OH YES, I said Carnaval!! So just when I am about to freak out because I thought we were going to miss our flight out of Sao Paulo to Salvador, we catch the shuttle just in time. We had to go to the other airport which is like an hour out of Sao Paulo bus terminal. We were flying with Azul airlines (they were the cheapest) and something was about to happen which has never happened to me before. We got a chance to fly for FREEEEE because they thought/assumed that we have already paid. Conscience really sucks though. It got the better of us...and we ended up paying for it anyway. The reasoning behing that was that the "Cock of Karma" was going to get us at some point if we don't. And we all ... read more

So I arrived in Salvador at almost midnight and grabbed a taxi to meet my new friend Gustavo, a Chilean friend of Cleanto. Gustavo is doing his masters in environmental engineering in Salvador, but coincidentally its actually in toxicology (though not officially), so we had a lot to talk about. He was really pleasantly surprised when I told him I had a doctorate in toxicology and was totally willing to help him with his project. Gustavo was incredibly warm, friendly, and generous, offering me food and letting me stay at his beautiful downtown flat, right near everything including the main beach, Barra beach. He was renting the flat with three Spanish girls (from spain), two of which were on holiday and the other Christina, which was a doll. The next day Christina and I spent the ... read more

Sunburn and backpacks don´t go well together. So it was with a grimace that I pulled on the backpack on Friday afternoon. Our bus wasn't until 7pm on Friday so we requested a later checkout time from the Pousada and spent our last day appreciating the delights of Arraial d'Ajuda. We bought shoes for Sinéad, treated ourselves to a nice fresh fish lunch and then got a final dip in the sea in before running the bus, ferry, bus gauntlet to arrive sweaty and extremely early to the general bus station. The night bus went better than the previous one. The bus was showing 'War of the Worlds' in Portuguese, so we watched that to hone our language skills. Then, to our delight, they showed the rest of the bonus stuff on the DVD - and it was ... read more

The choice was between another 20+ hour journey on a coach for £50 or a 2 hour flight for £50. Needless to say the decision was already made for me. I am writing this update, sat in a hammock in Guyana whilst the heavens have just opened. This is winter in Guyana, but the temp this morn at 7am were 28 degrees and now whilst it is raining the temp has only dropped 2 degrees or so. Arriving in Salvador early evening seemed a good time to arrive. After I collected my rucksack, I was faced with the decision whether to get a taxi to my hostel which was set at 45 BRL or get the bus to the centre of Salvador for 4 BRL. After walking around aimlessly for about 10 mins, and checking my ... read more

After another overnight bus, we arrived in Salvador de Bahia famous for preserving traditional Bahian culture, samba music, the martial/dance art of capoeira, Rastafarian religion and for the worlds biggest party known as Carnival!! We arrived early around 6am then took a cab to Hotel Estrela in Pelourinho, the historic district of town. Pelourinho means whipping post in Portuguese and the location was a major slave auction port outlawed in 1835. When we arrived we were greeted by an incredibly nice receptionist who had been working at the Hotel for over 14yrs and learned English by watching movies!! Due to the dreary rain I took a 3-4hr nap and John drew a beautiful church dome (Igereja da Misenicordia) that was just outside our bedroom window. The view from our hotel was incredible. From the terrace we ... read more

After Carnaval, I got a cheap last minute flight to Salvador de Bahia, the oldest city in the New World (Rio airport is fairly swish by the way). We stayed in Pelourino which is the historic area of the city, in a cool hostel where we would spend most our time. The drinking game circle of death was a big hit here and we got pissed on daquari fruit drinks playing this most nights. We usually conspired to get one of the new players sick each night, but it was good craic. Carnaval was fissiling out when I arrived. I met Aussie Adam, Saffa Charl, Dub Simon and some others here. One of the first nights here I was kissing an American girl who was real ugly and awkard. We had some trouble in the street ... read more

We arrived in Salvador safely, after nearly missing our connecting flight in Miami, but luckily the Captain was at the gate waiting for us. When we arrived in Salvador we met a Norweigan guy named Halvor, who we shared a cab with to our hostel, luckily he was staying in Pelourinho just as we were. He proved to be not only a great drinking companion but also he was very well travelled and taught us alot about other regions in South America, also he spoke some Spanish so that helped a bit. The first thing we did on our arrival to Pelourinho was to buy our "Abadas", which are tshirt that are your tickets to take part in the Carnaval itself, attending one of the "Blocos" (big trucks with bands playing on top moving at 2km/hr). ... read more

Tim Version: * Carnaval - everything it is cranked up to be! Mad parties all the time, dancing everywhere, huge Blockos, music all the time, muggings and pickpocketing everywhere, and a beer vendor never more than 10 metres from you. * I think I killed my liver... * Ventured to the local Salvador beaches, including an island beach. The sleepless party like f´ing crazy version: Hard to know where to start for this entry.. OK, maybe the hostel, Nega Maluca, wicked hostel =) Very comfoortable, good owner, good workers, good crowd. I got a dorm bed in a dark quiet corner perfect for sleeping during the day. We also had a bar inside, perfect for starting things before hitting the streets. Salvador itself is a decaying city, both beautiful and sad, riding along the seafront and ... read more
