Salvador is the capital of Bahia State and it was once the capital of Brazil. Salvador is a typical brazilian city with lots of african and indigenous influence. It was fantastic to be in such a place. Despite being a crowded city with more than 3.5 million people, its beaches are still clean and beautiful. It has more than 50km of beach. We visited the historic center and surroundings. Pelourinho, Mercado Modelo, Elevador Lacerda, Farol da Barra, many churches and the fantastic "Convento do Carmo" that it is now a 5 star hotel in the center of Pelourinho. We stayed in 2 different hotels. Bahiamar and Catussaba. I loved the people from there. They are very friendly and the violence still under control. ... read more

The previous blog found us in Asuncion; we are now enjoying our last days of freedom in Paraty on the Brazilian coast, roughly halfway between Sao Paulo and Rio. A lovely spot, and a nice place to be ending our 6-month sojourn in South America. After leaving Paraguay we headed east back into Brazil and took a train through mountainous jungle scenery to the coastal town of Paranagua, and from there a boat to the Isla do Mel. This is yer actual island paradise: no roads, no cars, only mangrove and forest, sandy paths and deserted beaches. You may be wondering how come there ain´t no luvverly pictures of these tropical beauty spots. The reason: we got robbed again, and this time the camera disappeared. As a final treat, we had decided to visit Salvador, a ... read more

Ive still attached a few more photos of our time in Itapirica and Sacatar that are pretty nice... taken on the morning of departure (Owen's birthday) and of the celebrations the night before. Now in Salvador.... Salvador is divided into a lower city and an upper city.. both connected by a massive elevator (which was in a photo in a previous blog) and several cable carts along the cliff face out of the central zone. right next to where we stayed we had a brand new cable car to test out which is VERY handy!.. and saves the legs from walking down (and especially back up again!) the 100m or so drop (with a great unsuspecting bar with a decking having perfect views for sunset!). The lower city has been advised in all guide books to ... read more

English Trancoso There are places where, once you set your foot on, you feel like somebody has cast a spell on you. It has happened to us in Trancoso. It might have been the contrast with the hectic Rio, it might be due to the particular moment and the particular way we were feeling while we were there, it might be that if we come back we will not feel the same magic, but, somehow, in that place everything looked perfect. Far away from the civilization, back to the time where the rithm in the human lives was given by the light of the sun... it is incredible to think that only 18 hours by bus, a small boat ride and another hour by bus were enough to reach Trancoso from Rio. Usually paradise is said ... read more

Salvador and All That Jazz Ok peeps. It is that time again. I have finally sort of managed to catch up on my blogging. So after the 11 hour bus ride which was not that bad actually, we finally got to Salvador. Was not sure where exactly to stay. There are two main districts for accomodation. Pelorinho and Barra. I stayed in the historical center which is basically Pelorinho. My first impression of Salvador is that it is really laid back and people sure love to dance. The first night we got there the local school was playing in the streets advertising their music which was percussion. The beat is really catchy and next thing you know there are dozens of people following the band around the streets and dancing behind them. It was quite fun. ... read more

We are now very close to Salvador, staying on an Island Ilha de Itaparica at a place called Sacatar in a town called Itaparica. To get here from the airport after our 2 hour flight we got on a bus and stayed on there for a VERY scenic trip into Salvador which took at least an hour and a half, went down a VERY cool elevator (Elevador Lacerda) that has at least a 100m drop that leads onto the point where we caught a wooden boat for about 45 mins across the waters to the Island.. from there we jumped into a combi van (the local budget taxi service) to the town of Itaparica which again was at least another hour before arriving at our final destination. We were met by Mitch and Taylor who are ... read more

Sorry for the last story being cut short, as you know someone stole my imodium so that was working against me that morning. I have also had an internet gremlin following me around. Last night half way through this very story the poewr died and all was lost. I am moviing south through Brasil so things are getting better an da bit more modern. I will start with the jungle journey. It was definately a trip to do, very much a character builder. I left from Iquitos Peru by boat to Leiticia Columbia. the boat was so packed with people you could not even get out of your hammock at night and they served the food right to you in your hamock. I met a Swiss couple on board and they convinced me to join them ... read more
