or “Dodo”; and Pelourinho or “Batatinha.” Avenidas is the original Salvador Carnival circuit—more traditional, more of a cultural orientation, streets lined with stores and apartment buildings on both sides, a more intimate feel to it in terms of partying with the locals. It’s where the blocos are judged and where political big shots sit on the first day of Carnaval, when the mayor hands over the keys to the city to the Carnaval king. Barra was added in the 80s and follows a path along the ocean. There is a tendency for bigger names to play this circuit and it is more popular, though popularity varies year to year. ... read more

All week we saw these women on street corners braiding hair and sewing what looked like a terry towelling turban onto people’s heads. What was going on? What does this have to do with carnaval? The answer is: Sons of Gandhi is the most famous afoxe. The nearly 5,000 member all-male bloco is always a source of great anticipation. Founded in 1949 on the occasion of the City's 400 anniversary and as a way to honour the life work of the great Indian pacifist leader Mahatma Gandhi who'd been assassinated the year before. You'll see members wearing turbans with a blue sapphire distribute beads and other joyful surprises to the delighted audience. Their rhythm is called ijexá and they spray spectators along the parade route with perfume and talcum powder. This day everywhere we walked ... read more
