Drunk, that is. Well, that was last night. I didn´t plan on drinking, and when I first started writing I was sitting down to dinner at a café. I am always inspired at the end of the day to jot down my thoughts and last night was no exception. So as a wrote on various paper napkins (I never seem to have my actual journal on me when I want it) I had a caiprinha (Brazil´s national drink). But at this café they made them with different fruits, not just with lime, and these new drinks I discovered were INCREDIBLE!!! Oh, and they made them in pint glasses, instead of the usual rocks glass. Anyway, here is what I wrote last night, on little napkins, unedited. Enjoy! Hello everyone, Salvador is a city in the northeastish coast of Brazil. Im writing this blog about five days after i was in Salvador so I cant remember everything but i will give it a whirl. We left Olinda and got a bus from Recife to Salvador, we got an overnight bus as the trip was a short 11 hours (good bus aswell had padded leg rests and a pillow and blanket, i dont know if i have already said but the busses in brazil are frezzing and after the huge bus journey to Fortaleza from Rio in just a tshirt, shorts and flip flops i appericiate a blanket). We already had a hostel in mind from the lonely planet, it was in the old city (has a name but i have forgotten it). The guide ... read more

Meet Beruška , the latest addition to our little team. After scouring the classifieds, the internet, and finally the streets of Salvador, for a Toyota Land Cruiser, we became convinced that these cars just don't exist in Salvador and prepared to move on to the next city, by bus. Just then, guess who shows up - none other than the beautiful Beruška herself, and parked in the parking-lot of our apartment nogal. What followed next was a series of skillful negotiations (with Danilo, Nanda's brother doing most of the talking obviously), a check-up at the local Toyota mechanic followed by many, many hours watching and learning as they opened our baby up, kitted her out, and, it has to be said, discovered some unexpected issues, which went some way in terms of countering the discount we ... read more

Florianopolis Fully relaxed and recharged from our time in Iguazu, the much anticipated foray into Brazil was underway. Andy & I had met a young Australian couple Trent and Tegan, with whom we caught an early morning taxi and crossed the border into the adjacent brazillian province of Paraná. From Foz do Iguazu (the Brazilian town near Iguazu Falls) we jumped on a bus headed for Florianopolis, the beach-island resort capital city of Santa Catarina, to the south of Paraná. Andy, who had been to Florianpolis (or 'floppy-ya-knob-at-this' as he liked to call it) was really keen to get there and assured us that we'd be enjoying some fantastic beach relaxation as soon as we got there. True to his word, Florianopolis had some fantastic beaches. We managed to organise an apartment in Ingleses Beach (thanks ... read more

One thing is certain after my trip to Salvador: Brazilians know how to throw a party. We were fortunate enough to arrive to this port in the middle of Carnival, which according to the Guinness Book of World Records, is the largest celebration in the world. It certainly seemed like it, since I’ve never seen so many people crowded in the streets in my life. The festivities began early in the afternoon and lasted right up until Tuesday, which is known in the states as Mardi Gras. The parades include blocos, which are huge decorated flat bed trucks that blast music and have people pay to march around with them all night in a color uniforms. Everyone goes all out with the costumes, no matter what age or gender, and for one week the toil ... read more

We arrived in Salvador after a great day and nights traveling fiasco, including 4 hours at Ouro Preto bus station, because we had forgotten the time zone had changed. We then decided to take the bus from Belo Horizonte to the airport by which time it was evening. The reason being to avoid a 24 hour bus ride. So we ended up with flights that took from 10pm until 5am and cost twice as much. Salvador at 7am was very different from the scenic Ouro Preto we had left behind. Basically this place was a bit scary so we legged it because Elmo didn't want his hair braided and Abbey didn't want any wooden beads. However we stayed one night at The Paris Hotel, and the less said about this the better!!!! ... read more

After the madness of Rio we are now in Salvador, 2 hours North by plane. We arrived late at night and there was no accommodation to be had due to the carnival hangover, so we got a hotel by the airport for the night. The morning brought our first taste of tropical rain, and a short taxi ride to the centre reveled a little colonial treasure of brightly colored buildings and cobblestone roads filled with paintings, local crafts, cafes, bars, and loads of tourists!! Pelorinho is the 400 year old historical city centre with a major African influence, which means music and dancing in the streets at every opportunity - hooray!! We have been here for 4 days and have meet a couple from Birmingham (Nick & Jo) who are on a similar trip and have ... read more

It seems that I've been trying to write this blog for ever, I did get quite far previously but the computer I was using crashed before I could save it. I should have realised that a pc, so old it was running windows millennium edition was likely to be unstable. Probably the first thing to say is my Rough Guide was right: a downpour can happen in Salvador at any time. There seems to be two types of weather here: hot and sunny or warm but really wet. It hasn't been too bad, most of the days have been dry most of the time. Today is the first day where its been wet virtually all day. So what have I been doing for the last week, the short answer is partying. Ok, I didn't party as ... read more

The Rest of Rio: we spent the final days in rio going up the green, cartoon-like hills that the city was built around. really i think it is one of the prettiest cities i´ve ever seen, because of these steep tropical hills that pop up in the middle of the urban landscape, and out into the bay too. you might have heard of sugar loaf mountian, and the statue of the christ that overlooks the city. but at the same time, the christ has his back to a large part of the city, which clearly explains why there is a little war being fought every day on the streets there. in conclusion, rio is great but you have to be a bit careful.
